Well, I'm done with this forum

I have been thinking about this for a while, but never really was sure if I was going to do it.

Then I saw more french-bashing, in the fucking two cow thread. That was the most colossal disappointment in mankind I have had in the longest time. So I've had it. I don't want to deal with such idiocy anymore. I may pop up in some random thread in the future, but for all intents and purposes, I'm done.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, brother. Wish ya the best.

I'd like to add that if every time I allowed some asshole to offend me for every little comment about my country or little party, I woud've dived a long time ago.

The only reason French bashing is so prevalent is because the Bush butt-kissing, science ignorant, wanking to Limbaugh, poorly-travelled, quasi-illiterate, bible thumping, overly vocal extreme minority is feeling nervous.

My point exactly.

And my "trollish" post was a bitter commentary on NSforumdom. I was attempting to use humor to convey my inner troubled soul to the OP, letting him know that I abhore the animal for which I have become having been in this urban jungle of black Arial font too long; and that I wish I could change, but a degree of institutionalism has set in, and yadda yadda yadda...

Of course, you could have just looked at the sarcatic emoticon and figured I was sarcastically picking on the OP in the manner in which he claimed was bothering him enough to leave the forum. Because he was acting in accordance with the stereotype was just a bonus.

I just want to say (as I always enjoy mentioning things that happened previously in the conversation after everyone has moved on) that the only reason Alanis Morisette's song Ironic is ironic is because none of the things she says in the song are ironic -- just unfortunate.

Some might call it awesome (as I would), some might call it sad, but we studied the song in a literature class I took where we spent half a year on satire and irony.

Now, proceed where you left off.

She would rather me be a mormon, jew, or muslim than an atheist, god knows why. Most of this, I can't avoid in real life.

I've been here for the better part of three years. Two or so years in the RP forums, but I've served my time in general. I've been able to take more types of ad-hominems and flames than I thought were possible. This isn't a case of being so offended I want to leave.

I come here as a break from my real life, not as a fucking substitute. If I want people to talk about my choices, my beliefs, my nationality, or my heritage, I'll talk to my friends and family. If I want them insulted, I'll talk to people at my school, or my family. I've heard all the fucking jokes about my blood, a good number online, and many off.

I don't want to come here, just to hear more shit. I lasted through it before, because I was an incredibly unhappy person. Only lately have things started to pick up in my life. Either Pedophile or Paedophile, depending on the phase of the moon or something. I really have no idea what difference that "a" makes (Someone else will probably point out that the "a" is right, and that the USian spelling is worng), so I generally only use it when abusing "Paedo-" as a prefix. For instance "PaedoMan" really means "child-human" as opposed to "child molestation man", but what the Hell did the Ancient greeks know about their own language anyway?

There has been a lot of French bashing lately in response to a riot that has been allowed to expand and run out of control. Just like there is nation-bashing whenever any noteworthy news story appears about any nation...or anytime a US citizen farts or hiccups. The 2-cow thread takes swipes at dozens of nations and ideologies. Actually, the French ones were pretty mild compared to the majority. Do you really think that France and your views are so perfect and above reproach that they don't warrant a little good natured teasing? Lighten up and don't take everything so personally. And for God's sake don't develop as thin a skin concerning the US or your only logical response would be to become a hermit.

Maybe it's the way it is argued. There are a lot of threads that you could call Anti-US, but most of it is as you said "critique". Critique is okay, and if it is well-reasoned, it should be encouraged.
I don't think he ever responded negatively to posts questioning how France handled the riots.
"Surrender is always an option" is however not well-argued, it is not even a critique.
It's mindless France-Bashing, and you'll find a lot more of that on these forums than mindless US-Bashing.

Oh, come on. Oh, come on. Intelligent US critiques like pictures of Bush and Rice compared to animals...
Is that what qualifies as devious criticism of the US these days? If you want, I'm sure we could find plenty of comparisons of politicians from all over the world with animals. I don't think that would offend anyone.

...the portrayal of the majority of its citizens as mindless, ignorant, superstisious, radicals without enough intelligence to properly elect their own officials...
To be fair, the majority of those ideas came from Americans themselves. Most European posters just can't understand how someone with the past, the record and the apparent difficulties in keeping one single speech together, combined with a group of radicals and business officials as his staff could ever be elected for office. None of these things are false, or even blown out of proportion - it is probably simply differences in perspective.
And besides, I believe I remember a certain election in 2000 in which things didn't go as you would expect them in an advanced democracy.

...even our bathing habits have been criticized as obsessive.
If you're referring to the "Is America Prude?" thread, then that is a reasonable call, relative to Europe, and even Australia, the only places I can judge. And I merely asked, I made no assertions.
Again, I'd rather be exposed to that kind of honest critique than be called a coward.

It's nothing personal man, but those dudes are going to eat you alive. Once they pick up on your sensitivity and overall view of the world according to Chellis, you are going to become their favorite target. It is not pretty and thinking back I feel very badly for a few of those guys. Your DI's will all be Rangers and they will have no sympathy for what you are going through, so if you think the garbage you are getting at home in California is tough, you have no clue what tough is...yet. Do yourself a favor and choose another MOS if you can. If you can't change your mind and are stuck with what you have chosen, for god sake man keep your opinions to yourself. Chellis, you've offended more people on this forum than could ever possibly offend you. And to base your decision on the verbal harassment of the French?!? Well, there's no accounting for courage or spine, but hey, if you really feel you've experiences the proverbial last straw, then you should go. I'd rather it be for a legitimate reason, but there it is. The US basing in here has never gotten under my skin -- I agree when it's warranted and fight back when it's possible.

Is it ironic that a song called "Ironic" has no irony in it, or is it merely sophomoric, obvious and stupid?

I've never understood why a thick skin is necessary when discussing politics. Why do you all insist on insulting each other when discussing what's best for the human race? Just because politicians are uncivilised, doesn't mean everyone else has to be.

A very good question. The Greeks had/have the answer, which is this: it is a very poor user of rhetoric who attacks the potter (or poster, in this case) and not his vessel (a poster's argument). If the vessel will not hold water, it's up to those who would oppose the potter to highlight the cracks in the vessel and point out the leaks as the potter's logic drains away. To attack the maker of the idea and not the idea itself is gratuitously rude and vicious.

That said, defending oneself against an unprovoked attack is an entirely different matter. At least, that's how I learned it in PHIL420 back in grad school.

~snip~

So, by your definition, it is acceptable to make fun of the citizenry who voted for Bush because you don't agree with them, but it is not OK to make fun of France, because you do agree with its policies? I know most European posters don't understand...because they can't seem to understand the American culture and election process in general. The validity of the SC decision on the 2000 election is good for debate, but not in this thread.

If you're referring to the "Is America Prude?" thread, then that is a reasonable call, relative to Europe, and even Australia, the only places I can judge. And I merely asked, I made no assertions.
Again, I'd rather be exposed to that kind of honest critique than be called a coward.

Haven't read any of the "Is America Prude" thread. I was referring to the occasional jibes that pop up concerned with the American standards for cleanliness.

EDIT: The American posters on here are by majority liberal. The atmosphere of NS is decidedly liberal and supportive of their political and ideological views. This makes NS much less hospitable and appealing to moderate and conservative Americans. This gives an inaccurate view of the majority American opinions.

Speaking of which, just in case you really are leaving. I have to take this final oppourtunity to tell you that you are probably making a huge mistake. It's nothing personal man, but those dudes are going to eat you alive. Once they pick up on your sensitivity and overall view of the world according to Chellis, you are going to become their favorite target. I have been exactly where you will be doing your BASIC and AIT and quite frankly those that are No Goes and Reserve are thrown in with large numbers of guys going Ranger/Airborne, and you will become fodder for them. The last thing you want is to be the guest of honor at a blanket party.

Its funny, you act like I can't take insults or something. I do, easily, every day. There is a difference between being able to handle them, and choosing to go somewhere to constantly hear them, somewhere I was going to have fun.

Why should I keep coming here, somewhere I come to enjoy myself, to hear bullshit constantly? It was still better than my normal life before, but now that I'm starting to actually be happy, I can say "screw it".

And out of all the military people I've met, they are some of the coolest people I have met in a long time. Even the ones who already went through Basic, though they weren't particularly nice, they weren't asses or anything.

It was the principle of the thing. I could understand, if not like, french-bashing in a thread about the french, or heavily relating to them. I come into those threads knowing I'm going to hear more idiotic "jokes", and choose to or not to read them. But in a thread with a large number of good jokes, very inoffensive and lighthearted, people get into more french bashing.

It just pisses me off that no matter where I go, I hear this bullcrap. I can't remember the last time in general I saw a thread with the word French, without the word surrendur somewhere in there, or an equally idiotic statement. I love how people are calling me fucking sensitive, just because I don't like to be constantly put down in a place I come to have fun. Sorry if I wanted to fucking enjoy myself here.

Don't you think that this is based on current American ethnic humor? We went through a few years of Polish jokes, then there were the starving ~insert name of third world country~ jokes, and the Taliban jokes were everywhere right after 9/11. Right now Americans are more and more aware of France's involvement with Saddam, criticisms are flying back and forth, and France is just the latest target for humor and criticism.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but there's a lot more jokes, flames, accusations, and negative posts about the US than France. Maybe we're used to it, since Americans either are, or are descended from, people who were thrown out of the countries that now bash the US.

French rail at foreign 'beat-up'
Emma-Kate Symons, Paris
November 14, 2005

THE French have had enough of the riots that are sullying their international reputation as the land of civility, as well as liberty, equality and fraternity.

By the end of last week, there was a collective sense of relief as the nightly toll of burnt cars, and torched schools, nurseries, gyms, warehouses and small businesses rapidly diminished.

A few hundred - as opposed to well over a thousand - incinerated cars and a significant drop in violence in the troubled suburbs of Paris signalled for most French citizens a welcome break from the fortnight of violence that had threatened the whole concept of law and order in the republic.

With the imposition of an unprecedented state of emergency authorising local authorities to slap curfews on unruly young people, hopes grew that the untamed youth of the suburbs would quietly return to their housing estates.

Many commentators on French television and the major newspapers whined about the gross exaggerations of the riots in the foreign media.

"This is not Chechnya," one angry resident of Clichy-sous-Bois, the isolated Paris immigrant suburb where the rioting began two weeks ago, angrily told The Australian at a memorial rally for the town's gym, burned down the evening before by a gleeful mob of pyromaniacs.

If you think any of these are with the same frequency as french jokes, you are delusional. Well, maybe anytime italians and war are mentioned, but other than that. I rarely see german or british jokes on these forums, maybe a rare nazi joke or british bad cooking. Whats the difference? People don't actually believe the germans are still nazi's. Or that australians are all convicts.

As for america, I don't think there are as many idiotic jokes. There are many more gripes, but outright insults and derogatory comments? I don't believe so. Now, about bush, I'll agree, but america as a whole? I very much doubt it.

It has nothing to do with the riot. I've been on these forums much longer than you, don't treat me like I'm some sort of newbie. The french bashing was only a catalyst, not the reason, which so many of you seem to think it is.

Alot of people know me on the forums, I'm letting people know I'm leaving. I did the same thing on II, about a year ago, and didn't return. Its not an attention thing. But whatever. Its pointless to argue, as most things on this forum are. Nobody who argues changes their opinion, only the silent form their thoughts.

You joke about the South? South America?

American
Redneck
Anti-abortion
Anti-socialism
Gun Owner
Patriotic
Militaristic
Bush supporter

Lifes a bitch, suck it up!

So? I'm the following

American
Sub-urban
Pro-abortion
Pro-socialism
Gun Owner
Patriotic
Military member
Kerry supporter
Atheist
French

The list goes on.

This isn't life, this is at best a facimile where I go to get away from life. If this becomes a bitch too, why stay?

Dont ignore my first sentence Chellis, you were one of the first Old timers i encountered and I have been here for awhile longer then this account.

When I siad I would hate to see you go, I meant it.

However I meant what else I said as well.
It also stands to reason you would name the primary reason for your leaving and not the periphery.

I didnt want to see you leave II--I left about when you did.
I dont want to see leave here--
Pleasee dont pretend you cant use a private message.
Or that you couldnt have posted your leaving without making the special point to focus on french bashing--and you did make that a point to do--even though you say that isnt even the main reason. It is after all the reason you felt worth mentioning. Was it not?

I boycotted for 1 week in support of another NSer, I took an unannounced and unexplained hiatus for family issues, and I dropped out for a few weeks while recovering from a wreck, but I HAVE NEVER LEFT. Also, if you will read my posts thoroughly you will see that I have been giving him examples of other ethnic/national bashing and told him what I do when it starts to get under my skin. I will do no such thing. You are attacking his motives for leaving, as if he needs your approval to do so. You are putting on your very familiar motherly act, where you pretend to be doing things for the best interests of a fellow poster, all while subtly mocking and bashing them under the guise of concern. Your "woe is America" act is tiresome. Just because there is also derision of America on this forum does not detract from whatever Chellis has percieved as unnecessary attacks on France. You sit here and try to convince him that his reasons for leaving are invalid because Americans have to deal with so much worse. I tire of you and all those like who with your martyr syndrome.

You made a false claim about me for no beneficial reason except to give you an excuse to vent on me. And, FYI, it is not a motherly "act". It is my nature on here as in RL. Please back up your claim with links to demonstrate that I subtley mock and bash others under a guise of concern. Because Chellis simply announced his departure, and his reasons. But the attitude of Zooke and people like her who come into this thread and essentially say, "Oh, you shouldn't leave, because us Americans have it SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much worse!" is absolutely assinine.

You know why you can't find them? Because I boycotted NS in support of Eut while he was banned. I didn't agree with the mods decision, but rather than argue with them, I boycotted for the term of his banishment. Hardly a self-indulgent pity-me leaving thread. I haven't participated in the French bashing as I avoid involving myself in attacks on any segment of society, so I really don't know what kind of ignorant statements and jokes people have made. My purpose was to show that NS is an open, almost anything goes forum and someone gets their nose bumped every second. But, if you enjoy NS, and since you're one of the original nations I figure it is important to you, I thought you might use some sanity preservation measures so that NS wasn't ruined for you.
