If you could start a band...

...what kind of music would you play?

Most recently I just finished with an indie rock (http://www.daymonthyear.net) band. Now I'm working with a band with no particular direction other than "let's sound like a punkier Soul Coughing", and I have a standing offer from a signed emoish-indie band.

SO I wondered, what would you chose...or start something different, what would it be?

I'd start a boy band, and then I'd go solo and do crappy pop and get signed by Jive records, or whatever, and make tonnes of money while all the tabloids wonder if I'm gay or not.

Sort of like Robbie Williams.

I would do punkish versions of oldies songs. (I say punkish because we all know they wouldn't be punk, just I would add the driving bass line and the kick ass drums.):D

I would start a Death Metal band, and call it Cuddly Kittens. I would wear nothing but a thong and a dog collar, I'd grow my hair really long and put it in pigtails, and I'd get 50 slutty naked women to dance on stage, while I yelled incoherently into a microphone and drank liquor out of a baby bottle.

Then when the show was over, I'd have sex with the ugliest girl at the concert on stage, and let everyone else watch.

Nah, the trick here if you want to play ersatz punk versions of old tunes is to slide up the neck of the guitar everytime there is a chord change...

Frex, every time there is a change to a G, instead of just playing a bar of G you play F#-G-G-G-G-G-G-G, everytime there is a change to a C, you play B-C-C-C-C-C-C-C. Of course whole tone slides also work. It is an idiotic formula, but it works.

Been there, done that. Part of a band that tries not to play any "kind" of music, but our own mix of driving hardcore-punk guitar or a syncopated, heavier power/bar chord based sound and jazzy bass lines backed up by heavy, drums at as fast a tempo as our drummer can push them to.

We do political/social lyrics of the lefty variety (mostly my own writing). I guess if you had to label it you would call it punk, but that's not really what we want.

We've even half-written something in 5/4...

My last band was a high-speed power metal band that I started in highschool. It lasted a long time, came really close, and then we proved that one in every four metalheads is an alcoholic and two in every four are assholes (myself included). Now that I'm done with my break from music, I'm working on something new. Hard rock with an acoustic feel. Yeah, its hard to envision, but if you've ever heard Sentenced, you'll at least have a rough idea. Nothing special, no shreds, no songs at 220bpm that piss off your producer (I wish I was kinding), just good old fashioned rock n' roll with a hard edge and a dark feel.

Heh, wasn't it nice back when that was true? Sadly, the term "indy" now denotes a particular genre in the minds of alot of people. There is a TV show on public access here in Chicago that shows mostly indy rock. Over the past few years the music hasn't changed much but you've been seeing less and less label tags like "Screaming Ostrich Records" and more and more "Columbia." Sign of the times, my man, new american genres are still owned by the Big 4 the second they become comercially viable.

I'd get a drummer and a singer and then I'd record all of the rest of the instruments on my own. The result would be a combination of Bruce Springsteen with more lead guitar and vocal harmonies, Meat Loaf with more vocal harmonies and less suck, The Eagles with more of an edge and Eric Clapton with more texture and it would turn the world of crappy modern rock on its head.

As a side-project I would release concept albums that sound like the early days of The Moody Blues when they were recording their Classic Seven albums.

Well we would change the style of the music as the story progressed. Different parts of the story would require different styles to play. For instance, when the main character in our epic is a child, our music would have to have a more child-like and playful tone. Then, as tragedy of course befell our hero, our music would take a more epic tone. It would be great.

The political stance of the members of the band is probably ontheLEFTside, but who cares?

Now, anyway, we gots four members, all with extremely mediocre skill, except our lead guitarist who mildly kicks a lot off ass. Our second guitarist doesn't know how to play, and our bassist is just learning. I'm on drums, and I'm decent. We're all doing vocals.

When we can actually play, we will be a punkrock/nerdrock/deathmetal band, and we will pwn. If we had to choose a different name, we would be t3h pwn*s.

Some sort of metal band sounds good to me, whether it be singer, guitar, bass, drums, or keyboard. Doesn't matter to me (although I'd have to learn how to do any of those except singing).

Actually... must have been a couple of years ago... Two friends of mine (who play electric guitar and drums) and I (who play viola) got together a few times in an attempt to write a song as a band. I remember it was called "The Snack Song" - what it's about is apparent from the title. We wrote the lyrics (which were really stupid) and a repetitive, simple intro, and practiced it a few times, but it just sort of fell apart after that for lack of effort, I guess. (Both of these friends are two of the laziest people I know)

Besides that, the only "band" I've been in is a trio I've got going with two other friends who play violin and flute - we play classical music, obviously.

only heavy metal is allowed to be considered music!! my band would run around doing all sorts of crazy shit like setting ourselves on fire and having duels on stage... i guess we MIGHT sing too, but whatever keeps the tickets selling.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS INDIE ROCK. INDIE DENOTES A BAND'S INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL. UGH.

Anyway, when I start my band (seriously, I will), it'll be Progressive.

Incorrect. Indie Rock is what is continually change its genre name. Bands that follow the sound of the bands of early 90's independent music are now called Indie Rock instead of the former names of New Wave, Alternative, Post-Punk, or New Rock. It is a misleading name, but currently it is a genre.

i'd have a folk band. we'd maybe be called deathmetalsuicide or something, and cover guns songs while sounding like don mclean/joan baez

I am in a band, and we mostly play heavy/death metal. Our name is Toyz in the Cellar, and I do all the vocals. Screaming and growling mostly.

I would start a band (other than the ones I mentioned when starting this thread) of Celtic Rock that plays mostly traditional songs. Kind of like a more traditional Pogues, but with a rockier feel.

Of course finding a penny whistle player is always a problem.

being...you know...a pirate and all, one would think that Grog/Folk rock would've been your first response. :)

EDIT: Penny whistles are easy to play, finding someone shouldn't be hard.

I'm a man of many tastes :D

And about the whistle: just find someone willing to learn to play. I learned to play bass all by myself because some friends were starting a band and needed a bassist.

I'd go for some good old-fashioned weirdness with good tunes. I'm thinking Satriani/Biffy Clyro/Behold... the Arctopus/Mastodon/Kyuss/The Wildhearts. Yeah, something like that.

And I'm in an emo band. Go figure.

See kids? This is what happens when stupid people start labelling things.

That wiki article is pretty funny.

Melodic trash with faint influences from really Old heavy & rock bands.
Hopefully not some fanboyish stuff tho.
