Who here has heard of synaesthesia?

Synaesthesia is a highly rare condition in which the senses are connected neurologically, so that one triggers another. (For example, seeing colours when you hear music, like me!) I personally have multiple types of synaesthesia: chromofacetia, facetographemia, optographemia, kinesigraphemia, optologia, optofacetia, facetologia, optologia, morphofacetia, optosmia, optophonia, optalgia, morphochronia, kinesichronia, chromachronia, facetochronia, and optogeusia. That means that I see colours/shapes/moving visuals when I hear, taste, feel pain, or smell, and that I see people's personalities as coloured patterns and shapes. I see graphemes (letters, numbers, characters) as having personality, strength, age, shape, and gender (this turns up particularly when I do arithmetic—I hate multiplying 7 by 6, he's so mean to poor 6!). Units of time for me have color, shape, movement, size, and personality. I also have one single shape which has smell for me, but it's unpleasant so I try to avoid it. As my sister said, in response to this: "In other words...you don't NEED hallucinogens! Lucky."

Does anyone here experience things like this, or know someone who does?

yes i've heard of it - i find it facinating so i've done a fair bit of my own research on it, though i don't have it myself.

as far as i understand there are a handful of NSers here who have it themselves (aerou is one i seem to remember)

Nope, and I'm glad i don't. That'd get irritating. I save my synaesthesiac moments for acid trips.

What I want to know is what happens when you have an orgasm?

I see people's personalities as coloured patterns and shapes.

Interesting - I occasionally have this particular experience too. I never knew that it was a medically recognized syndrome, though. I always assumed that if I mentioned it to a doctor, they would send me to a psychiatrist as quickly as they could. :D

It comes and goes for me - I used to experience this regularly, but for the past couple of years it's been extremely rare. I don't know why. Hm, time to do some research.

I think a more interesting question is; "Can any other stimuli cause orgasms?"

Because if every time i say the word, 'broccoli', someone cums in his pants, I want to know.

I see graphemes as colours/textures:

Smells and sounds elicit colours and sometimes taste. Changes in temperature cause colours, times of the day cause shapes/colours.

Lots of other things, perhaps I'll go into more detail later, I gotsta go!

I was told Wagner had it. He went to concerts to "see" the music. That might be bull however...

Synaesthesia is a highly rare condition
Actually, various psychological experiments suggest most people have at least a limited degree of synaesthesia - for example, when asked to assign colours to musical notes, most people pick brighter colours for higher notes. Another piece of evidence is the existence of sense-based metaphors such as 'bitter cold'.

I have some form of synaste.... synatehs.... damn it. Well anyway, it's fairly typical, for example different keys to me are different colors, and many pieces of music, books, stories etc. are always called up by a particular color in my mind. It never seemed unusual to me until I learned that D flat major isn't midnight blue for most people, in fact they could barely understand what I was talking about when I said so. (Probably could never tell the keys apart without it...) :p

Tone-deafness does not exist. You simply have to listen more carefully. (Or get synaesthesia. I don't know if it's contagious. Maybe it can be transmitted through the internet.)

it can be transmitted through the magic of acid or shrooms just fine :P

and bollocks there's no such thing as tone-deafness. thats just what people who *can* understand music say to those of us who can't... its like saying to a man with one arm he actually has two, just he needs to look for the other a bit harder

sorry, i'm quite bitter about the issue what with a number of my friends being fucking musical wunderkinds, and me having the musical ability of a deaf spatula

i mean how am i supposed to know whether a note is C flat or B sharp or whatever??

I know several people who used to have tone-deafness who are no longer so afflicted. One can be taught to listen. The same way people can learn perfect pitch.

From the way Aerou describes it, it's gotta be really annoying.

It can be rather annoying. Reading from a math text book and not seeing any 0's can be rather hard to deal with or talking to someone who you deal with everyday who is white/bright yellow gives me a headache. Or not wanting to hear the word Thursday because of the taste its associated with....

There are time when I enjoy synesthesia (music, sex, reading a book) and times when I just despise it.
