Oh the irony...

Isn't it just so ironic that on the day the British government introduces 24 hour drinking, one of Britains most famous alcoholics, George Best (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4465456.stm), is about to die....

No offense to George Best and his family/friends etc. but i think that this is a sign of things to come.

personally i think 24 hour licencing isn't going to create the armies of alcoholics and drunkards the press and the daily mail say it is. and then i couldn't care less about george best, so... meh *shrugs*

It's a mildly amusing coincidence at best (no pun intended). Can't say I particularly care about Best either, he had an amazing talent and threw it away, then had a second chance at life with his liver transplant and simply abused that. That liver could have gone to someone far more deserving.

Does anyone know of anyway I can get hold of a list of pubs etc. that have been given licences for extended hours, or 24 hour opening in my area? I'm just interested, is all...

I dont want to sound too harsh, but Best brought it on himself. He fucked up once already with this, and should've got the message when he had his first operation. The fact that he kept going just goes to show that he didn't learn his lesson. I really find it irritating that so many regular people in desperate need of liver transplants have to wait such a long time, but Best gets special treatment just because he was *ahem* "famous" once...

Also, the issue of Britain's drinking problem isn't anywhere near as simplistic as some people would have us think. It's not merely about what times places are open to serve drink or not, it's about the cultural attitude towards drink that we as a nation have acquired. Plenty of places in Europe such as Italy and Spain have 24 hour drinking laws, and they don't have anywhere near the amount of problems with alcohol that Britain does...
