Now the full line up for Germany 2006 has been finalised, who do people think are likely to be contenders, winners, and who do we want to see our respective nations play?

I want to see England, Australia and USA in the same group.

Watch out for the dark horses Angola.

I actually do too, if possible with a joke team like Ghana or the Ivory Coast for comedy purposes.

USA 7th in the world? They couldn't beat scotland ffs:eek:

I'd like to see us play the Poms, but to be honest I'm not too fussed. I'm just happy to see us in the finals again, after 30 odd years in the wilderness.

Dont right off Ivory Cost, they drew with Italy tonight 1-1 and they have Chelsea player Drogba who scored a cracker against the Italians!

The Ukraine could be good too...Schevchenko's first major finals and i think he'll want to show the world how good he is, as long as he gets the service.

But as for contenders:

Brazil, Argentina, England, Germany (home soil nearly always gives the team a boost, at least til the semis...)

Also possibly France, Holland, Italy, USA and Mexico.

Never discount the African sides either, they usually produce a shock, like Senegal and Cameroon have done previously, although neither got in this time.

Winners:

Most likely Brazil, but any of those mentioned above could do it.

As for who I want England to play...we can be out of the 'Group of Death' this time...but Australia, USA and maybe Japan...

Oh and congrats to the Aussies, real glad you made it, you deserve your place.

The FIFA rankings are only based on numbers of wins, not on the quality of the teams they play against when they do win.

And England lost to Northern Ireland, so World Rankings are to be looked at skeptically... apart from No.1 being Brazil ;)

Too true...if Blatter gets in again, i fear/hope the whole organisation will go bust as football leagues/clubs/regions will go their own way...

Too true...if Blatter gets in again, i fear/hope the whole organisation will go bust ......Peoples love football too much to let the WorldCup go bust...

the problem with FIFA is that they are difficult to replace without major chaos.

England 9th in the world? They couldn't beat Northern Ireland FFS!

Portugal 9th in the world? They couldn't beat Northern Ireland FFS!

Northern Ireland are 104th in the world, by the way.

;)

FIFA rankings mean pretty much nothing.

Hence the fear...they mess with the rules, but do the World cup, they are like the devil and jesus combined into one...

But with stuff like the World Club Championship (otherwise known as the 'Lets make a shit load of cash Cup") and the Confederations cup, which although I enjoy watching, really is pointless, the usefulness of FIFA might be coming to an end.

All three of my home teams are in the World Cup...

Australia has Hiddink, and everyone remembers 2002 and South Korea...

Poland have recently belted Ecuador and Estonia...

And Spain have Raul of Real Madrid fame!!!

Go all three of them!!! Here's hoping they don't all get drawn in the same group... :p

Maybe Iran and the US will be in the same group, as in '98. That would be... amusing. :D

In addition to my home teams (France & England), I'll be supporting the underdogs, such as Angola, Togo, Trinidad & Tobago...

Are you sure you want England to play anyone from 'oooga booga land' (as you describe it) ?

GROUP D

I like the look of Group D. I reckon we could win a game or so there. Maybe even sneak into the next round if we played really well. :)

Dont be so harsh you should top that group with way more wins than loses.

Hehe, yes. The luck of the draw is with you. A shame it's not the real draw. ;)

Well, it happened in 1998, and, as I recall, the players offered one another flowers or something at the beginning of the match.

But tensions have... risen somewhat since then. ;)

That's what I think would happen.
I don't think there are going to be any surprises - Brazil, Argentina, England, France, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain and Sweden will all qualify for the last 16, plus a couple of African teams (most likely Tunisia and the Ivory Coast), Japan, Korea, Australia, Mexico, and maybe the USA. Of course that depends on the groups...

By the way - anyone else worked out how many UK-based players will be at the World Cup. Excluding the English team, it's around 85, so about 105 with the English team. There are 32 countries, each with a squad of 23 players. That makes 736 players. UK-based players make up about 15% of the players there.
