Ants eat away patient’s eye in Indian hospital
Nurses ignored cries of pain, saying it was normal after operation

Updated: 10:37 a.m. ET Nov. 15, 2005
KOLKATA, India - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient’s family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

Authorities of the Sambhunath Hospital in Kolkata said they were probing the incident.

“It’s not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident,” hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.

Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India’s overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people.

Why cheap? It could be the next Hollywood blockbuster.

Julia Roberts could play the brave heroine recovering in the hospital.
Rachel Weiss could be the evil nurse who ignored her pain.
Brad Pitt could be brave journalist, who through a combination of bravery and subterfuge managed to brake the story and have the lead get a new eye.
Shawn Wayans can be his wise cracking comedy side kick who will die about halfway through, and who's death will spur the brave hero to get the story published.

Ooh, and Alan Rickman could be the ant.

It's dynamite baby, I tell ya.

They should have had the staple of 19th century hospital beds: water pans ender the bed posts to stop ants dead in their tracks!
of course... malaria mosquitoes had a nasty habit of breeding int he standing water but... NO ANTS!

Sure, they've been changing names all around India recently, starting with Bombay.. there's really no reason for it.

This may sound a bit off topic, but I think the point is valid.
Did anyone else notice the bold part of the article?
Makes me happy that we have our healthcare based in the free market, where they actually have to compete, and when I say compete, I , of course, mean keeping rats, cats, dogs, and ants OUTSIDE of the hospital.

My theory is now confirmed. The ants are indeed rising against humans and it is happening right before our very eyes. (I will hold off on the incredibly bad pun that that invites).

Exactly. We must breed with the ants, learn their ways, and rise up against them from the inside...a priceless strategy.

no, simply refuting the blanket insinuation that state-run hospitals are filled with vermin and capitalist hospitals provide the best health care.

Anybody have a clue why Diabetic patients make such a tasty snack? Call me dumb, but does it have to do with blood sugar levels perhaps?
