So I got a speeding ticket today.

I'm just driving down the street, minding my own business. Goin 70 mph in a 50mph zone, just trying to get home. The guy in front of me is going pretty damn slow. So I accelerate, hop around him into an empty lane. But NO! up ahead, I see a cop on the side of the road, frantically, I hit the brakes, slowing the car down to 50, hopefully before he saw me. But fate was against me and the cop turned on his lights. Wait a minute, maybe I'm saved, he pulled out in front of me. Lights on. Oh wait, there we go, I got screwed. The cop slows down and gets right behind me, light still on. Fuck. I just got owned.

I pull over to the side of the road. After the usual "do you know how fast you were going" and "can I have your liscense and registration" He proceeded to write me a ticket and send me on my merry way.

And after all that adventure, I now have a 177$ USD speeding ticket under my belt. Go me.

Challenge it. Maybe the cop won't show up, and it'll be dismissed. It can't hurt to try!

Did you admit how fast you were going? If you did, you're screwed.

If you didn't, challenge it. Ask for proof that the police officer tested his gun as required by the manual, and if he didn't, claim that it cannot be 'reasonably ascertained' that the gun was in fact accurate, and ask to get all radar evidence suppressed. If that's granted, ask for a dismissal. It's worked 3 times for me.
This is not legal advice from a qualified attorney. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Sorry, had to put that in there.

...yeah...... but that wasn't for speeding. That was because I was too damn slow. :D

How is that not ducking personal responsibility? Or do you not even care about that?

After the usual "do you know how fast you were going"

Wow, do traffic police actually say that over there? Hehe, I thought it was just another thing from Hollywood.

In terms of speeding? No, not really. As long as it's not excessive, or dangerous.

Then again...70 in a 50? What were you thinking?

I stay a strict 10 over.

ugh...painful memories of a painful song

anyway, I feel your pain. I got one for going 83 in a 65. The only reason they got me and not my friend was because he was only going 82. if he had snagged me about 10 seconds earlier, he would have had me for wreckless endangerment.

...they say it over here, too.

The only time I've ever been stopped for speeding I was doing 53mph in a 30 zone at about 3am. Police dude just told me not to do it again and sent me on my merry way.

I got pulled over walking last week. I got the whole "Where are you going where are you coming from" routine. While walking...I just can't win...

It's called providing for your own defense. It's a right that we have here in the United States. It's cool. You should try it sometime.

And 'taking responsibility' in the sense you mean it, does not just mean waiting until you get caught...if you're that concerned about it, you should beg an officer to write you a ticket if you speed.

What, all the time? You know Speed wasn't real, right?

was the ticket for 20 mph over the limit?

Hehehehe...yes, all the time. Cruise control, baby...though within city limits I stick WITH the limits. On the highway is where I keep just 10 over...they generally won't ticket you for that, though even 15 or 20 over is almost a certainty. It's my formula:)

Nope, they'll usually say "Do you know why I stopped you?" It's just one more way that you can slip up, by admitting that you did something that they didn't know about.

I usually go a strict 5 over if I'm late or want to get somewhere in a hurry. An officer legally cannot initiate a stop if you're in the 1-5mph-over range. It's pretty much the "acceptable limit", to adjust for all technical issues (flawed speedometer reading, etc.)

This is a very California approach. When the speed limit went up to 70 everyone got excited, "Dude, we can totally do 80!" In my hometown where we have to comute a little farther and as a result drove a little faster it was "We're doing 90!"

Scottsdale is pretty lienent when it comes to writing tickets for speeders. I mean, the cops have other things to do, like break up parties of the rich kids who's parents are out of town. Last time I got pulled over for 85 in a 65 and got off with a warning, this time the cop wrote me a ticket.

Bastard, I was driving in a safe fashion the entire time.
