Why I pay ridiculous amounts for Spanish resources.

Canada is a bilingual country, and really, so is the US, though unofficially. You can pretty much get anything here, be it books, music, DVDs and so on in English and in French, and in the US, it's English and Spanish. But here I am, on the French side of the border, desperately wanting Spanish resources!

DVDs you'd think would be simple enough...they usually come with various language tracks. But while you are almost always guaranteed a French language track, Spanish is hard to come by. Some do, and some don't. I've found you sometimes need to wait a couple months after a DVD is released before they start stocking DVDs with Spanish tracks as well as French.

But it's other things that are harder to come by. Books for example, in Spanish. I have had to order children's books from Miami, because I haven't found a bookstore yet in Canada that will order me Spanish books....or they have three to choose from...that sort of thing. It gets expensive...I'm paying in US dollars, plus shipping. Yuck!

And then there is the newest thing...I'm planning on buying those leapfrog leappads for my daughters, and I want some Spanish books. French, oh French I can get no problem! But the Spanish ones are 'unavailable' in Canada! RARRRRR! WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL! WE ARE AN INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY!

They should be ready to order books and resources in French, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Mandarin....whatever! Cripes! It's not like there isn't a demand for these things...people have to get relatives to ship stuff over all the time. Illegally I might add, because you're really supposed to pay duty on that stuff. THE RESOURCES ARE OUT THERE...why not make them available? I don't get it! Even if I had to pay a higher price because they had to ship it in from another country...I'd do it, rather than hunting around US sites, trying to find one that'll ship to Canada:(

Yes. Only the US sites have Spanish resources, and often won't ship to Canada...instead, directing me to order from the Canadian site that only stocks French language resources. It's really frustrating...I know the stuff is out there, but they won't send it to me:(. The last time I ordered Spanish books from the US, I ended up spending almost $70 for 5 children's books. And I had to call the company directly, and ask them to make a special arrangement to ship to Canada, because they normally wouldn't have.

I live not too far away from the first one, and I ofyen buy kids books in spanish for my daughters, so when I read your post, I just googled the name of the bookstore and followed links until I came to the longer list.

Glad it helped.

Very much so...it's a pain having to ship stuff from anywhere...but a hell of a lot easier getting it within Canada than from without.

I was going to buy a set of books from Chile once...Papelucho...and the shipping alone cost more than the books themselves!

Thanks!!

In Herndon, Va, I live near several Hispanic grocery stores (both extremely large). There are also stores that sell DVDs, books, clothing, cultural items, etc.

Locals call it Little El Salvador.

try spanish sites they might help. Just go to google.es and type it in in spanish. outside of that can't be much help.

P.S. I live in spain so i don't tend to have the problem:)

Oh, I have done that...but again, serious money to get stuff shipped. Even to just order those leappad books in Spanish...the stores won't do it! I have to make 'special arrangements' with the stores in the US, and often they won't do it either.

Like I said...the resources are out there, in almost any language you could think of...it'd be nice if it were more easily available. We have so many cultures in Canada, and many people want their kids to be bilingual in English, and their parent's mother tongue. It'd be a lot easier if we didn't have to search so hard for this stuff, or rely on people overseas to send us things.

It seems that people in Quebec looking for some English resources may have some of the same problems as I...I was browsing Toys R Us, and found this disclaimer:

"Certain products we carry are not permitted for sale to addresses in the Province of Québec under the following terms of The Charter of the French Language, "Toys or games, except those referred to in section 52.1, which require the use of a non-French vocabulary for their operation are prohibited on the Québec market, unless a French version of the toy or game is available on the Québec market on no less favourable terms".

A lot of the books and toys I'm seeing are not allowed to be shipped to Quebec. What a crock of shit!

I feel your pain. I want to order some CDs from Mexico, but the shipping makes them much more expensive, and here they don't have any good Mexican music. It's all Thalia, Luis Miguel, and crap like that. Sure, they had the Molotov one at HMV, but very very expensive.

I've been phoning Canadian stores, and none of them will order in Spanish leappad books (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000649DH/qid=1133199411/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/103-9199362-3909431?v=glance&s=imaginarium) for me, and the stores in the US won't ship them here. It's a friggin' conspiracy to make French supreme as the second language in Canada, I swear! This is VERY frustrating!

I saw that www.sears.com.mx has them, but it says nothing about international orders. Doesn't hurt to send them an email, though.

They won't ship to Canada, nor will the US Sears/WalMart/ToysRUs/Amazon etc.

No one can really give me a reason why...I've talked to the regional managers for all these stores in Canada, as well as their head offices, and can't get a straight answer. I'm beginning to suspect that no one has the distribution rights in Canada.

All I want are these few (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/102-0778697-1408949?url=index%3Dblended&field-keywords=spanish+leappad) piddly books!

I wonder...if someone were to order them and have them sent as a "gift" to you with something like Amazon, would that work? Becuase I would be willing to do that if it would
