So How Will You Spend Your Thanksgiving?

I realize that Thanksgiving is something more those of us who live in the States, but for those of you who celebrate the holiday I wish to know how you will spend it. If you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, I would be interested in hearing how you will spending this Thursday, anyway.

Perhaps a debate may arise of the best pumpkin pie recipe, or perhaps there may be discourse on the finer points of monkey bread. I look forward to any responses.

What the hell is monkey bread?

I was supposed to be going with my boyfriend's family to visit his younger brother (he's in Basic Training right now), but a "family friend" ousted me and usurped my spot on the plane. Now I suppose I'll be spending the evening with my great-grandparents and grandmother, playing cards and eating more food than I ever ever should.

And yourself?

Wait a minute...I do that everyday.

Is it a tradition to eat a lot on Christmas?

All we usually do is just the gifts and then we all talk for a few hours over drinks (cider, hot cocoa, ale, paint thinner.....whatever's around). There's no real big food thing for my family....which I guess is why I love Thanksgiving so much.

Well, I've already started cooking today for thanksgiving. Probably should have some baguettes, stuffing and pumpkin pie ready by the end of today. Tomorrow, it'll be time to work on stuffing the duck and making the sweet potatoes.

Well maybe it's because we don't have Thanksgiving in the UK. It's traditional to eat huge amounts of turkey, 'pig blankets' (mini sausages wrapped in bacon), roast potatoes and Christmas pudding with brandy butter.

We don't have thanksgiving in Britain. I'm not even sure what it is, but I remember the scene from that addams family movie where the natives kill the settlers in the thanksgiving play.

Errrmmm, eat some food and play computer, I guess.

It's usually a bigger thing when I'm at my grandmothers, but since I'm in Panama right now, I really don't care. I would rather not have thanksgiving at all, to tell the truth.

Wrapped in bacon? You live it up. We wrap them in croissant like bread. Which I guess is why we call them "pigs in a blanket" instead of "pig blankets."

Monkey bread is small slices biscut dough rolled in cinnamon and placed in an funnel cake pan. It is then convered in a sweet sugary syrup and baked. It is gooey and delicious. If you have never had some, you have never lived.

I will be going back to my house five blocks from my university and having Thanksgiving dinner with my grandmother and a few other members of my family. It will be a good meal, but there will not be many of us. There are very few members of my family who still live, so we try to enjoy what moments we can as a family. My best friend from high school just got back from basic and AIT, so he will likely be joining us. The world has a new air traffic controller, so beware. Actually, if any of you remember Sniper Country, that is him. He has gone on into the military since leaving Nationstates.

Historically, thanksgiving started because the first colonists in America were so grateful to have survived for a year that they decided to have a big feast to celebrate. I would suggest taking up thanksgiving as a holiday celebration just because it involves large quantities of food and celebrating. For that matter, celebrate Cinco de Mayo just because it's a good excuse to drink lots of Corona with lime in it.

Oh man, pig blankets are great. Actually, we take the sausages wrapped in bacon and then wrap them in dough, turning them into pigs in a blanket.

My family likes to eat huge meals on both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Come to think of it, we try to eat huge meals whenever we can. It still makes my relatives mad that I eat as much as I do and never weight more than 140 pounds, despite the fact that I am six feet tall. They say I could eat a rack of lamb and lose two pounds.

I will be offline over the Thanksgiving weekend, but if no one has given you a recipe by then I can get you mine. Just subsitute in the biscut dough that you make. True, it will probably take a lot of time, but it is worth it.

When I make monkey bread, I make my yeast bread dough a little sweeter than usual, roll it into balls, dip in melted butter, then roll the balls in a sugar & cinnamon mixture. I layer the dough balls into a bundt pan, sprinkling pecan pieces as I go. Finish up by drizzling the remaining butter and cinnamon sugar over the top. When done baking, let cool for a few minutes, upend it out of the pan onto a plate and drizzle with a little honey. You then eat it by pulling off pieces...like a monkey.

Edit: I use the same process to make a garlic monkey bread. Biscuit dough is OK for a quick recipe, but yeast dough is ooooo so much beter.

Oh, I've done that! I just didn't know it was an actual recipie. I made buns like that (with maple syrup instead of honey) as part of a circular centerpiece for a big dinner.

Zooke's recipe sounds good. The ingredients aren't precise, since you are just coating the bread balls anyway. The only other thing I would add is baking recommendation: 350ºF for 35 minutes until done.

We traditionally spend Thanksgiving with my wife's family. We'll prepare a large turkey and all the trimmings, the kids will watch the parade, then we'll have a few drinks and watch football.
Dinner is early afternoon, so tommorrow night, we'll be eating leftovers on Italian bread sandwiches. Scraps will be made into turkey soup.

Its always a good time. It got really cold in the past day,so the fireplace will be lit too, which I love.

The lil red-headed guy is the son of the blonde lady just behind him. He gets the red hair from a recessive gene on both his dad's side ( who isn't in the picture ), and from his mother's side via his grandmother, one of whose brothers has red hair. :)

So far laying in bed. I just got off three consectutive gigs, one which was 3 1/2 hours away from me that as soon as I drove back I had to drive 1 1/2 hours up to SF to work where my primary duty was to drive crews around and capped that off with having to drive a 16' box truck from SF to LA and back to SF where I picked up my car again and drove the 1 1/2 back home. So what ever I do with whatevers left it should involve little to no driving. Dammit.

hey I went through working in Retail on Black Friday when I was young, I know it's crazy.

When you are on a short budget though and your 3 year old asked for a Barbie that costs $40 and you can get it for $5 when you get up early on the day after Thanksgiving though, who is really going to turn that down?

I got my entire shopping for Christmas done last year for about $30, after all the sales, free gift cards, rebates and cupons.

yeah, I know the type you are talking about though, I remember my first year going shopping on Black Friday, there were these two old ladies (in thier 70's) and they got into a fight over a cabbage patch doll (yeah it was the 80's)

I remember thinking "what in the hell is wrong with these people?!"

I am not like that, I am super effiecient, I have been planning this out for 2 weeks, researching everything, I pop in get what I need and am out of the store in less than 10 min. (if I don't get a slow cashier) I have a game plan for tomorrow, maps of the stores, lists of what I am getting sale price, retail price, and any applicable rebates. I have my husband running interference for me (to keep the looters out of my basket) and I have only been in one mild fight with someone in my 15 year history of shopping on Black Friday, and I wouldn't have gotten into that fight except I was pregnant and this lady elbowed me in the stomache to try to get the Furby I had.
