Mexico vs. Venezuela

A comment by Hugo Chavez has angered Vincente Fox. It's resulted in ambasadors being called back and diplomatic ties being interrupted. Seems like an overreaction to me, but you guys decide. All this happened because Chavez said something along the lines of "Don't mess with me or you'll get stung".

Well, that would be an interesting war....too bad it would be awfully close to me. Would depress the world oil and natural gas market again, BUT, would probably cut down on illegal immigration, as the Mexican Army would need new recruits.
I have no liking for Chavez, but his military is a little better trained and organized, I believe.

It's interesting this is getting so much air-time...Chile and Peru are teetering on the brink of an actual war, and I haven't heard a peep in the Canadian or US media. Peru has suddenly decided to pass a law saying that a particular area of coastal waters belongs to it, and not to Chile, and Chile is buying up weapons like they're going out of style. Neither side seems likely to back down right now, and Argentina has already stated it would support Peru...Brazil would support Chile, and basically, all hell would break loose in South America. Is it too far away to be newsworthy?

Really? All I've heard about Chile and Peru is that the former president of Peru, who's wanted on corruption charges, is being held in Chile. Not one peep about a war brewing. A major war in South America should be front page news.

I did find something in English about this: Chile Peru Rivalry (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051109/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/peru_chile_fujimori_1)

Reading this, it just sounds like a lot of stuff adding up to a bit of tension, but Chile has been buying up helicopters, submarines, and arms, and is calling up its reserve troops and placing them right at the border with Peru. All it's going to take is some idiot to light this bomb. Plus, Peruvians living in Chile, and Chileans living in Peru are starting to be harrassed...and some are fleeing because the tension is getting to be so bad. This goes back to the War of the Pacific, but it's become especially bad these past few months. The Chilean media is waving the flag, and making all sorts of proclamations, and people are getting really fired up for a conflict. My husband's family is pretty worried...they know they're just hearing the Chilean version of events, but this level of nationalism is worse than anything they've ever seen.

Could you perhaps provide a link for this? I haven't heard one word, which is...odd.

If I had been Vincente Fox, and had heard Chavez say that, I would have waved my hand in the air, and smiled at the reporters, and said, "Don't mind him - he has Tourette's"

Chile and Peru aren't <cough>"Commie Oil Producers". They're not part of NAFTA either. Both Mexico and Venezuela are considered far more "newsworthy" than either Chile or Peru, even if their dispute turns into full-fledged war.

Actually, we have a free trade agreement with Chile. This would affect the United States as well.

Well, one also needs to understand the defence agreements between various Latin American countries. As I mentioned, Brazil has indicated that it would support Chile against Peru, but possibly Argentina and certainly Bolivia would support Peru against Chile. That would not be the end of it though. The other South American nations have various bilateral and multilateral defense agreements that would likely draw them in as well...and I really can't see the US standing by while the entire South American continent explodes into conflict. (or Canada for that matter...)

I agree. I think we'll try to play the peacekeeper. Now if a war does blow up? Will it have UN Permission or will it be unilateral? :D

No, we'll sell weapons and provide training to one side.

And no, the UN doesn't give you permission for this sort of thing. I'm sure they'll just start on their own.

If this threatened to go beyond a conflict between two nations, I don't think the UN would have a choice but to intervene.

Then again, this is all supposition. The sabre-rattling going on is very political in motivation. For all we know, this postering is serving BOTH country's politicans well, and will never escalate.

Or it could be real and they could go at one another. Either way, South America will be screwed and I doubt the UN will be able to do anything to stop it.
