In light of some crappy threads recently ...

Lists are the inane cataloguing of a pointless dead eyed society attempting to validate itself before slowly grinding to an artistic and cultural halt.

Discuss.

In top five form if you wish. :p

I have no argument with that. These alleged documentaries where they just have a bunch of former NME journalists and B list celebrities sitting around discussing some ridiculous list or other are pretty grim, really.

Shopping lists, on the other hand, are very useful

Every issue of Salient magazine (www.salient.org.nz) (victoria university student mag) has loads of top 5s, most of which are inside jokes about being at vic uni so are probably useless for the purposes of this thread.

5... oh, sorry.

I think lists are good ways of comparing quantifiable data. I'm afraid, though, that a lot of the sort of list polls that you seem to be referring to aren't quantitative, but rather qualitative. Furthermore, I think bickering over which is 'better' implies a one-dimensionality of art, culture, personality, whatever, whereas in fact there are many, many criteria to be taken in. So I agree, in essence.
