So, I just pwned this sudoku puzzle in the local paper. Some guy (an engineer, I hear) was all, "ZOMG IMMA WORK ON THIS 1337 HOURS++++" and challenged his friend (my school librarian) to find someone who could match his feat. "DUURR YEAHH, I'M SUUUURE YOU'LL FIND SOMEONE" he apparently said.

PWN3d.

Just thought you'd like to know. ^__^

What gave it away, the 1337, the lack of humour or the stench of virginity...?

I'd say the l337...though the other factors may be compelling, nothing gives a way a geek like "ZOMG" or "l337".

No geek would use "1337:, except when mocking those who use it seriously. This guy would fall under the heading of "nerd".

what the hell does this mean? I seriously don't know.

They're like crosswords and can probably be found in your paper. I think they became popular through the NY Times a few years back. You have a 9x9 box, which is divided into 9 3x3 boxes (as shown on the site). Your goal is to arrange all the digits so that each digit appears once in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Sudoku is the best thing since sliced bread. I love it. No, I'm not a nerd. I find it relaxing or something. Don't really know, but it's fun when theres nothing else to do.

Your powers of perception astound me. I think I clarified.

Yeah, I find it beats homework immensely.

Which brings up an interesting question. On NS what's the difference between nerds and geeks?

Geeks know something about what they're fans of. Nerds are just fans of it.

Geeks are allegedly nerds with social skills. I am neither, I am more goth than anything else.

Zoogie People, your powers of perception dumbfound me on the other hand. You merely stated what Sudoku is. You made no attempt at clarifying the content of your post.

On the internet, geeks are easily distinguishable from nerds. If they aren't Internet-savvy, they aren't a geek.

I always thought nerds were individuals heavily into sciences and maths, without much intellectual capacity, even if possessing a high intelligence.

I'm sorry. I completed a sudoku puzzle, which admittedly is a feat of no particular importance, but there are plenty of threads in which to discuss politics and philosophy in NS General. I was challenged, met the challenge, was happy (you know the feeling when you tackle a difficult problem and come up with an answer?), and thought I might pop over to NS and start a sudoku thread. There's sure to be more sudoku fans around here.

It appears that marijuana was involved here.

No. Sorry to disappoint you.

I see no discussion regarding philosophy or politics taking place.

Europa: shall I direct you to the thread entitled Philosophy other than Marxism and Nietzschiism(?) (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=456465) I beg to differ. There are always plenty of threads to bicker over political preference on NS General.

Sudoku always struck me as pretty simple. From looking at them I can basically visualise everything pretty fast and just correct mistakes in the aftermath. I mean there are only so many possibilities.:p

The Zoogie People

Yurka: I thought so too, but they vary by difficulty. I tried one labeled Fiendish. Yeah, it wasn't pretty.

Europa: Apologies for any confusion. I meant there is plenty of room for political discussion in NS General, which is often overflowing with it. Hence, there are also many threads in NS General made to not discuss politics. Clearly sudoku is not related to the socioeconomic status of the world. Are we clear?

Refer me to any statements I made of such a nature within this thread.
The Zoogie People
29-11-2005, 05:29
I was not suggesting that you made statements of such nature. I am suggesting that this be a thread to discuss sudoku, which would be a break from discussing the Canadian parliament or the Iraq war. It's almost cliche on NS to make "Let's not discuss politics - let's discuss, um...[random obj here]" threads, but there you go. I'm definitely not the first one to have made a thread like this. Is that clear?
Europa Maxima

You needn't take such an offensive tone with me. Your original post lacked clarity. How can you expect people to reply to the thread if they know not what you wish to state?

Apologies if you regarded my tone as offensive. It was more exasperated than anything. I thought it was clear that the topic was sudoku, or at least it would be clear to those familiar with sudoku, which was my intended auidence anyways.

No offence was taken, merely your tone appeared to be rather defensive. In any case, I will leave you be now :)
