Out of pure boredom (and much listening to Body of Song), I decided to make this thread. The premise is simple: Vote for your favorite of the two.

Two homosexual new wave musicians and 80s throwbacks.

Well, Mike's bisexual.

Bonus points: Grant Hart is bisexual, but is largely (and wrongfully) though to just be homosexual.

I only know Stipe so I voted for him

So you're happy enough with the '80s throwbacks' descriptor?

Bob Mould was in Husker Du therefore is granted genius status.

Michael Stipe is in REM and is therefore a self-righteous wanker.

Guess who i voted for ?? :D

Bob Mould wasn't the talent in Husker Du, though: that was Grant Hart.

This is a hard one, so hard in fact that I almost didn't vote. One could make the argument that REM's music is more listenable, however, that's due to the band as a whole, not just Stipe. While Stipe is the better singer of the two, Mould, I think, is a much better songwriter. Added to that, Mould can play an instrument, while, to the best of my knowledge, Stipe can't. Also, while Mould's voice isn't as beautiful as Stipe's, he is much better at conveying anger. So I guess Mould, but just barely

Bah...Bob wrote the songs and the lyrics...Hart came up with the rythms. Granted you can't have one without the other...but Bob Mould had Sugar...and Grant Hart had...hmmm...

Hold that thought on Stipe being the "better" singer --- Listen to Bob's solo stuff. A lot of it sounds eerily like Stipe, but fuller and more powerful, especially on "Missing You", from his latest album.

Bob does have a weird upstate New York accent, though.

Wrong. Pretty much whichever of the two wrote the song sang it. I do have to say I like Mould's tunes over Hart's, and I just brought Husker Du back into a tie here.

Yeah, they were pretty much tied as far as songwriting went.

But this isn't about Husker Du and R.E.M., people. It's about Mould and Stipe!

Nova Mob and the Last Days Of Pompeii space-jazz rock-opera LP. You can keep your Sugar, thank you.

I agree, Sugar sound just like a million other alternative rock bands. I don't think they're anything special.

Yeah, though they did have some songs that weren't Poppy.

Sugar was like a stopgap between the Husker Du years and Bob's serious (and far superior) solo work.

And really, I thought Stipe would be lightyears ahead of Mould in the poll by now. I thought wrong. :p

I do have to say I like Mould's tunes over Hart's, Really? I'd say that I liked Hart's tunes over Mould's. Which is part of the reason I voted for Stipe. (And brought Stipe into the lead again.)

Have you heard Grant's untitled piano song (sometimes known as "Granted") on the Complete Zen Arcade Outtakes? It's good stuff.

No, can't say that I have. Is that only available on bootleg, or could I order it from somewhere? Or did they just rerelease the album with the outtakes on it?

It's just a bootleg, but it's a really good one. 40+ outtakes. I got it off SoulSeek.
