ok, this is cool. it seems some people took it upon themselves to catalogue and analyze a huge amount of music according to (they claim) 400 musical characteristics. anyway, they've used this taxonomy to create a thing called pandora (http://www.pandora.com/), which allows you to enter the name of a band or song you like and creates a whole lineup of things you might also like. and then it actually plays them - like some sort of 'choose your own adventure' internet radio.

Whoot! Whoot!

This is one the best things I've ever come across on the net. EVER!!
Now, all I need to perfect my audible experience is one of those pairs of silent headphones, that sends out soundwaves w/ the exact opposite frequency as those coming in, to block out annoying and ambient sounds.

Man the guys that came up w/ this had Brains. Brains, I say.

They think Kyuss has a vocal-centric aesthetic...i'd dispute that. Hmm. I'm listening to something by the "12 stones" now...seems a bit nu-metalish though.

EDIT- Now it's onto a band called Shinedown, which is awesomely stoner rock. This rules. RULES, I say.

Yeah, it seems to be that every second song or so is what i'm after...maybe they throw in a few "maybe" tracks to give some variety.

But now it's gone from Kyuss to Fugazi. I mean, I like Fugazi, but I wouldn't call those two bands similar in any way.

Sortof.

It seems to switch between the two. Every second song is exactly what I want to hear right now. The rest is mostly emo...

Just started a new search with Against Me!

heh, when i did that the playlist eventually got to playing some stuff by rise against. which is amusing - i never thought of them as being overly similar other than being another band i happen to like (even if the singer's girlfriend unustly fired me from my job once) and having the word 'against' in their name.

While I HAVE heard of 'Rapeman' before, no - I unfortunately have never ACTUALLY met Kim Gordon. Much less, scored her panties. :(

And, I certainly haven't had option to 'know her, biblically'.

But she HAS been rocking my world now, for quite a while... :)

I could be out of the loop too, but I think that's the case. She might have done collaborations, but i'm not sure of any solo career. It'd be cool to check out if she did have one, though. :)

She's in a band called Free Kitten.
Rapeman was one of Steve Albini's musical groups.

you have to remember though that my purple hair (which was also blue, orange, green, white, black, yellow, pink ect, at some point) was pre-hot topic, I was the only kid in my school, in fact the only kid I knew that had a non-natural hair color at all (that includes highlights) It was pretty shocking to a lot of people out here in Bible-land.

I just noticed they say they'll be 'ramping up' the advertising over the 'next few months'. Hopefully it's not audio. That was the most annoying part of the yahoo version of this idea; it would stick a preview or video ad in between every couple songs which sucked.

I thought the most annoying part of the yahoo one is when they tried to sneek in U2 into my music, U2 has nothing to do with what I was listening to.

They kinda do the "other people who listen to what you do, also listen to this"

the thing I like about this one, is they have broken down what I like about the music and pick similar things.

Yeah, this site rocks! makes you wonder how exactly they analyse the specific characteristics of each song. Must be some pretty sophisticated software, I'd imagine. (I doubt they personally analyse every one of 300,000 songs)
