Buying? Probably not. Downloading the CD image illegally? Yeah, it's worth that.
The trouble with it is it gets old too fast. I got maybe a week or so of good interesting gameplay out of it. After that, nothing.
Although it is good to pick up again every so often and play a skirmish or two, I don't think it would be worth the cost of buying it.

It's AoE2 with shiny graphics.
You're better off getting AoE2 with the Conquerors expansion for a fiver in the bargain bin.

Ahem, I've been playing this game for a decent amount of time, and I have to say it's a good RTS. Not a GREAT RTS, but it's pretty good.

I havent even bought it and I know it is good. You could always rent it first if you aren't sure. But any Age of Empires game is good. Don't listen to these bums who like chopping up zombies or shooting them or whatever. btw, Game Informer has it in the top 10.
