I like the idea of naming a holiday after what you have on it rather than what it's supposed to "represent".

I just found out (about a half hour ago) that most of the people who were coming to Thanksgiving this year can't. I also just (about 15 min ago) picked up my Turkey (I had a friend smoke it for me)
Here lies my problem, the smoked turkey smells sooooo gooood, can't I just uninvite everyone else and cook it tonight and eat it all?
sure, it is completely unethical and rude, but come on it's smoked turkey.
I'm hungry and there is a perfectly good turkey sitting in my fridge
NO FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh yeah
Happy Turkey Day :(

hey if you lived anywhere near me, I would invite you, my friend was supposed to get me a 15lb turkey and I ended up with one that weighs almost 25lbs. (which would have been fine when 12 invited people and 4 uninvited were coming but now that there are 6 of us, that is ALOT of turkey)

venison is very good, me thinks.
If/when I start setting up my own thanksgiving feasts, it will have venison and turkey as co-main dishes. as well as untradional roast boar, and an assortment of other goodies. Served with meads, ales, and wines. yum

well, the easiest way is to join up with a re-enactment group that I'm part of. For out Christmas/Yule feast we have ordered a full pig, to be roasted. We then use historically accurate recipes to make an entire feast, which would be considered accepted able during the middle ages/ renassiance time periods.
We are centered in the middle of the United States in a small state known as Iowa.
Though when I start holding my own feasts, the will be a lot more open to the public, since I love huge feasts. At which time I think a surcharge of $10-$20 would be made, but would gurantee a seat and food.

actually I am much closer to the middle of the US than you are (Oklahoma)
I think I may make a chicken stuffed in a duck stuffed in a turkey next year though, with some deer and rabbit on the side.;)

I was actually thinking about turducken this year, but I'm not having to feed that many people. Haven't had one yet, but it sounds really good. Still, it sounds wrong when you are shoving animals inside of other animals and cooking them.
Still, the most unnatural thing to do to an animal before cooking it would be haggis.
*mouth starts to water, falls over*

Turkey was (and remains today) a popular game bird. It was served at the 1621 Pilgrim thanksgiving feast.
And FMP, I assume you mean the L-Tryptophan in turkey making you sleepy myth.
a) There is not enough in even several servings to have an appreciable effect.
b) L-Tryptophan must be taken on an empty stomach and without other proteins to have a sedative effect.
c) The drowsyness is due to having stuffed yourself silly.
d) Several other foods contain equal or larger amounts of L-Tryptophan and are not associated with sleepiness.

Well, I stuffed that 20 lb. bird and shoved him in the oven; now just gotta wait about six hours. Hmmm, what do I do for six hours? Eat! Watch football! Eat!
