Are You a Pool Shark?

I'm curious if everyone else in the world (outside the U.S.) likes to play pool in the bars, clubs, and pubs, (or at home, if your lucky)?

Me personally, it's the main reasons I like to go out to the bars anymore. And since I don't have a table of my own, it's one of the only places to go. I'm not a shark, but I'm pretty damn good. I used to win money for drinks playing 3 Ball. Sometimes I drank free all night, sometimes I didn't.

It's one of my favorite things to do, and I was just curious who likes to play, where they are from, and how big is it in the country you're in?

America must be an even stranger country than I thought - no cricket, no rugby (except that 'American Football', which is like rugby for wimps), and now no snooker:

LMAO!! Pool is also a hell of a lot easier, which is why I play pool and never snooker (I'm already shit enough at pool).

And for me as well, pool is one of the main things I do when I go out to bars/pubs/whatever. Great fun! And if you're too lazy to look under my name, I'm in the UK.

I go to a local snooker club reguarly. I play both pool and snooker there. I must say I am alot better at pool than snooker, but enjoy both. Pool is not for people who cant add up by any means. I have won some money out of it, but obviously it is a club, so its not technically allowed. Shh...

In response to your question, this means no Im not really. I live in England.

So Snooker is pool, with a bunch more rules, right? Bah, I can't remember my own phone number when I'm at the bar, why would I want to remember all those rules?

Pool is more like, "You hit the solids, I hit the stripes, Eightball last. GO!"

Ugh, American Pool is so ugly. In Britain it's played with red balls and yellow balls (you can steal the red ones from the Snooker players), and the cloth is green (I gather that it's blue in America?).

green, red, blue, black, I've seen them all actually. Mostly green though.

Yes, and pool is played in the pub, where no-one can add up properly anyway :P

I LIKE to play pool, unfortunately I cant. I am awful, I am perfectly capable of bouncing the cue ball off the fire exit on the other side of the room whilst trying for the easiest shot you will ever see.

Still, a few more beers and I turn into a pool god (I think :P)

Pool is considerably easier than snooker, as the table is smaller and the pockets are bigger. Though the cue tip is larger, so you get less accuracy. I'm shit at snooker (highest break = 26), but I can clear up a pool table from the break. And I love 9-ball.

i saw a full sized snooker table the other day and when they say it's big - they mean it's massive, its like a field.
it would probably take me a good hour and a half to clear it:(

I used to work at a pool hall so I am super good (not really, IRL I suck)
I seem to play better when I am not playing with someone I like, for example I can play pretty well against a stranger, but when I play against my husband I make stupid mistakes (probably because I can "feel" him looking at my butt)

I prefer to play 9 ball, because it is super easy and really helps me plan my shots when playing regular pool.

I play pool.

I recently learned that I can't break while wearing heels. I get no power whatsoever. My aim seems to get a bit worse too. Amazing the difference 4 inches makes. I had to play in my socks last time I went out.

I'm a streaky player--I'll run a table and then I can't sink a shot for an hour. It's quite frustrating. I once played a friend of mine--good player, with real talent--and beat him eleven straight games. By the end of it, I was talking shit like you wouldn't believe, and it got him even more frustrated. Next time out, he waxed me, like seven in a row.

I also notice that I play better when there is good music on, if someone plays rap or country, my game goes downhill big time. I wonder what is up with that?!
I am going to start bringing an extra $5 so I can control the juke box while I am playing, see if I can beat my hubby more than 70% of the time then:p

*did I mention that I am overly competitive

Naw, not much difference at all really. Baseball really is better than cricket if you ever played both. American football was not always like rugby for wimps, but the number of deaths became unacceptable and the corporate take over of all the teams ended up turning them into nothing more than advertising banners. Now, a quarterback can walk onto the field in a business suit, call three plays and walk off without ever getting dirty.
Snooker...of course we have it. I grew up in a poolhall literally. My grandmother owned it. We had 35 tables, 10 of which were snooker tables and people played all day for a penny per minute. It's a great game, but so is rotation and 9 ball.

I'm just getting into pool. Strangely, I'm better at tight angles than straight shots - is this true to pool in general or just me? Also, if anyone can tell me how to put spin on the ball feel free.

how are you wanting to spin it?

on a straight shot use the reflection on the ball of the light above to line up your shot, make sure that it is straight.

if you hit the cue ball a little below the center it will make it spin back (to keep you from scratching) is that what you wanted?

I bought my current cue from the money I earned beating people at the place I used to play at.

I play 9-ball on Thursday nights. I'm not an expert, but I'm not bad either. I don't play for money.

I do know people who do play for money, and the better players seem not to be so much better technically, but psychologically.

Thankyou. When I started uni I made a pact with some friends that, by my 4th year, I would be fleecing cocky first years for their hard-earned student loans to live like a king. So far, I can fleece the drunk ones :p

EDIT: Oh, I started playing pool at the start of first year, ~2 months ago.

Oh, THAT kind of pool.

I used to be a pool shark, but the sort that would lurk about in public pools biting people. The police made me stop. Now I don't know what to do with the strap-on dorsal fin.
