I've been slowly building up my collection. I want all of their albums and EPs before they're impossible to find, damn it. :D

And yeah, me neither. A bit before my generation. :p

Awesome band. I don't know that I would agree that they're the very definition of punk, but I can't disagree with that statement, either. Saying "art is just the last three letters of fart", as Gibby Haynes did, is a very punk thing to say.

:D

Of course, the definition of what punk is happens to be a completely subjective thing. But for me, if I were asked by someone what punk is...after showing them a Dead Kennedys record, i'd immediately put on a Butthole Surfers one. They're opposite sides of the same golden coin. :D

I don't mind them, but they're no Moss Icon or Sonic Youth.

I love Sonic Youth, and their early stuff is pretty similar, so I can see why you draw a comparison. But I love SY for different reasons...SY are a far more "serious" band. They both suit a different mood. I've heard Moss Icon, but don't know them well enough to comment. Any suggestions of particular songs I should check out?

I just picked two other 'post-punk' (although both fit into a multitude of other genres as well) bands that I liked, there really wasn't supposed to be a comparison.

Moss Icon tend to be pretty hard to find songs by, I'm finding, but I'd suggest Mirror, Gravity and I'm Back Sleeping or Fucking or Something Else

I've seen them live. Just after the 'Worm' album came out. Brilliant show. They had some VD film from the '50's playing behind them. Huge footage of diseased genitalia while hearing 'Sweatloaf' live is definitely an experience I won't forget in a hurry.

Well, Einstein, the genral population thinks punk is well...shit. There is a large diffrence between the two.

The term "psychobilly" was first used by Wayne Kemp when he penned the Johnny Cash song "One Piece at a Time," a Top 10 hit in 1976, where he makes reference to a "psychobilly Cadillac." It came into use as a genre a few years later, when the Cramps described their music as "psychobilly" and "voodoo rockabilly" on flyers advertising their upcoming shows. Although the Cramps rejected the idea of being a part of the psychobilly scene, they, along with artists such as Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Stray Cats are considered important precursors to psychobilly. Musically speaking, there are also antecedents in the garage rock scene of the 1960s and the pub rock scene of the 1970s.

The very first verifiable psychobilly band is considered to be the Meteors, who formed in south London in 1980. With one member being part of the rockabilly subculture, another being part of the punk subculture, and the last being a horror movie fan, their musical ideas overlapped to begin psychobilly as it exists today. The Meteors also invented the concept of psychobilly being apolitical, by encouraging their shows to be a "politics-free" zone in order to avoid disputes among fans, as was becoming common in the punk rock scene of the time. To this day, almost no psychobilly songs are political.

In 1982, a nightclub called Klubfoot opened in Hammersmith, west London, creating a home for the UK psychobilly scene. The club was eventually demolished and replaced with offices and a bus station. Because the psychobilly scene has never become very popular, psychobilly fans often organize "Psychobilly Weekenders" where many bands are featured on one bill to attract many attendees from all over. The first weekenders were organized in the UK in the mid-80s. In the U.S. they happen with frequency in Texas, New York and California.

Psychobilly eventually spread throughout most of Europe, (particularly Germany, Italy, and Spain), Canada, parts of the United States, and is gradually spreading to Asia, especially Japan. While the psychobilly of the early 1980s (the Meteors, the Sharks, Batmobile) was similar to punk or 1960s garage rock, the psychobilly of the later 1980s and 1990s (the Nekromantix, Demented Are Go, the Klingonz, Mad Sin, Asmodeus, Milwaukee Wildmen) had a different sound closer to metal. The psychobilly of 2000s is closer to the American psychobilly sound (Reverend Horton Heat, The Koffin Kats, Los Gatos Locos, Barnyard Ballers, Tiger Army).

Psychobilly fashion is characterized by a hairstyle called a quiff, which resembles a mohawk or a devilock. Many females like to style their hair in the manner of vintage rockabilly fashions or icons, like Bettie Page. The clothing and hair of the subculture often combines punk fashion, for both females and males, such as dyed or shaved hair, studded and shredded clothing, and leather jackets, with early rockabilly fashion, such as denim workware and animal prints.

When most people think punk they think your basics, Dk, Clash, Black Flag, Germs, ect. But we need to seperate the two.

So, because it's a sub group doesn't mean it's near that group, it just evolved. Like our death metal would be no where with out the progression of many bands steming from old black folk music. And those two are totaly diffrent, Einstein.:headbang:

BHS is an odd group. I tend to group their earlier works in more as metal than actual punk [have you heard "The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey's Grave?!"], but they hold the honorable distinction of going middle of the road and not sucking in the process. They are one of the few bands that managed to switch genres without losing their appeal. I like the edginess of their early work, but "Dracula from Houston" is a great song too.

No; putting limits on what can be called punk, and saying "To be punk, you must sound exactly like this", is the very antithesis of the term. The Butthole Surfers are punk, because they weren't afraid to do their own thing and find their own niche. Good day to you, sir.
