The year isn't over yet, but I'm going to throw together my own personal "Best of 2005" list. First, lets here what everyone else thinks were the best of 2005, just in case I missed something.

Present by Van Der Graaf Generator: art rock doesn't get a lot louder or madder as a rule. Great stuff.
The new NIN, Kate Bush, Eliza Carthy and Joy Zipper albums were great as well.

For me, the best album of 2005 is a three way tie:

Garbage: Bleed Like Me
Sentanced: The Funeral Album
Korpiklaani: Voice of Wilderness

They're all strong albums with strong songs. For Garbage its their most intelligent and musically mature album to date. For Sentanced, its the last album the band will ever produce and it has the sound of a band that knows they will never record again. Korpiklaani....well...you just have to hear it to believe it.

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary will go on my list.

The songs "Shine a Light" and "It's a Curse" from that album will make the best song list.

I bought a buttload of music this year, but I don't think any of it dated from this year.

Favourite albums of '05?
One Time For All Time - 65daysofstatic
Hypnotize - System of a Down (way better than Mesmerize)
Takk - Sigur Ros
Cautionary Tales For The Brave - Pure Reason Revolution

I rarely buy new albums, and I think that's all the albums I bought that have come out this year...oh wait, Soulfly's new album as well.
Pure Metal

hmm...

would Death on the Road by Iron Maiden count, being a live album?

Other than that, I'm not sure I've bought any albums from this year. Oh, except Employment by the Kaiser Chiefs. That was good, but I don't know if I would say it was one of the best albums of the year, since I have little to compare it to.

I loved college dropout, so I went out and got this one when I saw that the reviews were excellent, but I was very disappointed. Outside of Golddigger, not a single song was that catchy, and a rap song without a good hook is pointless.

Exactly. Although the Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation album is good. Oh and I bough Ghost Reveries by Opeth; but it's meh.

8. Picaresque - The Decemberists

Yay, the Decemberists! Saw them last week, they were really good. Ah, 10+ glorious minutes of The Mariner's Revenge Song...

Also, the opener was Two Gallants, whom I'd never heard of before, and they rocked. CD is "The Throes". You should check it out (it's from 2004, though...). Of course they're much better live, so basically just go see them. :)

OK Go, Oh No

and

Coheed and Cambria, Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

are the only two albums released in 2005 that I believe I bought this year, but I may be mistaken.

And they are both excellent.

Hypnotize - System of a Down (way better than Mesmerize)
Are you on crack? Mesmerized pwns Hypnotize.

I've heard they're really similar. I've only heard Mesmerise at this point and it was meh... A couple of good songs but I don't get the overwhelming urge to listen to it over and over if ya know what I mean. The self-titled album pwns everything. :D

Edit: Forgotto mention the album I'm listening to right now. :p Rosenrot by good old Rammstein. It grows on you but Mutter is still at the top of the tree. Rosenrot itself is a great song, along with Mann Gegen Mann, Te Quiero Puta and Zerstoren.
Jello Biafra

Hm..let's see. (In no particular order.)

Local H - Live '05
Garbage - Bleed Like Me
Napalm Death - The Code is Red...Long Live the Code
Dark Tranquillity - Character
Sentenced - The Funeral Album
scarling. - So Long, Scarecrow
Jello Biafra and the Melvins - Sieg Howdy!
Candlemass - Candlemass
Mary Timony - Ex Hex
Nirvana - Sliver: the Best of the Box (okay, I don't have this, but I have the box set, so this goes up here.)

I haven't heard the new Jarboe, Cathedral, Earth, Opeth or Obituary, but I strongly suspect that at least the first two would kick a couple off of the list I've made.

The new NIN was good, but disappointing. Their worst since Pretty Hate Machine.

6. Z - My Morning Jacket
7. Get Behind Me Satan - White Stripes
8. Picaresque - The Decemberists
9. Gimme Fiction - Spoon
10. Twin Cinema - New Pornographers

That'd be my list if I were on a continuous morphine drip... :p

Seriously though, that's all they play on local college radio.. I hated it at first, but it's actually listenable in a pinch, and sometimes great.

Hooray for college radio! :)
