He left Los Angeles (because he thought it was too violent), and now he's leaving France for the same reason.

Maybe he should move to Antarctica.

So when is Roman Polanski moving out of France so we can prosecute him for drugging and raping a thirteen year old?

I mean Chinatown was good, but it doesn't make up for that.

That is not the only reason that Depp moved to France. He said that if President George W. Bush was re-e;ected that he would move to France. (probably because he was displeased with how the U.S. was being run)

Though I wouldn't take such drastic measures...I don't blame him.

Okie, first of all, Depp didn't leave because of Bush or for any political reasons. He moved to France in 1998, long before W even decided to run for President. His only real political rants are about the rights of Native Americans and the treatment of the elderly. You can't lump him in with the rest of "Hollyweird" just because he made some movies.

Second, I'm not aware Alec Baldwin (who is fiercly patriotic, by the way) or Barbara Streisand made any such promises to leave.

And after Baldwin decided the right course of action, during the Clinton impeachment, was to stone Henry Hyde's house, I think he gave up all claims of patriotism.

Alec Baldwin, and his wife (now ex-wife) promised to leave - twice - once during each election.

People have raised money to fly them out of the country (several websites for that). It was on the news. You would have had to have been on Pluto to have missed it.

There's quite a few Hollywood and MTV types who promised vehemently that they would leave and renounce their American citizenship.

Most don't have the balls to do it.

1] I'd like a source on his promise to leave. His direct quote and where/when he said it.

2] I'd like to know when being a patriot in this country stopped meaning dissidence and/or civil disobedience and started meaning love the President at all costs and support the nation no matter what.

Well, if I got in to office I'd make sure that you had to love the president (me) and the nation under penalty of imprisonment and/or death...but as far as I know that hasn't happened yet and civil disobedience is still a symbol of true patriotism.

Oh, ok. I read your post quie fast, and thus skipped the essential word (the one that made the difference).
Now, I get even more worried when I see people who have never loved Bush (although acted as such) moving away from him because not even their pet monkey is conservative enough (conservative/liberal: let me note that I get quite confused, because in the US these words do not have the same meaning as they do in the rest of the world).

Of course, we in Romania have not managed anything close to Finland (we had widespread violence from 89 to 92 - so, France, I'm not impressed). Johnny, don't consider us as a residence.

But he didn't even leave for the reasons people are attributing to him. He left long before this most recent election, or before Bush was even elected the first time. It's absurd. They just want to hate him for whatever reason they can.

Actually, it's because they don't know the reason. They forget that history did not begin on Sept 11, 2001. Depp left in 1998, but they'll claim it's because he was unhappy with the Bush election .... in 1998 .... *coff*.

It's common enough knowledge; going to work for your satisfaction isn't worth the effort.

When Baldwin advocated stoning the chairman of the House Judiciary committee because he disagreed with constitutional process of impeachment, he went far beyond the traditional concepts of dissidence and civil disobedience. That's not patriotism.

In all fairness to Baldwin, Streisand, and others, they have just fallen into the trap of believing their opinions have more merit than they deserve. Otherwise, they'd limit their off screen activities to self-promotion -- something they're good at.

MediaMatters (http://secure.mediaresearch.org/news/mediawatch/1999/mw19990111p4b.html) seems to have him dead to rights with the Henry Hyde issue.

"They voted on one article of impeachment already. And I come back from Africa to stained dresses and cigars and this and impeachment. I am thinking to myself, in other countries they are laughing at us 24 hours a day and I’m thinking to myself, if we were in other countries, we would all right now, all of us together, [starts to shout] all of us together would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death! We would stone him to death! [crowd cheers] Wait! Shut up! Shut up! No shut up! I’m not finished. We would stone Henry Hyde to death and we would go to their homes and we’d kill their wives and their children. We would kill their families. [stands up, yelling] What is happening in this country? What is happening? UGHHH!"

Pretty patriotic, I'd say ... "they're making fun of us". Truth is actors have too few brains and too much exposure. They need read what's in front of them and not what pops into their 'minds'.

This is already too much effort, any rant like that is just stupid. Baldwin clearly wants the U.S. to be like those other countries that are "laughing at us". Any other interpretation is mincing words a little too closely. But then a good Clintonian would do that.

Yeah, nothing like that whole "if" thing to confuse people, especially conservatives. I'm going to remember this post and will use it when I find future posts of yours using the word "if" in them.

Baldwin is a patriot, probably more so than you. He loves this country. This country made him what he is today and he recognises that. Like all patriots, myself included, he is disgusted with the direction this country has turned (ie. down the toilet).

But, then again, I often forget that conservatives and the "Right" think this country is absolutely fabulous and couldn't possibly ever be any better.

Well here you are spouting off your beliefs to anyone who will read them. It's certainly not the actors' faults that they have a bigger forum to present their views. If your only qualm is the magnitude, then you really don't have a leg to stand on, since you're doing the exact same thing they are.
