Hm, Black Friday. A great American tradition. I got a 80 GB Deskstar HD for FREE from Fry's, a 300 GB Seagate for $69 also from Fry's, A Rival Crock Pot for $6.99, Civilization 4 for $30, and Metal Gear Solid 3 for $10 from EB Games.

Suffice it to say, the crowds were terrible (even at 7:00 A.M.) and I was nearly trampled by a frothing mob trying to get my hard drives.

What on earth is "black Friday"?

The day after Thanksgiving; it's the biggest shopping day of the year in the US with almost all stores offering discounts.

It's called Black Friday because that is the day that most retail stores went from red ink to black (meaning they're now profitable for the year). back when the idea began because of the huge sale volume.

Erm.... why?

Erm.... why?

Who knows? Maybe its a combination of no school for most people, some people getting off work (not sure about that last one), and some evil drugs injected into our turkey so that we buy more stuff...

Erm.... why?

I honestly don't know...all of the major stores offer discounts, so that's the motivation to shop on it. A lot of people have the day off, so that's another reason; of course, I'm just guessing.

It's something that retailers noticed a while back, but really started to capitalize on recently, so now they push it with special discounts, etc.

I didn't buy anything today. You couldn't pay me to go into a store today--it brings out the ugliest in people. A 73 year old woman was trampled in a local mall today because people were too assholish to notice they were ramming her into a metal guardrail while they were racing to get to their sale goods.

And if I come off as a little cynical about the whole thing, that's because I'm toning it down. I'm a lot cynical about it.

EDIT: She wasn't trampled to death--just knocked down and kicked and stepped on. (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-1125shop,0,6753979.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines)

The drug is called Triptophane. It only makes you sleepy. The flu shot contains the shopping stimulant.

Neither did I. I usually don't since people can be total assholes on days like this; they seem to forget that a few days later there will be the same item available for the same price, but without the chaos and long lines.

I saw footage of trampling at a Wal-Mart on CNBC this morning. The sad thing is, the people didn't need to do that. If they had waited 30 seconds, there wouldn't have been a problem. No one else came in after the stampede of people, and no one stopped to help the people who fell. It was disgusting.

What? Why wait when you could buy your "Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm-Flailing Tube Man" for $99.95 instead of 103.99? I mean, you get stampedes, scratched car doors and several varieties of the cold as bonus gifts!

I bought nothing today.

I'll probably buy nothing tomorrow.

If I buy anything, I'll buy it as late as possible. The longer consumers hold out on spending, the more prices go down as the holiday approaches. Not to mention the fact that I don't feel like being cattle.
