A little research on colonial independence
I did a little research and discovered six countries have undertook a rush period (at least five colonies independant in a relatively small period - Portugal are smallest at five and the UK almost hit fifty - I haven't fully counted the rest)
RUSH YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE:
Spain - 1810-25
Russia - 1917-18
United Kingdom - 1947-84
France - 1953-60
Portugal - 1973-75
Soviet Union & Yugoslavia - 1990-91
Just thought I'd post it here
In the case of the UK it's because the Second World War effectively bankrupted the empire. In France public opinion finally swang away from imperialism.

It would appear that in the case of France, the events may have been linked to the formation of the French Fifth Republic in 1958 - anyoine know about this? And I have to say that our release of the empire was helped by the fact that the British economy was in a state of turmoil until the mid-80s or later (WWII, trade unions, etc.)

The Algerians wanted independence, but there were a large number of people of French descent living there and they influenced the French government to not support independence. Charles de Gaulle used the argument to strengthen his position.
