I knew of the Aus connection, but I didn't know she was originally from South Africa.

Why don't you look on South African forums, rather than Nationstates? Especially if your going to talk Afrikaans! :)

They are out there, but they're pretty inactive, I think, and don't seem to visit the forum much. There are a few in my region, and there have been a few other regions largely (comparatively) populated by South Africans that I have stumbled across now and then over the years, but nothing recently.

I would expect some South Africans yet they all seem to be in OZ.

Wee! Afrikaans... But yeah... Harles was right on most parts... My uncle was a doctor in the Hutt Valley actually. :p

And um... my Afrikaans is pretty shite, although I understood almost all of what Rondebosch said. I suppose it isn't as shite as my French or my Zulu then. :D

And all the South African Indians are in the North-West of Sydney.

Rondebosch's original post was harder, quite a few words I couldn't guess, but I did get the gist of it.

Of course, that all just applies to reading it - trying to understand someone speak Afrikaans would be whole different matter.:eek:

Might be. I have no idea. I'm not even sure my statement would withstand any large-scale comparison. Of course, I'm not about to undertake anything like that, so we'll likely never find out. :)

Well in Namibia there are Afrikaners, South Africa of course... In Suriname, Flandern and the Netherlands speak Dutch, and in a small part of north-western France, the French part of Flanders. I think it's a beautiful language.

:( Ok, sad but true. I find reading Dutch or German harder than listening to them because the phonetics are different, but the actual words are quite similar.

This explains much. I've seen e-mails that looked like this and I just thought that the uuencoding had gone horribly wrong. At least now I could possibly identify it as Afrikaans.

Emails? As in spam? I've never seen an Afrikaans spam message. In fact, I rarely see any Afrikaans emails, except certain internal office emails sent by Afrikaans people.

Afrikaans, although technically an African language (as in from/used in Africa), is not an African langauge in terms of origin. As you have possibly read in this thread, it is descended from Dutch and is, I think, in the same groups of languages as German (Germanic languages group). I've never seen an email in an African language, which is actually quite sad, now that I thnk of it, because there are so many languages and dialects in Africa, but they have to compete with international languages such as French and English (one of the reasons why SA has 11 official languages, which is cool from a "preserve culture" perspective, but which has become an admin nightmare).

(And, come to think of it, I've seen maybe two spam emails in French, and a handful in Mandarin. Everything's always in English.)

Kakkopf, thank you. I'm Cape Coloured, so I only know "High Afrikaans" and not much of that. I'm waiting for my mum to translate it for me, she's fluent. Though I PWNZ her with Xhosa and i'Zulu.
