I believe Britain in fact used to do this to homosexuals. And the one and only Alan Turing was forced to undergo it (I think it was due to the homone treatment he got depressed and commited suicide).

You can't "cure" gay people. There's nothing to cure for one thing and for another, such "treatments" simply don't work, instead they tend to cause emotional trauma or at the very least, repression and denial.

Most of the people who have claimed to switch from gay to straight really go from gay to celibate. There are also a large number of people who go from claiming to be straight to later on realizing that they really are still gay.

There was one case where the founders of a group that claimed to "convert" gay men ran off together.

You do realize that from the article, that may be the most disturbing and demeaning proccess ever. Homesexuality isn't a problem, the problem is the people who try and force a way of life on someone that doesn't want that way. In my view, everything thats wrong with the US right now can be attributed to failure to give people choices, even the Iraq war.

Well, religons are usually homophobic, but that's really the priests/rabi/amans interpertation of the bible, and thus being religous doesn't mean homophobic.

I think homophobic bigots ought to be punished for their crimes and there should be new laws to protect everyone including the gay community. I wholeheartedly support gay marriage and full equal rights.

I know that this does not fall in the precise same category, but I once saw a newscast about the fight this girl who wanted to be a man carried against Iranian authorities. She was backed (backed! not just sympathised with) in this by a cleric, who said that it does not go against the Quran.
There are several tones inside a religion. This is not to say that the "treatment" is anything other than degrading crap.
However, I do not think that a religion becomes "superior" when it has learned to "deal" with this particular issue. In fact, no religion does.
The point of view in any religion is consecrated (in the strict sense), and not just stressed. I am not anti-gay in any way, not even conservative*, but it has to be clear to anyone that relgion, as a view on the world as such, cannot be expected to compromise to the requirements of "the world". I would not take this stance on homosexuality, but religion does because it has to. No unjust or violent measure gets legitimacy from it, and there are still countless views other than "under no circumstances" (such as the Catholic one, about the acting upon homosexual feelings being a sin, and not the feelings themselves: which is to say that religion is an intellectual ally of gay activism on the core matter of people being born, not made, homosexuals).

Incidentally, keep in mind that medieval-to-early 1900s Islam was associated with "homosexual promiscuity" in Western minds. (A condoned behaviour? Perhaps more: Sufism may have homosexual acts as sacraments.)

It strikes me that the main intellectual enemy of homosexuality has not been religion, but rather Social Darwinism (a three-pronged attack, as Victorian hypocrisy, Fascism and Stalinism). In the latter decades, a society that is, just the same, built on the principles of Social Darwinism (and not just Darwinism), has expanded the lasso of acceptance. Gays should not be necessarily advocates of this type of society, since the seeds of discrimination are the very same, the only things changed in this collective condemnation being the targets - in many ways, religion itself.
