That was just an idea to appease all the sarcastic, opt for the worst possible idea people whom I love dearly.

You don't need to buy Euchre. It comes pepackaged in a deck of cards. Available for as little as 1.00 + tax at the local dollar store, if by some horrible twist of fate you don't already have a deck.

Risk or Munchkin are good, because they are the sort of back-stabbing fun that childhood should teach you about. Risk is slightly better, because it also teaches your children about Geography and battle strategy. For instance, did you know that the US is really only made of two states? An eastern half and a western half, all the stuff that they told you about American geography at school was a lie. Also, it is physically impossible for more than one group of people to exist on Greenland at a time, once cannot travel from Australia to the US without first walking through Siam, and Antartica is a filthy lie spread by the Liberal Jew Republican controlled media.

I voted "other", because you need to get Axis and Allies, the best board game, ever. Well, as long as you aren't stuck playing Russia it rocks. Although you will probably have to get it on ebay since it isn't made anymore. If that is too complex though, I would go with Risk.

Yeah, well that horrible twist of fate is my kid. I can't keep a deck of cards to save my soul... hmmm that's probably beyond saving anyway.

Well, so far Risk is in the lead so that may be the one I get next. I'll give this poll a day or two before I decide, but thanks for all the great suggestions everyone! There are definately some games I never heard of, like the Apples to Apples and I'll definitely have to look for that one.

Apples to Apples. Many a good time has been started or continued with a game of A to A with my friends or family.

With family, we play this ones:
Carcassonne (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/822)
Ticket to Ride Europe (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/14996)

With friends, it's more:
Twiligth Imperium 3 (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/12493)
Puerto Rico (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/3076)
Fische Fluppen Frikadellen (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/4370)

Of course, you know that 1000s of games have been created since Risk and Monoploy, don't you?
And for the most part, they are just better than these 2 ones.

A man (?) after my own mold.

Grainne Ni Malley, I'm serious. We had a weekly family game night when I was growing up, and the monthly penny ante poker was a blast.

Risk is a great game, but my favourite boardgame is Balderdash. I suppose you'd have to have some pretty aware kids though :p

I also agree with Rolatia and Daistallia that poker really is a great game for all. Seriously!

Poker's fun, but then again I live in Reno and the casinos (ugh) kind of wore me out on poker. Again, it is cheap enough to get a deck of cards. Thanks for the idea!

Risk is great game, especially as you can teah your kids the ability to smash the opressive imperialist in the west and the turn the world a nice shade of Purple.

MWUHUHUhahaha
Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the stength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!.

ok ok has a cup of tea and a Biscuit and calms down..

A pack of cards has multiple possibilities such as explaining you can play solitaire on the move without a laptop..

another firm favourite of my familys has been the ever classic "You Wash You Dry and You put away" a game of home domesticity for ages 4 to adult.

Plus you have a great Lyric in your sig took me a while to remember where I heard it but now it's bouncing around my head like a bumble-bee in a tent.

Risk and most of it's incarnations are good. I like Risk 2210AD the best.
I hate Cranium it sucks.
Also Axis and Allies is good but i wouldn't play it with anyone under the age of 14 or so.

There's a risk-type game called Civilisation. It's pretty good.

My vote would actually be to get a Gamecube with 4 controllers, Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers Melee. Fun for all the family.

But since that isn't available it'll have to be Munchkin for good clean backstabbing fun.

I can't believe nobody here has suggested Settlers of Catan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Settlers_of_Catan) yet. It's a fantastic game - one of those ones that's simple to learn yet offers endless variation.

Another good choice, if the kids are old enough to handle the concept, is Arkham Horror (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_horror). It's rare in that it's a board game where all the players co-operate with each other rather than compete. It's all the players versus the game, and is excellent for teaching teamwork. It also has the advantage that it can be played solo (you can play one or more characters, since it's all teamwork anyway) or with only two people (again, using one character each or two each). So it's one of those games where you don't have to have a bunch of people willing to play before it becomes playable.

Risk is my favorite board game, but very few people like it. It takes a certain mindset (probably one that is common on NS) to enjoy it. It can also drag on for hours, which frustrates some people though I don't mind.

Most haven't heard of it, Apples to Apples is insanely popular amoungst those who have. All ages can play it. And you can play it for as long or as short of time as you want. No one that I have gotten to play it hasn't liked it.

So though it pains me to say it since risk is the ultimate board game, I would go with apples to apples.

Get both if you can.

Definitely RISK.

"... and two extra armies on Egypt. And now, mother dear, prepare to have Southern Europe bombed back to the stone age. Southern Europe! From Egypt! With three dice, mother. You see, you never should have backed out of our non-aggression pact like that. Now you'll lose your continent."

Don't worry, though. It's like a familial aggression-valve. Feels great to defeat your kids, parents or siblings sometimes. But it's all so contextual as to not impact negatively.

If you wanna wuss out but still have fun I'd suggest Settlers of Catan. It's won a lot of awards, isn't hard to figure out, and doesn't really have any of the aggression of RISK.

But if you want something just a wee bit more fun than RISK, try tracking down a copy of Ultimatum on eBay. Think of it being like RISK but with orbital lasers, submarines and nukes. It was never really popular, it's a little dated now (the world map being divided up more along economic lines rather than geopolitical, though the Soviet world was represented - the game having had its' heyday in the mid-to-late 80s. You can still find unopened copies up for auction fairly often, so keep your eyes peeled.

*splutters in disbelief*

You're kidding, right? I mean, Settlers has only been around for a decade and a half or so, and has been taking the games world by storm. But go back to page 2 and look at my link to Wikipedia about Settlers of Catan if you want to find out more.

I still seriously recommend Arkham Horror, though. Settlers is good if you want a wargame - it's not nearly so long and drawn-out as Risk and is just as much fun, if not more so. But if you want something co-operative for all the family to play, then Arkham Horror is the one you'll want. It's just been re-released about six months ago and the new version is very well-balanced.

Thank you for your votes and great suggestions. While I will definately be looking into some of these games I never heard of, Risk won by a landslide so I'll be getting that next! By the way, for the four of you who voted for selling the kid... I have your names!!! :p
