Why the US Trade Deficit is Scary

The record numbers are unfathomable, but I am not worried the least bit about them. In a perfect world, the dollar would eventually devalue so that the deficit would narrow, and capital markets would ease the pain.
Yet this is not a perfect world. The trade deficit would provoke outrage from many special interest groups and protectionists in Congress. And that little but powerful group in Washington is inching closer to damning the world, and America, to hell.
It's frightening enough that such a trade-based state as New York (which I am a part of) would support an anti-trade wacko like Chuck Schumer for Senator. He has a bill floating around that would slap duties of 27.5% on China unless it appreciates its currency by that ammount. This assumes two things. One, China is a leech, even though it is the greatest growth engine of modern times. And two, the PRC should retain control of its currency, and not float it.
Scarier still is that it is gaining support in both Houses. Bipartisan support. They are united in hatred of the world, and in doing so, want to shun the very reasons America exists. Without foreign immigrants (like Schumer's Jewish ancestors) or trade, America would never exist. Let's stop the madness now. If you are an American, write to your Congressman or woman and tell them to end the insanity now!

I'm not American, but being a Canadian I will be effected if America enters a depression or something due to the deficit. So my advice...

Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, doing the best you can
Well it's all right, as long as you lend a hand

You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring
Waiting for someone to tell you everything
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring
Maybe a diamond ring

Well it's all right, even if they say you're wrong
Well it's all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well it's all right, as long as you got somewhere to lay
Well it's all right, everyday is judgement day

Maybe somewhere down the road aways
You'll think of me, and wonder where i am these days
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays
Purple haze

Well it's all right, even when push comes to shove
Well it's all right, if you got someone to love
Well it's all right, everything'll work out fine
Well it's all right, we're going to the end of the line

Don't have to be ashamed of the car i drive
I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive
It don't matter if you're by my side
I'm satisfied

Well it's all right, even if you're old and grey
Well it's all right, you still got something to say
Well it's all right, remember to live and let live
Well it's all right, the best you can do is forgive

Well it's all right, riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right, if you live the life you please
Well it's all right, even if the sun don't shine
Well it's all right, we're going to the end of the line

America will enter stagnation if it shuns trade partners for purely political reasons, such as Canada. And the worst part is that it will never come out of it until the protectionists change their shameful ways.

Agreed. There is an old saying that if all the money in the world was split evenly, it would be in its original hands in ten years. And that's sad that Americans don't know much about money. Most just use credit cards to pay for more credit cards to pay for crap they probably don't need. If we had a citizenry more concientious about what we buy, we'd be a more prosperous and financially secure nation, moreso even than today.

It isn't just Canada. It seems that Bush was trying to woo votes in the rustbelt by putting a punitive duty on imports of yellow goods before the last election.

We've hardly denied ourselves a good steal by raising tariffs. In fact, robbing overseas companies directly and local consumers indirectly is one of the better steals that a government can accomplish.
