We all have a favorite metal don't we? Is it the brilliant shine of gold, the value of platinum, the history of copper, the bizarreness of mercury.

I like copper. Not sure why, I just do. It's like a cheap gold and is so versatile in alloys...gold-copper(name?) in coins, zinc-copper(brass) in instruments and furniture, tin-copper(bronze) in weapons, art, and medals...

Mercury is way funky - we had a mercury spill in chemistry the other day, so naturally me and my friend gathered around it poking it with splints. It was crazy - it was ok though, we were wearing safety goggles :D

But other than that silver is the best. Gold just looks tacky, and platinum ain't all that.

Only slightly worse than Tungsten and/or Titanium as far as a decent armor goes and it's highly toxic, so an Osmium armored tank could kill with its presence alone :D

From that poll mercury all the way.

You guys should really check out gallium though. There's a metal that melts at body temperature. The exact toxicity of it is uncertain but it appears to be safer than mercury. So there's a liquid metal you could have some fun with, metal goes solid, metal melts, metal goes solid, metal melts...

hmmm metal...*

Ok, I will tone it down a tad. Making catalysts. Seeing what reactions they can catalyze, then finding out how (the mechanisim) of the catalysis.

You can make some really cool colored complexes with it too (purple, red, yellow, orange....oooooo, colorrrsssss)

A-level is 16-18, though catalysis and redox cycling and the like were all done at the end of the course. Can't really remember what I did, due to my crappy memory, but I seem to remember two distinct things:

V2O5 + 2H+ +2e- -> V2O4 +H2O (?) and the opposite reaction for redox cycling, and

V2O5 -> VO2(-) -> VO(2-) -> V3+ (again, ? plus can't be arsed writing all the balanced, step by step process stuff)

EDIT: And I went into biochemistry for degree, so less thinking for me ;)
