Favorite bands?

I was just wondering what are some of the favorite bands of the forum peoples here at NS. Hopefully this isn't an extremely noobish type thread :\. I know that most of the discussion here is, of course, political and/or religious, but I figure that this particular section still says "discussion or debate on anything."
Anyway, to list off my current favorite bands or artists...
Death (The first ever "death metal" band, and a very progressive metal band. Best musicianship I've ever heard out of a metal band in my life. Too bad that they're gone now :(. RIP Chuck Schnuldier)
Acid Bath (Louisiana metal band. VERY unique, kind of jazzy even. "New Death Sensation" is one ridiculously beautiful song O.o)
Dir En Grey (Genre less japanese band. Poster boys for "visual kei" or visual rock, but that doesn't mean anything for how they sound. Some of their songs are dark dark metal, some are very bright and poppy, some are even rap.)
Immortal Technique (I'll get in trouble with any conservatives for mentioning this man, but I don't care. Underground political rapper from Harlem. Very awesome in my opinion)
You?
Here's my latest, in no particular order.
Rush: Prog Rock at its finest. No boring shit here --- it's all great.
Husker Du: One of the most important bands of the 80's. Bob Mould's guitar style influenced virtually every "Alternative" band.
The Cure: Mellow and moody, but at the same time, melodic and catcy. Great stuff.
Bob Mould: Very personal music with a sarcastic edge.
The Professionals: Super-catchy Power Pop.
The Eagles: This is my favorite Rock band of all time. I actually love all of the stuff preceding "Hotel California" such as "Already Gone", "Take it Easy", etc.
Earth Wind & Fire: To deny that this band is amazing is to commit heresy to the nth degree.
Matchbox 20: I like them. It's a combination of what the Eagles did and a little bit of Earth Wind & Fire. Especially on their second album Mad Season.
Rhapsody and Luca Turilli: These two bands are very very interesting. They are metal bands, but their music is in 1200 AD bard style. Ie, they tell tales about sorcerous lands, etc. They also use full Choir and Orchestral accompaniments. Completely amazing. The singing isn't too amazing, but just the entire concentration of different music types is astounding. (an Acordian and a Heavy metal beat? Yeah, that's the shit).
The Brian Setzer Orchestra: JAZZ! JAZZ! JAZZ!
Royal Crown Revue: MORE JAZZ! MORE JAZZ! MORE JAZZ!
Aerosmith: Pink...
Death (The first ever "death metal" band, and a very progressive metal band. Best musicianship I've ever heard out of a metal band in my life. Too bad that they're gone now :(. RIP Chuck Schnuldier)
Hell yes! Chuck lives on in the masterpieces he has left us. In my personal "Musical Hall of Fame"... Chuck sits there playing chess with Beethoven. It's kind of hard to get into my Musical Hall of Fame... You have to be dead and you have to never have made subpar music after your first album/symphony/opera/whatever...
Oh as far as my favorite bands go... I have quite a few... But because I've already posted that lsit in the "What is metal" thread not long ago, I'll just name a few... (at least one from each subgenre of metal)
Death
Scythe - an obscure death metal from Germany...
Savatage - symphonic metal
Iron Maiden - traditional heavy
Judas Priest - speed metal
Fates Warning - progressive/power metal
Candlemass - doom metal
Electric Wizard - stoner doom metal
Finntroll - Folk Metal
Stratovarious - Black Metal
Eisregen - a somewhat obscure German semi-melodic black metal band
Black Swan - a very obscure melodic black metal band
At the Gates - Gothenburg
Blind Guardian - power metal
Spiral Architect - the most technical prog metal (actually very likely the most technical band ever)
Mekong Delta - technical thrash metal (an extremely underrated technical thrash band)
Metal Church - classical thrash metal
Moonsorrow - viking metal
Sirenia - goth metal
Tiamat - atmospheric goth/doom metal
Strapping Young Lad - industrial death metal
Cacophony - shred/speed metal
um I better stop now... before I can't...

My French teacher's favorite band is Judas Priest XD. She talks about how Ozzfest rocks every now and then. It's kind of unsettling, considering she seems like a generally insane foreign language teacher, with no traces of being a metal head :\
Oh, and one surprisingly good area of music that I discovered due to an academic club I'm in, Renaissance era choir music. O.o. "Adieu Ces Bons Vind De Lannoys", a piece by Guillame DuFay is especially good.
But I hate "El Grillo" by Josquin Des Prez!!!!
Besides that it's pretty stuff.
(Simon and Garfunkel was one of my first musical loves! Along with The Beatles and Elvis)

I'm not much of a metalhead either, by stereotypical standards. I don't always wear band t-shirts and my hair isn't too my shoulders, nor do I ever say "These fries slay" or "That burger crushes all." Metal is very diverse genre... and besides your teacher was probably a fan of priest since the 70s...

Yeah, she has.
Hehe, the thought of saying "That burger crushes all" with a particularly demonic tone is really just too awesome. I'm going to have to start doing that, along with already using gamer speak in everyday conversation. "You just got owned, n00b."
My hair is to my shoulders, but it's clean and well groomed, and besides that very minor resembelence to a metal head, I don't fit the stereotype.
Yeah, she has.

And why stop there? Instead of saying "I'm gonna go to the restroom." say "To the grim and frostbitten flushable forest of defecation I shalt go, to shed the blackened contents of my darkest bowels."

Rush: They just kick ass and have been doing it for decades.
Dream Theater: Just wow. See them live. It's well, scary.
Tony MacAlpine: My favorite Neoclassical Fusion guitarist, and one of the best keyboard players on the planet.
Greg Howe: Not Steve Howe (Yes), but Greg Howe. Started out a Shrapnel "Varney guy" but evolved into more Jazz Fusion. Latest CD is with Victor Wooten and Dennis Chambers. Maybe the most talented trio ever assembled, ever.
Yngwie Malmsteen: I pretty much emulated him as a guitarist for 15 years. Yeah, he is a arrogant ass, but man he can flat out play.
Whitesnake/w John Sykes
Pat Benatar: She was just kick ass
Boston: 'Nuff said
There are alot of others but that is a overview. :D
A black metaller? Excellent. I need some reccommendations for some more black metal...
Abigor -- i have not heard anything by them... what do they sound like?
Absurd -- same as above
Bathory -- from what i've heard i am somewhat interested in the band that some claim started viking metal... which album would you reccommend?
Behemoth -- dont much like from what i've heard
Burzum -- i have been trying to find some burzum... but no such luck...
Carpathian Forest --- i have bloodlust and perversion (the best of) and i quite like it, any albums i should definately check that are not mostly on the best of album?
Darkthrone -- don't much like from what i've heard
Dimmu Borgir -- meh
Emperor -- same as darkthrone
Gorgoroth -- don't know much about them, what do they sound like?
Graveland -- same as above
Immortal -- call of the wintermoon is a hilarious music video.
Marduk -- if i remember right, i don't think i like what i heard from them
Mayhem -- same as above
Nargaroth -- don't know them too well... whats their sound like?
Noturnal Mortem -- i have twilightfall and i love it... any albums have a similar sound... i dont particular feel i'll enjoy their venture into NSBM
Rotting Christ -- meh
Satyricon -- awesomeness... i've been really trying to get an album of theirs... which album would you reccommend
Samael -- i have blood ritual and want to really get passage...
Aside from the bands mentioned above... I'm also partial to the following bm bands... (they are mostly melodic bm)
Black Swan (i wonder if you heard of them... very few have... they have only one album and i dont think they were with any other relatively known band)
Graveworm
Ancient Rites (i like but not as much as all the other bm bands i mention here...)
Eisregen (excellent german black metal)
Radigost
Also how's I.C.E.? Their album art has been intriguing me for a while... but I hear they sound like Immortal and I'm not too partial too Immortal...
Guns N' Roses: Axl Rose is the last true rockstar and the greatest frontman of all time. Backed by the greatest songwriter of all time and best guitarist. You can't go wrong with the band that ruled the world from 1987 to 1994. They changed what rock was, made it better, and then allowed different ideas to break them up. They were the loudest, most controversial, best band in history. Rock on, Ax'.
(Axl threatening to kill Kurt Cobain was good too.)
The Stone Temple Pilots: The band was formed because the frontman, bass player, and guitarist found out they were all dating the same SoCal girl. Can't go wrong with a band that found it's roots like that; even if it's NOT a hairband. Not really as big as they could have been since they were accused of being a Pearl Jam ripoff. Still a great band. Eventually they broke up after their frontman became more about drugs than about breathing.
VELVET REVOLVER: The best of both worlds. We've got Slash, Duff, and Matt from Guns N' Roses; some dude from the Nine Inch Nails; and SCOTT WEILAND (see above.) Not the best songwriting, but with HARD vocals, hairband like guitar playing, drugs, vocals, drugs, random sounds, drugs, and some GN'R covers: This is the best band out today.
Egocenturia
19-11-2005, 06:07
In no particular order:
Kraftwerk: Kick ass German techno group. Been around for ever, but so cool.
The Beatles: You can't go wrong with a group that defined an entire generation. Plus, they had such an amazing, ever changing sound. Brilliant.
The Who: I like to think of The Who as The Beatles, if the Beatles did harder rock. Tommy was a great show.
Pink Floyd: Listening to a bunch of stoners from the 70's sing about acid trips while you drift off to sleep (not a drug induced, for the record ;) )? Priceless.
Weird Al: Terrible singer, but an wonderful creativity.
That's about all I can think of for now.

Top 3:
Pink Floyd: From the Barrett era, to the classic era and then the Gilmour era, you just can't go wrong with Floyd. Roger Waters is quite easily the best British songwriter alive, and one of the best songwriters of all time. Without question, David Gilmour is the best guitarist alive, and as far I'm concerned opitimises what playing guitar is all about. Rick was an alright keyboardist, and Nick was very sub-par drummer, but the hey. Roger couldn't exactly play bass very well, but meh. They made some of the best music, and any band that can survive the loss of two frontmen, been rocking for almost 40 years and can still draw a hell of a lot of attention for a classic line-up reformation at a charity gig has got to say something about that band.
Jimi Hendrix: This covers his solo albums, his work with the Experience and his work with the Band of Gypsys. I almost hate saying this because it makes me sound like a brainwashed teenager who goes along with the hype, but quite frankly, he is the greatest guitarist to have walked this earth. To see and/or listen to him live is just amazing; the music is so powerful it almost paralyses you. He was one with his guitar; he could express his every thought and emotion. He wrote some of the best riffs and songs in rock history. He revolutionised the way the guitar was played, even looked at in general. He succesfully combined pyschadelia with blues and hard out rock music. He is one of the most influential musicians of all time, and is still one of the best known, even 35 years after his death.
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble: Again, one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Again, dead. Very similar to Hendrix in playing ability; both had the ability to express their every thought and emotion, to solo for as long as it took for them to fulfill themselevs without it ever getting boring, and neither were too concerned about making it big and making money out of their music. Anyways Stevie is possibly the best blues guitarist of all time in my opinion. Died in a helicopter crash after playing with Eric Clapton. Truly a tragic incident. But still, 15 years later he's still touching people with his music and emotion.
Anyways, others include Runrig, Dire Straits, Yes, Rush, The Eagles, The Beatles, Radiohead. Woo, my music rocks :p
In no particular order, and I'm not sure I'm not forgetting anybody either.

Another one of these threads...I say that not because I'm sick of them, but because I invariably forget someone worth mentioning.
I think that since I have too many, I'll just post from one (very broad) type of music, and then if the thread lives on I'll post from other types.
Since metal seems to be dominant, I'll post it.

I'm sure a few did. However, they turned out near-perfect symphonies, concertos, sonatas, etc. They didn't walk up to a microphone after shooting up heroin or snorting coke, and yell into it.

I do believe the reason why composers never vomited into a tuba bell is because they saved the truly wild stuff for the after-party.

God Forbid- mostly really good songs
Rush- best prog rock I've heard so far, though I'm a bit new to the genre
Stick with Rush, because they're about the only really good Prog Rock band out there. Not one song is trite and/or boring, which is rare for Progressive.

Well... I like them a lot, but they wrote a buttload of filler. Lots of boring songs.

I just walked in, & everybody's spouting huge lists of bands! Well, here're my two cents:
Rush: Spirit of Radio is the greatest song alive.
Boston: Other than other Rush pieces, the only two songs that can rival Spirit of Radio are More Than a Feeling & Peace of Mind. Too bad they turned into drink-free, tree-huggin' PETA freaks.
Queen: How could they only merit one mention in this entire thread? I'll give'em another.
Other gooders are far too numerous to attempt a listing. Suffice it to say that I agree with nearly all of the aforementioned, 'cept all the metal, of which I am too ignorant to form a valid opinion. Exception: Metallica, whose greatness cannot be described in words.
Also a big nod to Jewish Righteousness for the classics mention. I do love the jazz.
& finally, how does one add those footers?
I'm sure a few did. However, they turned out near-perfect symphonies, concertos, sonatas, etc. They didn't walk up to a microphone after shooting up heroin or snorting coke, and yell into it.
Those that lasted the test of time, you mean. ;) I'm sure there were plenty of degenerate composers that are forgotten about, and that's probably for the best.
Just as there will be thousands of forgotten rock musicians, because they sucked....that doesn't mean *all* of them do, though.

Death (The first ever "death metal" band, and a very progressive metal band. Best musicianship I've ever heard out of a metal band in my life. Too bad that they're gone now :(. RIP Chuck Schnuldier)
Steve DiGiorgio is a constant inspiration to me as a bassist.
But yeah, my favourite bands as such, rather than my most inspirational artists are:
Killswitch Engage, John Butler Trio, Lamb Of God, The Beautiful Girls, The Mars Volta, The Black Dahlia Murder, System Of A Down, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Parkway Drive, Trivium, The White Stripes, John Lee Hooker, The Black Keys, Slayer, Poison The Well, Nile, Ben Harper, Clutch, Bob Dylan, Spiderbait, Sakkuth, The Beatles (John Lennon's solo work is my favourite though), The Rolling Stones (earlier stuff), Rage Against The Machine, Queens Of The Stone Age, Unearth, Xavier Rudd, Devendra Banhart, and the majority of the local bands here no one has ever heard of in their entire life.
As you can see, I've got fairly diverse tastes.

Quite progressive/power metal oriented, as you can see. I also very much like classical music, but I rarely listen to it, because I play enough of it on the viola already! :) I do have a special place in my heart for Gustav Holst's The Planets, though.

I know this isn't the point, but hip-hop sucks. The fact that 'rap' rhymes with 'crap' points to a random sense of justice embedded in this hellish language of ours.
If (most of) the classical composers weren't already dead, I think they would have a collective heart attack & die when they heard some of what passes for music these days. (Or they'd go on a shooting rampage.:mp5: I'd join them.)
Feel free to call me childish names & argue vehemently in support of your quasi-musical noises. I'll be sure not to care.

It's not reallly fair to dismiss an entire genre and anyone could very easily dismiss classical as a load of over complicated rubbish played by and listened to by wankers who enjoy sitting around and stroking their beards, real or stuck on. As for calling you childish names i will you smelly bum face
As for favourite bands I'm gonna have to go with-
Motorhead-for plain hard rocking no one does it better
Minor Theat-hardcore pioneers and just all round class
Big Black-for making some of the nastiest yet most enjoyable music of all time
NomeansNo-pure experimentation and cos their the hanson brothers (not the long haired girl-boys)
Discharge-heavy as fuck punk that even metallers like
Blind Guardian - Imo the best metal band to walk this earth. They started out as Helloween style speed metal, but evolved to a more complex and bombastic form of power metal over the years. They really have some amazing songs.
Best album: Nightfall in Middle Earth. If you're a Tolkien fan you really should listen to this at least once.
Random fact: With the departure of their drummer earlier this year, BG had their first line-up change since their forming in 1985.
Savatage - a very close runner-up for the title best metal band in the world. They evolved from a 80's American heavy metal band to one of the best symphonic/progressive metal/rock bands in the world.
Best album: Edge of Thorns. A milestone in the bands history for 2 reasons. It is the first album with another singer than Jon Oliva (he stays in the band as song writer and piano/keyboard player), who everyone assumed was irreplaceable. Although very different from Oliva's raw voice, Zak Stevens' voice fits the music perfectly. But even more important than the change in vocalist is that this is the last album featuring master guitarist Criss Oliva (imo one of the best guitar players ever) who was killed by a drunk driver in a hit and run a few months after the release of the album.

I saw Khanate the other day with one of the Sunn 0))) guitarists playing for them just the other day. My $.02
The Beatles: The single best band of all time, every album was good, though I could have done without the sone The Long and Winding Road.
Parliament: George Clinton is the funkiest man alive, then you add the second and third most funkey men, namely Bootsy Collins, and Maceo Parker, and you have a recipe for the P-Funk, uncut funk, THE BOMB...
Elvis Costello: One of the most talented solos out there, a constant source of intelligent, and soulful music.
Tom Waits: Another extreamly talented solo. Some of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard, and he was at at least .10 BAL while making it...
Warren Zevon: May he rest in peace. No list is complete without the guy who wrote Werewolves of London.
The Band: The weight, and that's all there is to say.
Pink Floyd: Making sadness and madness rock for more than 25 years.
The Cherry Poppin' Daddys: For making me understand that horns CAN rock.
Janis Joplin: THE woman of rock. No one else can compare. She could even make a Kris Kristofferson song cool.
There are many more, but those are at the top for me.

Nightwish. The ultimate combination of symphonic metal and beautiful vocals.
Rhapsody. More symphonic metal with a fantasy story-telling background.
Therion. Even more symphonic metal, though of the darker sort.
Gackt. Upbeat J-rock.
Enigma. Alternative and unusual with a rather mellow sound.
Blackmore's Night. Great folk music.
Simon and Garfunkel. No description necessary.

I can tolerate Blink's early stuff, but songs like "All the small things", and the immature humour (it's not so much that it's immature, more unfunny, actually) really annoys me.
As for Finch, it's more a "don't like" rather than any real emnity.

My nation name should give you enough of a clue as to which is my favorite band.
Here's some more:
The Beatles
Rush
Guided by Voices
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Alice in Chains
Stone Temple Pilots
Guns 'n' Roses
Hüsker Dü
Black Sabbath

Awesome!!! :D Really similar to what I like. (Nirvana is also my favourite band, and I like pretty much everything you listed)
I can tolerate Blink's early stuff, but songs like "All the small things", and the immature humour (it's not so much that it's immature, more unfunny, actually) really annoys me.
As for Finch, it's more a "don't like" rather than any real emnity.
It's mostly the Blink stuff off "Take off Your Pants and Jacket" that I like. Unashamedly cheesy, happy and fun. Even when it pretends to be serious. The rest is more than a bit shit.

Well, okay. Of course, I won't hold it against you. :p :D The only album of theirs that I can stand is "Dude Ranch".
For happy, fun music, I go for the B-52's. :p

Discharge-heavy as fuck punk that even metallers like
1. Classical is not a genre--it's a collection of them. It's just that nobody these days pays enough attention to tell them apart. (Man do I like to get technical.)
2. Genre of what? It's not fair to the rest of music to include rap under that designation. It might pass for some sort of oral literature, but that's being generous. You do get points for trying to be open-minded--perhaps you are a better person than I am. However, I stick by my rampage comment. :mp5:*mixture of gunfire & maniacal laughter* Come on, how do think they were gonna die anyway?
3. I'm not much into the REALLY heavy stuff, but that at least I can respect. I have no beef with you, sir. (I assume you are a sir based solely on your name.)
& in response to Jello Biafra, you're damn right you smell pretentiousness. In the words of Denis Leary, I'm an asshole, & I'm proud of it.
