Still Considering Purchasing Sony Products? (http://www.security.ithub.com/article/Sonys+DRM+It+Just+Keeps+Getting+Worse/165201_1.aspx?kc=ewnws111505dtx1k0000599)

(Slightly off topic I know, but I haven't found this information anywhere else)

How long has Sony been doing this, and was it only done to music CDs or to software CDs too?

Though.... Yeah....

Sony, bastards.

Good. Massive lawsuits will make other companies think twice before installing spyware onto my machine.

Not sure how long they have done this, but read to the bottom. Software is affected, too. So are Macs.

Yeah, sorry about that, posted before I finished reading the whole article.

Oh, that playstation lock-down thing is pretty scary too. Until a hacker rips it apart about a month after release that is.

Why do games designers not get it? Copy protection does not work. For every programmer employed to create this software there's ten equally skilled ones working against it. For free.

Someone in the Netherlands did a decompile on the XCP rootkit that has gotten most of the attention lately. It seems that parts of the rootkit use the LAME mp3 encoder, which is licensed under the Lesser GPL. That means by delivering only an executable (the rootkit) without source or crediting, XCP violates the GPL Violating the GPL puts Sony at massive legal risk for—wait for it—copyright infringement.

The irony is just crushing.

:D

Yeah I recently heard what they might do to our PS3's.

I mean, do they NOT understand the whole market in video game rentals that they'll lose out to the 360?

If they don't stop they'll screw us all.

And I don't ever buy CDs anyway, so I don't care about what they do there.

But as long as this doesn't effect my PSP...Which it probably will.

Don't worry about it. The hackers in the community are bound to come up with the solution soon. Remember the program that validated the Windows software? Hackers had a solution within 24 hours. It was a simple copy and paste and that was it. Sometimes I love hackers.

Or steam, which took five weeks. Every time one of of these new "unbeatable" systems come out, they're always dead in three months. And games companies keep on buying them like candy. Odd.

Idle speculation, but given how Japanese culture isn't nearly as sue happy as American culture, I wonder if this is the end for the American company president of Sony?

What exactly are they doing to PS3s?

Exact same thing. A PS3 game can only be played on one PS3 ever.

So you break your PS3 and buy a new one you have to buy all the games again?

Or you share a flat with somebody, both of you own PS3s, and you buy a game between you...only one person can use their game on their machine?

Or even better: your PS3 breaks while under warranty, and Sony gives you a replacement. They give you new copies of all the games?

What the fuck are Sony playing at?

What the fuck are Sony playing at?Microsoft is doing the same thing with Windows... You Windows CD is not to be used in other PC...and they have multiple spy programs enbeded in the programs...and the report you to Microsoft corp.

Microsoft has been doing this well before Sony.

Indeed. But that's a one-off thing, and crackable at that. Every single game you buy is a different kettle of fish.

No, that seems unlikely. I doubt that Sony would spring for the extra expense for a barcode writer on the PS3 to brand all the DVDs on each and every machine. What is more likely is that every DVD will come with a unique ID telling of the game type and serial number that the PS3 will lock down into its onboard memory. After that, any game bearing the same type ID but different serial number will be rejected.

That seems to be the more likely case.

And easily defeated if they use conventional storage systems for this.

..and yes...they all are defeated...(resistance is futile--Warez Borg)

Thats why this XBOX company (Microsoft) statement...is meaningless
