Favorite? Well, that's really hard to say... I don't think I have one single favorite.

I did see a very good one two nights ago on TCM. Captain Blood, it's called. It's definitely one of my all-time favorites.

Action / Drama : For some reason " Troy " comes to mind  [ good phalanx combat, I suppose? ] That scene when achilles jumps and stabs the giant-dude in the neck, takes out his sword, and lands - whilst unrealistic - was kicka--.

Clockwork Orange was brilliant..

That d-mned Hannibal movies are sweet.

The best cheap thrill movie goes to the Ring - the second one sucked beyond belief... [hated it, I suppose would be the general summary</mock> ]

* thinks * well.. this might require a second, much more rested, post..

I found Silence of The Lambs disturbing.
The only thing that disturbed me about Silence of the Lambs was the abrupt realization that it was about 5 days overdue back at Blockbuster. Hannibal Lecter always seemed silly to me, like he was the serial killer who got swirlies from all the other serial killers in High School.

Horror: Stanley Kubrick's The Shining
Drama: The Godfather
Seasonal: A Christmas Story
Purposeful Comedy: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Accidental Comedy: Evil Cat
Blatantly Non-Historical Historical Drama: Gangs of New York

Obviously you haven't seen 'The Myth' yet - Jackies latest movie. That was real shite.

If you think Jackie's good, then you definitely need to get your hands on 'Ong Bak' and 'Tom Yum Goong'. Tony Jaa's action scenes will leave you stunned.

Yay! Two other people who have seen Ong Bak! (We are something like a silent revolution, it seems...)

Regarding the movies I like:

Hero - current 'all-time' best movie... so many levels, such gorgeous imagery, spectacular pallette, evocative soundtrack.

Fight Club - one of the most counter-culture 'mainstream' movies ever made. Sparkling direction (as usual) from David Fincher... more gorgeous pallette work, and another excellent selection of music.

Leon (released in the US as The Professional) - Possibly Jean Reno's greatest screen moment, possibly Luc Besson's greatest screen moment, by FAR Natalie Portman's greatest screen moment. Oh - and an excellent performance by Gary Oldman. The script is exquisite, and the direction unobtrusive yet effective (much like Fincher). What more could you want?

Stigmata - almost something of a remake of Exorcist, in 'feel'. Well acted... (pretty) well scripted, and delightful use of the pallette. (The whole 'silver wash' thing adds a surrealistic, almost supernatural, 'glow).

Labyrinth - a kid's movie with levels. You can watch it a decade after you last saw it, and pull new things out of it. The use of colour is divine, the script is clever, and David Bowie and Jeniffer Connelly have unexpected chemistry. And, ST:TNG's "Dr. Crusher" is the choreographer... :)

Other important movies - The Matrix (another good use of pallette), Dark City (the movie that spawned the Matrix movies, in SO many ways), K-PAX (subtle use of light, and colour), Seven (A great Fincher moment), Solaris (the remake - more gorgeous pallette work, and some fantastic performances... hell, even CLOONEY was good!), The Usual Suspects (Spacey's greatest moment?).

Constantine was good (although fairly painful to see Keanu as Constantine, if you know the original material...), the Lord of the Rings trilogy was very good... and I have a surprising fondness for the ongoing (and ever improving) Harry Potter franchise.

I've spent about half a week of my life in all the combined times I've seen Fight Club. It rules.

The Rage in Placid Lake - Awesome Aussie movie, if anyone else has seen it I'll be amazed.

The Castle- Another good Aussie movie.

Sin City was really good as well, but the comics are, as always, better. Really well done though.

Ong Bak was another good movie. One of the best fight choreography.

A Trip to the Moon - The oldest movie ever. Made in 1902. The backgrounds in that movie make me drool

Really? Cause it was pretty much a pannel-for-shot reproduction, though they did cut the seqeunce with Marv's Mom when he goes home to pick up Gladys. Other than that, it was as true a translation as you could hope for. Not suprising considering Miller's involvement.

So many! My top ten off the top of my head:

1. A Clockwork Orange (brilliant film, but the book was still better)
2. The Crying Game
3. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (again, not as good as the book, but they never are. Great flick, though)
4. Fight Club
5. The Matrix (again, shame about sequels)
6. Monty Python (all three thereof)
7. The Silence of the Lambs (a cliche, I know, but it captivated me at the time. Shame about the sequel, though)
8. Braveheart
9. Naked Gun triology (outdated now, but hilarious at the time)
10. LotR trilogy (fantasy's not really my bag, but the films were brilliantly done)

Barbie in the Nutcraker (LMAO i have no excuse)

I have an excuse... I have a seven year old daughter. :)

But, it was surprisingly good, for what it is... with it's attempt at a classical storyline, and even some 'nutcracker' culture thrown in for good measure. (By which I mean, the references to the Nutcracker ballet).

D'oh! Hard question. I have a bunch of favs, but no real number one.
My favs would be:

Competing for number 1:

-Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (yeah, sequel to a video game, but I'm sucker for game animation, plus it was an awesome movie)
-Equilibrium (that movie was cool as hell, and to think I saw it for the first time last month, can't believe I missed out for so long)

The other favs:

Cross Roads (awesome guitar, just awesome)
Walk The Line
Harold and Kumar Go To Whitecastle
Dude, Where's My Car?
National Lampoon's Van Wilder
Swordfish
Braveheart
Gladiator
Hero
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The Matrix (first, the sequels sucked)
Madagascar (just because of the Leemurs, and the Penguins)

Lots of favorites, depending on my mood.
The Outsiders, Labyrinth, Anne of Green Gables (watched so many times as a child I felt like she was one of my friends), Casablanca, Shawshank Redemption, Fried Green Tomatoes, Diary of Anne Frank, and Gone With the Wind are always near the top of my list.

Today, Office Space and Falling Down are darn high!

I also loved (but hate to admit) Never Been Kissed and Dead Poets Society.
If I only get one...The Outsiders would have to win.

Dogma, All About Eve (Bette Davis is amazing), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (this is pure unadulterated sex), Boyz N' the Hood, Beneath Clouds (this is a fantastic indictment of ingrained racism in Australia; and an examination of Aboriginal identity, its also an ensemble cast with 2 teenage actors), Heathers (Christian Slater embodied my fantasies about what I wanted to do to my grade at school), the Breakfast Club (absolutely timeless movie - everyone can identify with the characters), Pulp Fiction, Serenity (Joss Whedon is a genius).

There are many, many others.

I was trying to think of a new way to crawl up my own ass on one of these threads and I think I have it-my film school favs! Movies that I watched getting my film degree that I really liked-any further up my ass and I'd be throwing this stuff up--

Documentary-Salesman. Down right creepy. Also bares the shame of being one of the sources of the Real World asthetic, but it can't be blamed for what people did with it. Door to door bible salesmen in the late sixties.

Foriegn Cinema(to me, in the US...some of these might be domestic cinema to some of you...don't give me any crap...)
Chunking Express-Whatever, I liked it.
Mad Max- Seriously, we watched it. Really. In a class. Totally got credit for it and everything. C'mon, one class watched Face/Off...Nicholas Cage even came to that class.
The Devil's Playground-I can't put that into one sentence, but I thought it was pretty good.

The Standards--
Citizen Cane, The Bicycle Thief, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Metropolis, The 7th Seal, 8 1/2.

The oddballs-
Can Dialectics Break Bricks? Re-dubbing a kung-fu movie to be a dialog on the asthetics of modern art. Quality.
A Situation-alright, here's a note on dubbing and sub-titles. Look, I understand that there is is some ridiculous mismatch that goes into a dub that makes the translation not workable and sub-titles are more apropriate. I dig that. BUT-this movie is a lllllloooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg paper on the Situationists read over a series of images with no talking head or anything like that, the sub-titles are paragraphs just to keep up. I think we can dub this one and not lose anything. Dammit. Then I can actually watch the fucking movie instead of speed read to keep up.
La Jetee(sp,probably)--inspiration for 12 Monkeys, done in all stills (again with the sub-titles...)

That's all I can do and still sit down...

You DEFINITELY need to hunt down and get your mits on a copy on 'Tom Yum Goong'. It's Tony Jaa's new movie (came out about 4 months ago) and while it doesn't have the humour of 'Ong Bak', it has some of the best kickass fighting scenes you'll ever see.

BTW I bought 'Ong Bak' on cd-wow.com for only 8 pounds - and that included free Worldwide delivery.

Effroyables Jardins

Apocalypse Now! was good, but I preferred the book it was based on, Heart of Darkness (Conrad is a literary genius).

Films I want to see:
A State of Mind
Cross of Iron
That recent film on Christmas day in the trenches of World War 1

Some of my favourites, although these seem to change almost every time I see a new film :)

Dr. Strangelove - Peter Sellers is brilliantl!
2001: A Space Odyssey - Another Kubrick...
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion
Any of the Naked Guns
Dune - Mostly because of the book, the parts written for the film stick out a mile (apart from the opening scene with the Navigator, which was well written).

Equilibrium is an excellent (and sorely under-rated) movie.

It's one of the worst movies that's ever seen a theatrical run.

I got my copy of Ong Bak second-hand... it's an ex-rental copy from my local video store... and had been watched (which is sad...) by only two other people, apart from me (rented four times, two of them me...).

I got it for about $10... so.. about 7 of your Earth pounds?

I've been looking for 'Tom Yum Goong', since I saw it listed on imdb... but I have yet to find it around here anywhere.

Mulholland Drive

Yay! Don't often see Mulholland Drive on these lists...

It's one of those films that you finish watching... then try to work out 'who did it' for an hour.... then spend another hour trying to work out what it was they did.... :)

It's one of the worst movies that's ever seen a theatrical run.

I've seen that response before... I've never understood it.

For me, it was like an update of Farenheit 451, with Christian Bale in Guy Montag's role...

What did you find to particularly dislike so much?

The biggest accusation I usually see levelled against it, it that it has a 'cheap' look... which isn't ALL that surprising, for what is basically an 'indie' movie.

Theatre Of Blood, starring Vincent Price and every British character actor they could get hold of in the early '70s in a rush.
Wonderful film.
