Well i think i just lost all of my bookmarks for Mozilla Firefox.

My computer sometimes crashes when I close my browser window, but only when I'm running Windows media player (version 10.00.00.3646) in the background.

Lucky the fourth thing google turned up for a search of 'nationstates' was this site so im not totally sol. I had about 30 bookmarked sites which i used pretty much daily.

Am I totally screwed or is there some backup file somewhere that contains my bookmarks? Im going to guess that there isnt and this leads to my next question: is there some way to prevent this from happening again in the future?

I know one way to prevent it from happening is to try not to rely on bookmarks. I've had it happen to me where I lost one and had to search the whole web to find that lost site. You could also write the URL's down as a form of backup.

Try going to C drive then "Documents and Settings" then your name and you should find Favorites. Once you find them you can import them into Foxfire. Alternative is to do a search for Favorites to locate them. Good luck.

I make sure to back them up regularily (by exporting).

You can try opening the bookmark manager, sometimes when it looks like it's deleted all of mine I find them using that and they're perfectly safe.

What I do is save all my websites as shortcuts on the desktop. Then I put them all in a folder titled "Links" and make a toolbar for it. Then I have a nice little (actually big) dropdown (actually, it's on the side, so a drop over, I guess) menu for all of them. And it's easy to save to a floppy disk for a backup too!.

Sorry about your bookmarks dude, I feel you pain! :(

Unlucky! I hope that never happens to me. I have 126 bookmarks.
