TARGET? What the frakkin' hell????

Is this true???? ( Recieved in an email )

"This news kinda sucks. I really enjoyed shopping at Target!!!!!!

"Very interesting!!!!!!

"Wasn't it last Christmas that Target refused to let the Salvation Army ring their bells in front of their stores? Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans Association wrote.

'Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud sponsor of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our spring recognition event.

We received the following reply from the local TARGET management: " Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action groups, gay & lesbian causes, and education."

"So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans in general, do not meet their donation criteria, then something is really wrong at this TARGET store. We were not asking for thousands of dollars, not even hundreds, just a small sponsorship for a memorial remembrance.

"As a follow-up, I E-mailed the TARGET U.S. Corporate Headquarters and their response was the same. That's their national policy.

"Then I looked into the company further. They will not allow the Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their stores. And during the recent Iraq deployment, they would not allow families of employees who were called up for active duty to continue their insurance coverage while they were on military service. Then as I dig further,

"TARGET is a French-owned corporation.

"Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET cannot support American Veterans, then why should my family and I support their stores by spending our hard earned American dollars! And, have their profits sent to France. Without the American Vets, where would France be today? They, most likely would be speaking German and trading in Deutsch Marks"

"Sincerely,
Dick Forrey
Veterans Helping Veterans
Please send this on to everyone you know to let Target know we now know they should truly be a target of boycott!!!!!!"

it's true that they wouldn't let the bell ringers there but that's because they have a strict no solicitation policy.I would bet that mostly all the other stuff on there was complete horseshit.

I have never habitually shopped at target anyway. Thier stores are always cluttered and they never seem to have what I am looking for.

If I recall properly, they helped fund the restoration of the Washington Monument.

Turns out that the guy who wrote that ended up writing a letter of apology.
Interesting indeed.

Dunno if this is real, but a private organisation does have the right to do that, IMO, just as its customers have the right to boycott it.

I'd check out Snopes (or send it to Snopes if it's new) before believing the info in any unsolicited chain email. Emails like this have turned out to be hoaxes, or only half-true, before.

Of course it isn't real. Eutrusca seems to have a problem differentiating chain mail from reality. This is obviously French bashing bullshit.

Even if this story was true (which it isn't, as CSW pointed out), this argument seems rather bizarre. Since when have corporations had a duty to support veterans? (Maybe the government should do it - after all they sent them to war in the first place.)

After reading the said email letter, I would have to say based on common sense its false, then reading up on it from other sources, agreeing once again it being false.

I see it as this, Walmart is noted for its very 'christian' outlook on its products and what charities it helps. Its why you will find a section for christian religious books, but none other and the like. Walmart is also noteworthy to being american run and operated, and even uses the blue color.

Now, Target being 'red' and seen as an oppisite to walmart, is painted up as this horrible organization, that supports very un-christian charites, and even turns away the veterns and is *gasp* french...

yeah, utter horseshit. Just someone wanting to dupe the populace, and see if their chainletter can make it to CNN or not. Same motivation as people that make computer viruses.

besides, if they had such a stance, then there would be protests all the time outside their stores...which there isn't.

$10 says some Wal-Mart goons are trying to make Target look bad to eliminate some competition.

Either that, or some stupid French bashing bullshit. I mean, if poeple talked about Jews (just as an example) the way they talk about French people, they'd get all kinds of shit for it.

"Target is a good name for a French company" what kind of bullshit is that? How about if I said "target is a good name for marines"? You'd flip out.

The French bashing is getting old. This letter is obviously a ploy to rial up conservatives with anti-French anti-gay bullshit. See how they included education in their list of "the most offencive things I can think of for Target to support."

Boycott Target? Fuck that. Boycott Mal-Mart for ACCULLY HURTING PEOPLE, not just not donating to your pet charity. People need to re-evaluate their standards.

Ironically, if you just go to Targets website, there is a link on the front page for the salvation army wish list where you can buy and donate products or you can give a cash donation. Also, a whole 30 seconds of searching on their website reveals that they were owned by the Dayton Corporation, merged with The Hudson Comany to become the Dayton Hudson Corp. , which became the Target Corporation in 2000. Amazing what a whole 2 minutes of research can do.

$10 says some Wal-Mart goons are trying to make Target look bad to eliminate some competition.
The guy that wrote the email didn't get a $100 contribution that he wanted because Target doesn't give cash donations.

From the VFT, via Snopes:

Target has a long-held corporate policy regarding donations. And in all fairness, Target contributes more than $2 million weekly to charitable causes and is one of the corporate sponsors for the 2003 tour of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Fund's "The Wall That Heals." "The Wall That Heals" is a traveling Vietnam Veterans memorial and museum that has a strong educational component for schools and serves to honor all our veterans.

I've heard of certain retailers that don't allow the santas etc to be infront of the stores. Some say it scares away business or some junk like that.

OMG!?!?!?!?!

A FRENCH-owned corporation won't give money to pay for AMERICAN Veterans and their memorial!?! Well, insert generic borderline-racist ahistorical anti-French Comment here!

As a true, red-blooded American, I'm not ever, EVER going to shop at a foreign company unless I'm SURE that they are giving thier money to support American vets who fought in a war that had nothing to do with the nationality owning the company.

And don't get me started on the violation of human rights that is forbidding solicitation outside their stores....

I give this chain-email a resounding
