This is your chance to tell use why we should join you in boycotting a certain company or product. If there is a larger movement to boycott the company or product, feel free to provide a link.

Here's my contribution:
Royal Dutch/Shell Group (the oil giant): For their contribution to the devastation of the Niger delta and their actions to suppress the voices of the oppressed peoples of that region. For their critical role in the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other peaceful protesters and their active support of a brutal military regime.

All I know for sure is that I had to wait until I was in my late twenties before I could eat a Granny Smith apple and feel good about it.

I'm still iffy on Nestle products, but they seem to have made a concerted effort to buy out and manufacture every single one of my favourite candy and ice cream treats.

damn straight, if you dont show that you dont liek teh way they do things, this is one of the best ways short of getting into government which not all of us can do, consumers who buy products tested on animals etc are essentially doing the testign themselves because they fuel the market

hit them in teh only place it counts in this screwed up world of ours, the wallet

nestle also gave a huge amount of baby formula to the 3rd world countries getting them to use it, but because the mother stopped producing their milk when the free stuff ran out they had to buy it, and it cost more than they could afford

nestle made a shite load of cash and many many babies died in the process

Thank you for this thread LazyHippies, how about the real democratic nations of the world and its citizens supporting a boycot embargo of Cuba for its role in the execution and harrassment of political dissidents and maintaining a dictatorship government for close to 46 years now and counting until that dictatorship government falls from withinn.

Yeah I know, and then there were people who'd dilute the formula with non-potable water and it was really really bad. Then they claimed they'd changed their ways and things seemed alright and then they were caught up to their old tricks again.

Thing is, I don't know how things currently stand, and since they seem to have bought out Rowntree chocolates and PopSicle, I'm feeling kinda fucked.

Sony's new DRM stuff for their cds is absolutely despicable, enough for me to boycott them. It's fueled a virus cloaking problem, it messes royally with your CD drive if you try to remove it without going onto their website, and their removal solution leaves a hole in your security that allows anyone with the knowledge to mess with your computer. You can't even choose how to rip the music onto your PC from the cd; it only rips as protected 128kbps WMA files and it limits the number of copies of the cd that you can make to 3. They have put software on a lot of people's pcs that goes beyond the right that companies have to protect their copyrighted material. For this, I have signed the boycott online of Sony products at http://www.petitiononline.com/bcsony/petition.html

But how do you boycott a government? The only way is to boycott goods from that country, but then the people you are really hurting are the citizens of that country. I dont think a boycott against a government works. Boycotts are designed to hurt industries whose primary motive is making money. The people who suffer if you boycott a countrie's goods will always be the citizens, not the rulers.

I just signed that petition (whether it does any good or not is irrelevant, its the thought that counts). I hate DRM as a principal. It makes things unnecessarily harder. But sony took that to whole new level.

The Cuban people are suffering a dictatorship government of 46 years, a boycott embargo by the democratic nation governments on which it depends
would bring down that government from withinn.

Cuba needs trade, Euros or Dollars hard currency to survive as a government,
Cuba is also an island nation, I advocate a naval blocade nothing goes in nothing goes out until it falls from withinn, then let Cuban Americans organize a flotilla of boats to visit their relatives with aid many of whom are receiving
phone calls, letters, Dollars or Euros from Cuban Americans, before any American sets foot on Cuba.

What is a short time compared to over 46 years of dictatorship.

If Saddam Hussein nation of Iraq had not been invaded it would still have
dictator Saddam Hussein for life, so President Clinton is right when at least he says is a good thing Saddam Hussein is gone, like I said he should say the same thing about Dictator for life Fidel Castro of Cuba.

I boycott Google. Someone has to. People trust the company as though it was still a couple of college students working on it from their bedroom, but it's a company just as sprawling and corrupt as Microsoft now. Take their web accelerator, for instance. The security risk posed by that is unmatched, and if Microsoft had ever even thought of developing one then people would have screamed for their blood. Google gets away with it fine. Google is going to get away with a lot of things fine if people continue to trust everything they do.

There's one rule in life. Don't trust a corporation. They only want money, nothing more.

I'm boycotting Walmart because of the way it treats female workers and because I refuse to give my money to a bunch of Christian Conservatives. As of right now I only buy one thing from Walmart (ammunition), and thats only because they sell it for less than they pay for it in order to get you through the door.

Right now I'm boycotting Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola. Wal-mart is being boycotted for their systematic mistreatment of women and their chronic underpaying of workers. Coca-Cola is being boycotted because 1) every time one of their bottlers in South America unionizes, they (or their bottlers, and they do not particularly care if their bottlers do this) find it cheaper to hire a paramilitary group to kill the union leaders than to pay them a cent or two more per hour, and 2) because they refused a judge's decis that ruled that they were in fact liable. To my knowledge, the Bush administration has not pressed the matter.

Hmm, a question about your boycott. Are you only boycotting RIAA affiliated recording lables and the bands on them or are you boycotting everyone because the big boys acted like jerks? There is pleanty of great music produced by bands that are not on RIAA labels, especially if you like interesting or out of the mainstream music. Looking at the few dozen CDs I've bought in the past year, I'd say only about 10% or so came from RIAA label bands. Granted, I'm a fan of metal and alot of those bands aren't big enough to attract a major label (especially the European ones), but if you like anything outside of easy listening ot pop, you have alot of genre-specific options out there.

Now, if you're boycotting concerts, you're being a jerk. I'm not sure how much you know about the music industry, but labels make next to nothing from concerts. There are three reasons for concerts. One is to promote the band and their CDs (if you like them, maybe you'll go out and by their stuff). The second reason is because many bands actually like to go out and play live, giving a little something to the fans, its like a thankyou. The final reason bands tour, is to make money. Not for the label, but for them. A band gets only a tiny portion of every record you buy(generally somewhere in the neighborhood of a third of the wholesale price, minus production costs), so they need to play shows to make money to eat. A band gets to keep almost all of the money they make from a concert after paying the location, their manager, and their staff.

This is true. It would be one thing to boycott the concerts of bands that you dislike BECAUSE they support the RIAA's actions, but boycotting shows because you dislike the RIAA's actions does nothing, because the record companies make hardly a dime on concerts. It just hurts the artists, which makes them more desperate for the record company's assistance, allowing the record companies to screw artists even more.
