Oral sex gives you cancer

Oral sex linked to cancer - Swedish study (http://www.thelocal.se/article.php?ID=2509&date=20051116&PHPSESSID=d26a999654342cf994d47dcaba97fdc5)

Avoid oral sex. That's the advice from dentist Kerstin Rosenquist after a new Swedish study confirmed that the Papilloma Virus increases the risk of oral cancer. The virus has previously been linked with cancer of the uterus.

The risk of getting cancer of the mouth after oral sex is small. But for those whose mouths are infected by a special form of the virus, known as a high risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), there is an increased risk.

Kerstin Rosenquist compared 132 cancer patients in the south of Sweden with a control group of 320 healthy individuals. In the cancer group, 36% carried the high risk HPV, compared to just 1% in the control group.

The result is in line with earlier studies. Last year French researchers reported that patients with oral cancer who were infected with the virus had had three times more oral sex than who did not carry the virus.

Oral cancer is most common among older middle-aged men.

"But in recent years the disease has increased among young people and we don't know why," said Kerstin Rosenquist to TT.

"We can speculate over whether the virus is one of the factors."

Smoking and high alcohol consumption have long been considered the most significant risk factors, but there is no proven link with the kind of snus used in Sweden.

As well as avoiding oral sex, Kerstin Rosenquist advised people to visit the dentist regularly, since the first symptoms can be hard to spot. Early diagnosis is important if the cancer is to be prevented from spreading to nearby lymph glands.

Other risk factors are poor oral hygiene and missing teeth.

Great, just great. I don't know about you guys, but I think this is a risk I'm going to have to accept, well, at least until the HPV vaccines hit the market. No way in hell am I giving up blowjobs because of this, but I feel sorry for straight guys whose girlfriends and wives get spooked by this. ;)

Umm... so don't give blowjobs to people with herpes. Fine by me, I won't go near someone with herpes in a sexual situation in the first place.

The vast majority of people carry HPV and experience no symptoms and have no idea they are carrying it.

What is the difference between the "high risk HPV" and the normal HPV?

Do you have three hours for a lecture on viral molecular biology, oncogenes and cell cycle regulation? ;)

Anyway, this is quite condensed and good. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_papillomavirus#Cancer)

I get that every day at work. And I'm not even a scientist.

It is estimated that 80% of sexually active adults have been infected with one or more genital HPV strains at some time.[1] The vast majority of infected people suffer no ill effects and never even know that they have been infected, but may be able to infect others. The immune system typically clears the virus from the body within a year, after which the person will be immune to that particular HPV strain.[2]

HPV is an almost unavoidable and invisible consequence of sexual activity, and also of most nonsexual activity, for this reason many health authorities recommend that women have an annual pap smear following their first sexual activity, to ensure early detection of cervical cancer.

Just have to avoid the handful of strains that are "high risk".

The problem is, most people aren't carrying around a genetic lab, so you'll never know...

I thought that genital warts were herpes...

You are mistaken. Genital herpes is most often caused by the Herpes Simplex type 2 virus and manifests as genital sores.

In either case, if someone has an STD, they get no lovin' from me.

Yeah, because STDs are visible and people who get them know that the person they have sex with is infected.

Ah, ok, I was mistaken then. This HPV one isn't like herpes though, it goes away correct? In which case, I suppose it's not nearly as bad.

Herpes though, is something I would not go near with a 10 foot pole.

It might go away. It might not. And it might give you warts. And it might give you cancer. So, yeah...

What doesn't cause cancer? If we start giving up things that may increase the risk of us developing cancer, then we may as well stop using Jolt. Because that's a tumour and a half right there!
