It seems some folks expect a bunch of WWII era shells and bombs to start washing up on the Jersey shore soon. I'd like one as a souvenier.

Unexploded ordnance has a habit of exploding, even if it's decades old and rusting underwater.

I would think especially if it's decades old and rusting under water. I know for a fact that the homemade blasting caps I have a recipie for get more and more unstable as time goes on.

Meanwhile, be careful what you pick up on the beach.

Please do be careful.

How long before they start showing up on the shores of Lake Michigan?

I wanna get me a high explosive!

I don't recommend homemade stuff, either.

Heck, when I was in the Army, I didn't like crimping the military blasting caps - that was scary enough even with a crimping tool.

I always had the feeling that one day, I would get a badly made one, and....

*poof*

there go my fingers...

There was an article in Weird NJ a couple of years back about an atomic bomb that was jetisoned by an airplane just off the jersey shore. It seems the airplane was having some engine trouble and needed to lighten the load by dumping the bomb, or crash with a nuclear weapon on board.

I don't sit around making the stuff. The books are just to satisfy my curiosity. I've worked around blasting caps and dynamite before when I was building pools and I always showed a healthy respect. A blasting cap is not a toy.

No, those things are made to take a beating and not go off. In fact, even if the high explosive inside explode they probably would only scatter radioactive material around.

Yes, but if odors are a competition, Jersey has lost. Ever been to Gary Indiana? Its like someone decided to build steel mills and rendering plants on a massive pile of medical waste...

New Jersey is the only place in the world where the devil has decided to take up residence. We're the hellmouth!

Bah! If you think those explosives are scary, then take a look at this:

http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6280

So not only did the Americans join the war late, but they left behind a 1400 tonne bomb to blow up Sheerness.

I can picture my 7 yr old dragging a shell out of the surf at Point Pleasant Beach. He's already smuggled crab claws into the car, only to forget them when we get out. They always have a little ripe meat left in them too.

We've looked at several homes in Bushkill,Pa. A lot more house for a lot less $$.
I like it here too much, though. Its going to be tough to make a decision. We are putting our house on the market in the next month, after I get some more projects done. I'm going to ask twice what we paid for it 4 yrs ago and I dont plan to move off of that amount too much.

I'm not stupid. I'll stand back and shoot at it first to see if it's unstable!
