Good Music, or whatever you're listening to.

Right now, I have on the Mountain Goats. Amazing alt/folk band that a friend introduced to me.

Okay, now that what is currently playing is out of the way, I get to the topic of good music.

This stuff is seriously not hard to find, just walk to your local music shop and begin skimming through titles, preferably ones you've never heard of. Another option is go here: www.pitchforkmedia.com. They run daily reviews of the best new indie/alt music out there. Rap, rock, folk, country, whatever - they probably have a review of it.

Through pitchfork I have found tons of amazing music that very few other people have.

Oh - these are not viable options for good listening:

1. emo. I mean what the fuck? Are you trying to make yourself want to die? Emo is horrible. Its a guy sobbing about how his girlfriend is gone and now he's going to kill himself and send his body to her so she knows what she did to him. On top of that, do emo kids really need to dress "scene"? Black hair, brushed across one eye, lots of tattoos and piercings, tight pants, black shirts. That is not original. It is not an attention grabber. It does not make you look cool.

2. Mainstream Rap. Not all rap is bad, I am personally a fan of Aesop, The Atmosphere, Sage Francis, and a few others, but the radio rap - c'mon. I don't care how many times fidy got shot, his music still sucks. Every song sounds the same and is pretty much the same 5 guys jumping around surrounded by nearly-naked women shaking their asses. And they are all drinking, always. Is there any distinction? Is there any difference in the music? Can these people come up with any sort of new beat? What the fuck? And blasting your music at top level bass does mean its good. It just means that you're an idiot and no one else likes you.

3. Bluegrass. Faaarrrrr tooo twangy.

4. Mainstream country. I can only listen to a song about how the coys died and the cowboy left for the city so many times in a row. Come up with some new topics. And stop wearing the cowboy hats, it makes you look like a hic.

5. Mainstream Punk - STOP CRYING ABOUT THINGS!!! Stop having the exact same guy sing every song for every band. And stop with the pretentious song names. The lyrics are stupid, they don't warrant a name of more then 8 letters. And the mohawks and other "punk" accessories - lose them. You will never ever be respected by people if you look like you just crawled out of a sewer.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, here are some bands to check out:

. . .And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead, Arcade Fire, Bedhead, Beluah, Boy Robot, Can, The Fucking Am, Morphine, The Seat Belts, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, The Mountain Goats, The Pillows, The Pixies, Caliphone, Calexico, Wilco, The Wrens, The Toadies, Chin Up Chin Up, The Go! Team, The Avalanches, Circulatory System, The Exploding Hearts, Dismemberment Plan, The Bled, The Blood Brothers, The Locusts, Death From Above, The Postal Service, The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers, John Vanderslice.

What are we listening to right now?

John Coltrane - Love Supreme

I have to admit, I'm a bit of a 'out there' freak who loves listening to Avante Guarde and Free Jazz :D

Free Jazz is some cool stuff. If you like the Jazz look into Morphine and the Seat Belts, both of those are really good jazz bands.

The Seat Belts did the music for Cowboy Bebop and Morphine is a more modernish type Jazz band.

I'm chillin' to the sounds of the Dance Hall Crashers.

Right now I'm playing Enough, which is like liquid nostalgia. If songs were liquid, that is. Which it is in my mind.

Cool, thanks for that; I have to admit, I quite like listening to Sun Ra; and with a few drinks later, the music sounds even better :)

I walked into a music store the other day, and they were playing some really cool blues-rock...it sounded oldish, so I sheepishly asked who it was at the counter (thinking it was probably someone I should know) and it turned out to be a relatively new two-piece band called "The Black Keys". Definitely worth checking out; i bought the album ("Thickfreakness") even after only 5 minutes of hearing it and it is worth every cent.

"To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die" :)

Yeah. Anyone who hasn't heard them yet should definitely check them out regardless of music taste. I generally like harder stuff, but occasionally the odd mellow band appeals to me. Needless to say, the Smiths are one of these.

You don't know shit about emo. Lame fashioncore bands aren't emo no matter what they call themselves.

I'm listening to Orchid.

And The Locust is singular. And if you like them you might like labelmates(31G) The Red Scare and Camera Obscura, who are emo. Justin(vox/bass in the Locust) was also in The Swing Kids, an important emo band. ;)

Currently listening to Mad World (Donnie Darko). I feel like a tard because I can't think of the artist right now and I'm too damned lazy to bother figuring it out. I'll listen to anything that strikes me though.

Morrisey is a brilliant Lyricist. Though some of his solo work is a bit odd, as it lacks the collaborative work of Marr.

That is a brilliant song. The Donnie Darko version was done by "Gary Jules", according to a quick search on google. I don't know if that version is a cover, though. I've heard a few different versions of it.

Hey now, if they're gay and wear tight pants, I'm all for emo's :p

Then again, some of it is very lame, whining about things, I mean, if you're going to whine, thats what the blues is about - if they wish to express themselves, do what I and many others do, hug that wine bottle like there is no tomorrow :)

Looking at my iTunes genre list, it is entirely Rock, Metal and Alternative & punk (the last one being one genre, apparently). The only one that isn't is my 'Songs in they key of Springfield' which falls under 'soundtrack'.

Hmm...lesse whats in the big messy stack of CDs next to my computer.

Korpilkaani-Voice of the Wilderness. Interesting metal/finnish folk act. Think distorted Les Pauls, a violin, and accordian, a metal drummer, and a some yoik-style vocals.

Johnny Cash- Murder. Just a good old compilation of Cash's work about "robbers, liars, and murderers."

Opeth-Damnation. The least metal and most laid back of Opeth's albums. Kinda sounds like what Goth would have sounded like if anyo9ne in the genre bothered to grow up and get past their own image.

H.I.M.- Dark Light. Sooooo Disappointing. What the Emo?

Finntroll- Jakens Tid. Ummm....BLACK-METAL-POLKA!!!!! Really...what more can you say from there?

The Beatles- Rubber Soul. Yes. Just Yes.

Sentanced- The Funeral Album. If you like metal or hard rock, and you haven't given sentanced a listen, shame on you! If thats not your thing, well, then its not.

www.bearsuit.co.uk/mp3.htm

also, radiohead are the greatest band in the world ever.

also also help she cant swim. like bearsuit you will never have heard of them, but heres a link with live mp3s.

cool, i'll be looking into that, thanks :)

i've been listening to a couple of jazz albums i bought last week: one is a bunch of 'psychaedellic jazz' covers of famous rock songs (like tales of brave uleses by cream and crosstown traffic by hendrix), and the other is called Transcendances - a collection of 12" 'nu-jazz' (all these new genres are starting to confuse me... its jazz with modern beats/drum n bass) tunes on cd

oooh and week before that i got another modern jazz album by the five corners quintet

other than that, just straight drum n bass dj sets for me lately, thanks to a multitude of different websites :)

and then there's the occasional metal song too - still on a sepultura and pitchshifter binge at the mo (not forgetting Cathedral) :)

Three words. Well, technically it's one word and one compound word, but it doesn't sound as good that way. Anyway, here they are:

Yahoo Launch Cast. (http://uk.launch.yahoo.com/)

Awesome for when you just want to listen to some random tracks that suit your music tastes. The one reason I haven't given up on it completely in favour of Google yet.

The only problem is it doesn't run in Firefox. Have to run it in IE. But I've got a little script to open it in IE separately, so that's fine.

To my knowledge, the first version of Mad World was by Tears for Fears, ergo making it not only a cover, but a more morose, intensely mellow, chill type of cover....which is the only way to make the music of Tears for Fears at all worthwhile.
