I think all races and cultures have the right to coexist, and none is superior to another.
I don't think that different races are good at different things, but I'm not sure how well that belief stands up to things like Sports.

So do I think we should ignore race and treat everyone equally? Probably not, because if you don't address cultural differences, you get things like what happened in France recently.

Out of curiosity does the "insert your nationality/race here" Pride bumper stickers and t-shirts piss anyone off? I know its completely un-pc to wear or have a bumper sticker that says "White" Pride. But I always shake my head when I see it for another race. Racist is racist isnt it? Where is the line drawn?

Cultural racism is very common in the world. Most every culture practices it in one form or another.

Well, I might be yelled racist but I think races have differences.

Native american skin is harder against certain elements than Irish: I'm Native American and my dad is irish so I can tell. He burns easier in the sun.

Most these are adaptations or disadvantyages based on where your dna from bloodline grew up.

Racism, in the popular sense, means discrimination of other peoples based on race. But to answer your question, no, I'm not a racist in any sense of the word. Race is simply an old worn out social convention with zero biological legitimacy. It continues to have currancy because of the scientific ignorance of the general populace. In every thread on the topic I've seen, those who believe that biologically distinct races exists, have failed miserably to present any scientifically valid evidence for their position.

Anyone who belives in the existance of distinct human races, in any manner, is a racist in my book. As far as I understand the science, they are either clinging to an idea that is as dead as Ptolemy's Earth-centred cosmology, are confusing the biological idea of race with the anthropological idea of ethnicity, or both.

There are only two races.

Serapindal, and everyone else.

The Former is superior.

Other then that, race does not exist, and everyone is equal.

In general I thinik there is a fair spread of abilities in every race. But if you average the members of every race together you might find that some are better on average then another race at certain things. But I'm not sure if these differences are significant enough to really say that one race is superior in any one area. You could probably say that on average Africans are much suppierior at surving malarial infections. Race does exist in the sense that we have had geological issolation that has caused drift in the genetic makeup causing certain groups of people to have a tendency towards certain traits, both in outward appearance, but also at the cellular level (which causes some races to be more succeptible to certain disorders). Now with racial mixing there is a bluring of racial distinctions.

On the other hand, much of liberal humanity seems to be satisfied with completely ignoring any of our differences.

We shouldn't deny cultural or genetic talents because we want to push our own brand of nonculturism... i.e.; shades of gray.

Unfortunately, the issue of racism cannot be so easily dissected.

For example, biologically and genetically there are no, or virtually no, racial groups. (And the groups that can be made do not align with common phenotypes for current "races.")

On the other hand, race very clearly exists as a socio-political phenomenon.

Human beings have a certain natural tendency to create divisions and phenotypes have served as a means of doing so. So we have thousands of years of racist practices on top of certain natural tendencies.

I know I am racist. I strive everyday to be less racist. But I live in a racist country and a racist culture. Everyday I am bombarded by mixed signals about race, culture, ethicity, etc.

Strive for equality. Celebrate differences in culture and ethnicity. Seek to end racism where you find it - including in your own heart.

40-50 years ago it was Jews that dominated basketball. It was considered a Jewish game. Commentators would focus on the craftiness of the play, the trickery, ect.

I do not believe in 'race' in the sense of human beings being split into biological groups. I recognise the existence of the social construction, but dont believe this construction is the result of 'pre-social' biology.

The problem with France is the idea that a country should have 'little China' and 'little Algeria' and 'little Japan' - that isn't integration, thats separatism, and no wonder from that there spawns inequality and intolerance.

If I go to a country, I immerse myself in their culture whilst also holding onto my own; if I went to France, I'd try to learn French language, customs and live with other French people, just as I would do the same if I were to move to Australia or Germany.

Good point about cultures. There is one Human race, but most people have a natural preference for their own cultural grouping. Where this preferences moves into prejudice (prejudging others as inferior) and marginalisation (like whats happening in Europe with the French-born Arabs and Africans - thats the problem.

Not that I can talk! But its just simple manners to be open to learning about other cultures in your country - but sometimes can be hard.

In South Africa, for eg, there are 11 official languages! - Fortunately these are region based, so I have to only use 1 of 3 to communicate to just about everyone in the Western Cape. There is such a variety of music, food, art, etc that it makes life much richer. :fluffle:
