I got $20 that says we'll see someone respond with "You can't rape the willing" or something to that effect before the twentieth post.
I wouldn't have thought too many people would be comfortable talking about rape anyway :p
Yes, its called the just world theory - The idea that a person who has had something happen to them has had it happen to them for a reason. Some people believe it to the point that rape victims have been told by judges (in a court room) that they deserved what they got because of how they were dressed! To me it sounds plain ridiculous.

Rape is probably one of the most horrid crimes a person can commit. It is not only violent in nature, but it robs the victim of their most precious possession...their sense of self. To make jokes about an attack that probably several women on NS have endured is greatly inappropriate and shows a lack of understanding and compassion. Due to the horrible psychological wounds that rape leaves, I doubt very seriously if you will have many, if any, women on here willing to share the experience. Maybe this one is best left alone?

Why just rape? what about murder? fraud? theft? unless maybe the thief was stealing a loaf of bread to feed their starving family, of course - then we'll just cut off their hands.
The "answer to rape" isn't revenge. And if you really feel it is, you do it yourself, don't get the state to do it for you.
Right, horrible psychological wounds are best kept bottled up.
Of course not. But, those wounds are best healed with proper professional help and the support of family and friends. I think you would agree that, although most of the folks on here would address the issue intelligently and with consideration, there are a few who would take the opportunity to make crude outlandish remarks. That would be the last thing a fragile psyche would need.

I entirely agree. However, such are the risks of an open forum. Besides, given the topics on discussion here, such consideration is not a high priority.

Exactly. That's why I would be surprised if a discussion of the subject with victims point of view would succeed. Plus, due to the very young age of a number of posters, some of the people who would post do not have an understanding of the nature of rape.

I was raped when i was 19, I wasnt dressed provocatively, I was dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans with sneakers... i did not flirt, i did not do anything but be in the wrong place at the wrong time... to add insult to injury this took place on my birthday... it has been over ten years since then and still when my birthday comes up i end up shuddering because it reminds me what happened, painfully reminds me...

You need a multiple choice option. I was *%$#d twice. Once by a stranger when 15 and hitchiking. (yes, stupid, but at 15 most of us are)
Once at 19 by an aquaintance.
this computer censors the word pertaining to the subject we are discussing
WOW that has to really suck......like how did it happen. I cannot imagine being raped.

No-no one stated that.
I like the ideas of never having to worry about a particular person commiting certain crimes again.
Or finding out rehabilitation really was just a waste of time and money at the expense of another victim.
And a rapist is always just a millimeter away from being a murderer.

I'm really sorry to hear this.
Keep one thing in mind- if you were stark naked, doing aerobics in public, you still shouldnt have been raped.
Style of dress, flirting and provocative behaviour dont mean open season on violent assault.
Its kind of like trying to justify bashing someone's skull till they die because they made faces at you or sing poorly.
Civil people can control themselves. The law requires they do.
The death penalty should be the well know way to deal with convicted rapists.

There is no logic behind this. This is from fact. The rapist struggles and controls the victim through force and strength, most often has a weapon.
Brute force is often needed to force the victim to comply or be quiet. If the victim doesnt comply, the situation escalates.
You also have the rapist that completes the act and doesnt want a witness.
People are stabbed to death for $5.00. There are people victimizing and killing others for the sheer thrill. Dont try to logic this out.
Talk to any cop or anyone with experience-they'll say the same.
Its something the average- naive, but civil person wont understand or want to believe. It doenst make you stupid, but dont believe its not true just because you cant comprehend it.

This is generally the case with any violent crime, including kidnapping. Rape shouldn't be singled out simply because it (oh noes!!!!!1one) involves sex.

And by making the penalty the same, you eseentially encourage this to occur more often.

My god, this disgustion makes my liver shiver.
About the death penalty Im strongly against it. Most people who commit rapes are under the influence of alcohol or stronger drugs. We should know that the tought of right and wrong gets blurry when under the influence. I don't believe two person must suffer so much, as after getting his(hers) mind together, many rappist regret the act theyv'e commited.
One of my biggest fears is that happening to me, even if I trust myself enough to know that I wouldn't do something that cruel.
I don't belive sóme one that has made a mistake (no mater how evil it may have been) should have to suffer death. That there still is death penalty is a abomination to civilisation. Don't let hate and anger get the overhand over you.

You're naive-its ok. RAPE IS A VIOLENT CRIME. Its not a crime of passion. Its commited by cowards that have the violent need to victimize another and over power another person. Its not because the yare horny or a woman is scantily clad. Its not because they have a high sex drive.
Grow up. There is a real world you cant comprehend yet.

Frankly, you're ignorant, and ignorance is never okay. I never said rape had anything to do with a sex drive, and I'm not denying it's a violent crime. But there are a lot of other violent crimes -- kidnapping, assault and battery, armed robbery, etc. -- yet you want to single out rape as something far worse, with a penalty comparable to murder. It makes no sense whatsoever.
Of course, I could be wrong. You are obviously so much more grown up than I -- and so worldly, too.
