So recently i decided to pull out the classic game medival total war( with the viking invasion expansion) and i have really been playing that nonstop. So for those of you which have played this game, what faction is your favorite one and why? For me I personally like the Danes. The reason Ilike them is that the start with on province, unlike most other factions, thus making it to where they have to conquer more territories. Also I just love the viking heritage of the people. I have beat the game probably a dozen or so times with the danes.... Now i wish i had better specs on my comp to go out and buy Rome Total war. I think my laptop has the right stuff..but my other comp is rather old...so is it worht going and buying rome total war?

Oh and another thing....What should the next total war game be like?

Personally, I favour the Italians.

I like in the Viking expansion the irish. They are a good faction to start with and out of pure luck knowing me I conquered all of the west coast of mainland britain. I stopped there, as in stopped playing.

I think the next one should be a world war one, either I or II. Would be quite good, but I also agree a napoleonic one would be great.

I play as Sicily and Aragon in the original, modded. For VI, I played the Spanish. Now I play the Napoleonic mod from time to time as the Brits.

Thats cool actually. A trojan war themed game would n't be bad

I still think Shogun was the best game in the Total War series.

A modern TW would be bad. it'd defeat the tactical battlefield purpose as modern warfare certainly isn't charge all your units into a massive bloodbath hand-to-hand fight. a napoleonic era would be reasonable, there's still hand to hand combat and such.

Stick with the ancient era. The perfect next one would be Alexander the Greats Era or the civil wars following his death. You could also add on the pyhrric war for good measure. At this time ancient warfare was at its peek, you need units and weapons options, if you are to make a game out of it.

I admit a troy total war would be interesting, but to get enough variation you need a later time period.

I liked being the Ottoman Turks for some reason. Their campaign is hard as hell but fun. Plus they have cool canons that can fire halfway across the map.

What buildings are needed to get a Chapter House?

The fictional Mongol invasion is a nice twist.

My favourite clan has to be Shimizau or Mori- starting without being surrounded is key to suviving that start in the game.

the Russians were also a favourite of mine, as long as you remembered to pre-empt the golden hoarde.


as for rome total war, maybe i'm playing it wrong (playing the same as i did with Medieval and i'm pretty darn good at the strategy of that (on the map screen - can't be bothered with the battles)) but i got sooo bored playing Rome... it seemed to take forever just to get out of italy.
i'm probably taking too long per turn cos i like to micromanage, but playing for 2 weeks and getting practically nowhere is hardly my idea of fun.
that said a lot of people i know think its a fantastic game and my experience seems to be something of an oddity, so take it or leave it

Any nation with strong chokepoints is good - I like the English and Danes in particular. Unfortunately my computer just went a little shit and stopped show red and green and other such important colours so playing MTW is no longer fun.

Odd - Rome:Total war is much easier than MTW, especially as the Roman factions - I easily managed to conqueor the non-Roman world as the Bruti faction...

I liked Byzantines but I never really got into Medieval.

Rome on the other hand ROCKS!!!! Seluicids are great fun with their pikes, elephants, chariots and even duplicate legionaries.

Church and monastery, I guess, but I haven't played it for several months. I could be wrong.

I played with Aragon a lot, because it had only one province and it was even harder than the Danes, since you had rival factions on all sides. I also played a lot with the Danes and the Sicillians. If I were you, I'd upgrade my computer just for playing Rome-TW (actually, that's exactly what I'm trying to do right now :)).

I personally liked Shogun the best as well. It seemed the different units worked better all around, and for some reason they didn't seem to do stupid stuff like the other two somewhat do, IMO. (Like attacking a city in Rome: TW, I click for my units to go through the gate/wall, and all they do is march up to the wall and stop, and meanwhile are constantly getting attacked by the stupid towers!)

For Medieval(sp), the faction I liked the best was a tie between the Byzantines(sp) and the English. Byz because they have excellent choke points after taking out the Turks, Egyptians, and the Alhomedes(sp) so you can build up massive amounts of armies. English because a mixture of choke points, calvary (the last upgrade especially the best of the game) and the longbowmen absolutely rock!


I like playing the Juli in Rome:TW. Haven't really liked playing the other factions that well, but I haven't tried them all yet.

Carthage is amazing in RTW! I've had elephants fighting in Germany. That's just a little silly...
Anyone know how to unlock Thrace? I've been trying to but nothing so far.

Unlock all factions
Run or go to <your directory>\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign\descr_strat.txt then you will see a list of the nations you can use in the beginning the end unlockable ones and the non playables. cut and past the unplayable factions to the unlockable nations. then save it and close it. now you need to complete a campaign mode and all of the factions will be unlocked

You can actually just move all the ones under the unlocked or nonplayables to the playable section.

My favorite faction is the Turks. I love spreading Islam across all of Europe, and using Janissary Heavy Infantry (those guys are beasts.) They have a pretty nice starting position too. You are next to the rich Egyptian lands and you have good access to the sea.

British comes in second. They also have good sea access and longbow men are terrific. One game I was defending a bridge against the Almohads; I killed ~10,000 men and only lost ~60 spearmen.
