Hiddink hoping for little miracle

Socceroos coach Guus Hiddink admits he is looking for a little miracle ahead of his team's crucial World Cup qualifying play-off against the fifth place South American team next month.

Hiddink was speaking after watching a highly impressive performance from the Socceroos as they brushed aside Jamaica 5-0 with goals from Marco Bresciano, Archie Thompson, Mark Viduka, John Aloisi and Joel Griffiths.

But tougher tests lie ahead as Australia will play either Uruguay, Colombia or Chile in a two-legged qualifier in November to decide who goes to the World Cup in Germany next year.

Yup, as I said in the other threads, they deserve it i feel. Was a cracking game though, the ref did ok and didn't spoil it by sending anyone off, and to be fair, both sides could have gone a man down if they had had a different ref.

Still, they're back! :D Just wait til we batter you in the group stages hopefully!!! Get our own back for that friendly a few years ago...

I think it should only be used for a few things, tackles not being one of them. It would slow the game down too much. But for goal line decisions, i think it is a must, as the game could rely on that one decision.

Still, FIFA (oh bugger ;) ) are looking into it and, god forbid, might do something useful for once, rather than fucking about with the offside rule, which is now useless...

Well if they reverted to 'If a player is off-side (i.e. behind the last defender), he is offside, no matter where he is on the pitch" i might change my tune a little...but the video goal line stuff might help. They do it in ice hockey and rugby for crying out loud...

about the offside...they could use a video replay too...if its close they just let it go...and if there is a score they check the replay for the possible offside.

it would actually help the fluidity of the game...because they would not stop the ball every time they think its an offside.

We'll still kick your ass at proper footy, most of us are still learning how to play soccer. It aint a popular game here, compared to pretty much everywhere else.

On topic: Australia deserve it. The game was absolutely AWESOME. The crowd was great; the atmosphere was unbelievable. I was so happy when Aloisi hammered that ball in. I reckon, providing a few things go our way, Australia can knock off some classy sides.

I'm a little bit disappointed, all the credit is going to Aloisi, and while yes it was a good kick under huge pressure, 3 other aussies kicked into the net but it was Schwarzward who won the game for us

Indeed, the crowd helped the Aussie team well, with the crowd they seemed a lot more purposeful with the ball, although other factors such as time difference and Australia's emphasis on recovery after the first leg also helped here. All round, a very resourceful and intelligent approach from Australia means they fully deserve to be in the World Cup.

Yeah, I think the management & team handled it all much better than four years ago & it shows in the result this time around.
