This time in Ireland, where a minister is under attack for smiling in a photo where he is accompanied by a large gun.
For the story, see http://www.irishexaminer.com/breaking/story.asp?j=133809480&p=y338yxx6x&n=133810089&x=

Mr O'Dea is pictured on the front of two national newspapers this morning looking down the sight of the gun with a smile on his face.

Opposition politicians have accused the minister of engaging in a tasteless and insensitive publicity stunt at a time when gun crime is creating real fear on the streets.

Seems like more pols should be thinking about letting the Irish defend themselves instead of trying to make something out of nothing.

This has so little to do with being anti gun or pro gun or anything in between its ridiculous.he's the minister for defence and an ex ranger and the media asked him to pose with a gun.so he posed with a gun.the point is, he should have known the media would twist it,so really this is about how much cop on the minister for defence has.

they were making jokes about it in the dail, its clearly not a serious matter

Wait, the minister of Defense can't pose with a gun? What should he have instead, a white flag?

No, his job is to make sure that anyone threatening his country and people get their asses soundly kicked.

So how the heck do his opponents tie this into domestic crime? It seems to me, the opposition is just using this to scare citizens.

guns are just so dangerous, nobody should be allowed to have any, not the cops, not the soldiers, no one and what for? they could just get into the wrong hands.

Alright, you waltz on down to Africa and tell all those mean governments that they better give up their guns or else be poked with a pointy stick!

They'd hand their guns over pretty damn quickly if I told them where I was threatening to stick my pointy stick.;)

Well spotted. The reason I discuss American politics so much is the massive ineffectiveness of the Irish opposition.

I have that picture on my wall for sheer hilarity factor. But I don't think O'Dea was an ex-ranger.

Thanks. I rationalized the difference between the picture with a rifle/machinegun and the text about a pistol to sloppy reporting.

I wonder if anyone knows the first rule of gun safety out there in Ireland?

I'm a member of a gun club. Believe me, It's drilled into us at every possible opportunity. I was suspended for a month when I accidently didn't follow it.

That's why I didn't think he was army. They must have removed the clip before they handed to him. While I'm not up on army regulations, allowing your own minister for defence to shoot himself or the press must rank pretty high on a list of things not to do.

I suppose if a photographer is stupid enough ..., no that isn't right, either. We'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they used a remote trigger or a time-delay on the shutter.
