I'm currently reading Imperial Grunts: The American Military on the Ground, by Robert D. Kaplan. So far, I really like the book. It covers in great detail the experiences and initiatives of American military personnel all over the globe. Mr. Kaplan has visited dozens of small countries and cultural backwaters to compile this volume, and places the new "warrior/diplomats" in the context of the cultures where they serve.

"The World is Flat" Thomas Friedman

How business is changing and how the world is changing. What world competition is doing to the "first" and "third" worlds.

"Freakonomics" Levin?

Statistics and economics applied to the problems of the world. Even though that sounds "heavy" it's really a short easy read.
