Mainly because Libertarians have this deep seated thing about Registering people... for any reason. Lists of names based on ideology or possession of a thing is a BAD idea.

Besides, the LP rarely has primary run-offs, so it's better to be able to help control one of the other parties through theirs... so you have to register R or D anyway...

It's a closed primary, you can only vote if someone from your party is running, anyone of any party can vote in the general election.

nobody but dems and republicans bother to run here anyway. sometimes we have independents for local stuff but not often.

in the 2000 general presidential election Nader wasn't even on our ballots, because he didn't bother to jump through the hoops to get his name on it.

Well, try this:

The D candidate has no opposition, but there are 2 R candidates. The D's determine they can beat R1 easier tha R2, so in an open primary they flood the ballot box with votes for R1.

By definition, those votes are disingenuous because the Ds intend for R1 to lose...
It would be like allowing non-share-holding members of PETA vote for the president of Hormel Meats.

Therefore, the closed primary insures that the individual parties have genuine control of who gets on the final ballot from their party - making it a more fair race in the General election - where anyone can vote for anybody.

A "primary" is for the candidate of a party? Yep. In 2008 there will be both a Republican and Democrat Primary. The R's will field (for wild example) Rudy Guliani and Harriet Myers and the D's will field (wild but plausible) Hillary and Dean. Imagine the havoc if the Right wing jumped to vote for Dean (to oust Hillary)and Move On jumped for Myers (to bump Guliani). Bad News. I thought it was something like a state or local election. They are often held at the same time, leaving the Big Issue ballots less cluttered.

I can't stand the green party. Then again I wouldn't expect it to give accurate results based on so few questions. But besides that it is accurate, and I wonder if the test was somehow biased since a lot of us got Green party but I doubt all of you like them. I tend to like the natural law party (except for some of the newagey stuff you will find on their website). I would probably flip the democratic party and the republican party around on the list. But that's probably because there was no "I care more about increasing regulations on this then on that" option. Libertarianism right on the bottom is clearly inaccurate because it's above zero. Hey at least its on the bottom of the list.

Yes. It is done that way to avoid what is called "party raiding" that is, deliberately voting for the weaker candidate of the party you do not support.

Example, when I lived in Kentucky, I registered Republican. The reason I did so was to engage in party-raiding. Many Dems in Kentucky do this, because many Dems run unopposed, and so the Dems like to try and mess up the Reps by voting for the one we Dems think is the easiest to beat. All of us "party raiders" of course, never had any intention of voting in the General Election for the guy we voted for in the Primaries...we intended, all along, to vote for the Democrat.

But a lot of us registered Republican so that we could try to defeat their stronger candidates before they ever got a chance to GET to the general election.

P.S. It's called "fighting dirty" by some people.

The idea is they don't want people controlling information; you could say us libertarians want the least amount of government or heirachy as possible. It gives the individual freedom to choose and change rather than feeling that since they're registered, they must conform to a set of principles or values - just look at the sheep mentality of the Republicans and how many disagree with the neo-con religious right agenda, but at unwilling to stand up and say 'enough is enough'.

Yah. I generally agree. While the Greens are the most generally authoritarian of the bunch, the questions (esp. those on sex) would not lead a Green to an Increase answer.

Not quite; socially, the Greens in New Zealand actually side more with the Libertarian parties than one would expect; both don't want government regulating peoples lives inside the homes; the only difference is that they want to spend more of prevention in healthcare rather than doing the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff - and sometimes that gives an impression that its controlling the population, when in reality, its no more regulartory than any other party.

The again, it would be nice if the candidates actually released their cabnet before the election; atleast in the parliamentry elections in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, you know who the party leader is and the possible ministers are going to be in the new cabnet; so atleast you can vote based on the COMPLETE situation, not just one person.

Well, I'll buy that, I guess. I was briefly one of the movers and shakers in my local Green Party, before I became disgusted with the amount of infighting it took to get anything done (which, given my home state, wasn't going to accomplish anything significant anyway). And I do miss the Reform Party. I'm currently registered Democrat, because that's as close as I can get to my actual beliefs in North Carolina (a whopping 57%. Hooray.)

On the other hand, I think the Natural Law Party is a bunch of fruitcakes. And I'm a bit surprised that Libertarian came out so low, because Greens and Libertarians actually agree on a lot of issues (although they disagree strongly on others).

The test doesn't list the White Patriot Party, so I'll go ahead and add them in at 0%. :p

It used to be common in North Carolina for some die-hard Democrats to switch parties before the Republican primary so that they could vote against Jesse Helms twice. But after a couple of Senate terms, ol' Jesse no longer had any primary opposition, so that fell by the wayside.

It also used to be common in my state for many Republicans to actually register as Democrats, because few Republican candidates had primary opposition, and even fewer were going to win against their Democratic opposition anyway (the Democrats had a firm lock on the NC General Assembly, the governor's office, and most Council of State offices for most of the 20th century.)

Now that NC actually has a strong Republican party, things are different. Way different. The NC House actually had two speakers for a while recently, because it was evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans and neither party could take exclusive control.

Typical. And yet, what did I say that is untrue? Welfare programs are ostensibly to help people through a hard spot until they become self sufficient. No one is "entitled" to perpetual welfare - yet that is exactly what some programs have become.

Besides, I am neither "Christian" or a Republocrat. Selfish, Heartless, Soulless, White Hetero Male, maybe. But I draw the line at "Christian Republocrat".

Unless you get what happened in PA where you have Dems who are running one candidate only switch parties to vote in the Rep primary to get who they want on the ballot. Happened in the Senate Race. The dems switched parties to get keep Specter because it looked like he was going to lose in the primary.

Interesting...I figured out what would result in 100% Republican, and came up with the following:

If I were in charge, I would...

1. Increase regulation of radio, TV, press, and internet content.
2. Decrease regulation of licensed gun ownership.
3. Decrease regulation of the health care industry.
4. Increase regulation of minimum worker wages, and benefits.
5. Increase regulation of hiring practices, and quota legislation.
6. Increase restrictions on immigration.
7. Decrease regulations on use of natural resources.
8. Decrease regulations on use of private property.
9. Increase regulation of marijuana and other drugs.
10. Increase regulations on sex by consenting adults.
11. Increase restrictions on abortion.
12. Increase subsidies for the poor.
13. Increase subsidies for scientific research.
14. Increase subsidies for businesses and farms.
15. Decrease regulations on lobbying and campaign financing.
16. Decrease federal involvement in public education.
17. Decrease federal involvement in entitlement programs.
18. Increase federal law enforcement agencies.
19. Increase subsidies for foreign democracies.
20. Increase military defense of other nations.
21. Decrease US commitment to the United Nations.
22. Decrease taxes on personal income.
23. Increase taxes on corporate income.
24. Decrease taxes on gifts and inherited wealth.
25. Decrease taxes on imported goods (tariffs).

I'm interested in what the choices are for other parties, but I don't want to do the work. If you're interested enough to do any more...please do!

Heh, I've been on welfare for the past 8+ years...

shit. I wish I even knew how to get welfare people to even CARE about me or my needs. I tried, several times, and always got turned down.

I always suspected it was because I was

A - White
B - Single
C - Childless
D - Transsexual

They looked at that package and basically told me to go fuck myself, that I was useless in every way possible, and that I oughta just go curl up and die, and who would give a fuck?

That was the attitude I got from welfare.

If they're not too personal, what are your reasons for going on it?

My ASS!! You wouldn't know REAL discrimination if it bit you in the ass!! So a black guy got a promotion over you due to Affirmative Action?? WHOOP-WHOOP!!Um... No. Nice of you to make the unnecessary racist allusion though. How about never even getting an interview for an entry-level career position because of my age?
Try going as long-term unemployed as I have, then talk to me about REAL discrimination, okay, pal?Ah. You mean looking for work for over 3 years after geting a Degree and getting only ONE interview for my efforts? Of not being eligible for unemployment because the temp jobs I worked don't get you into the "system"? Of finally having to sell off most of your semi-valuable stuff so you can make a cross-country move in a beat-up '68 Beetle in order to take an overhead job working for your parents?

Nah. Don't know anything about that.

They looked at that package and basically told me to go fuck myself, that I was useless in every way possible, and that I oughta just go curl up and die, and who would give a fuck? They look at (the first three in particular) and say - "Stop feeling sorry for yourself and go get a job." Not that they really care if it is a GOOD job, just that it is A job. The rest sounds more like what YOU want to believe - or at least how you present yourself to the world.
