Now there's a stupid idea if you ever read one!

Hmmm...over the last few days a strange thought came up in my head: Would it be a good idea to go to Germany and do my military service there?

It's ridiculous, I know, many thousands would do whatever they could not to do it, and me living in Australia means that I don't have to unless I want it.
I also know that this is one more year that I won't have a job, so I'll lose heaps of money.
I know that my parents would rip my head off.
I know that it would be a lot of hard work, boring times, and plenty of rifle-cleaning.

And yet...I can't help but think I'm somehow missing out.

I could pass for a T2 by the way, so there are no issues with me not being accepted.

Please tell me that I'm stupid, exorcise those evil thoughts from my head - surely they are only age-related, for thousands of years kids my age did the same...

Why on earth would you want to do that???

Missing out on what? On learning how to fall into a puddle the korrekt way? Missing out on being yelled at for not folding your underware with a ruler???

Don't worry about the money thing. You get quite a bit for not really that much work, I hear. Also, they pay your travel fees (in Germany at least).

And honestly, if you just want to get the question settled, there's "ways" of ranking T3 or lower, and they're currently not taking many T3s at all.

Thanks...I need some more of that kind of thing. Negative reinforcement!

I know it's such a stupid idea, but this whole "tradition" thing keeps coming through, fascination with fancy equipment maybe, the experience even.

"T2" = "verwendungsfähig mit Einschränkung für bestimmte Tätigkeiten":

Leichte Gesundheitsstörungen
=> Gesunder Jugendlicher mit u.a.
beginnenden Wirbelsäulen- und Gelenkveränderungen
Allergien mäßiger Ausprägung (z.B. Heuschnupfen)
Brille bis zu Werten von +/-8 Dpt (sph), +/-5 (cyl)
It's just my glasses, everything else is fine with me - just the fitness maybe, but they've got ways of curing that...nasty ways:eek:

Anyways, they wanted to see me when I turned 18, they send a letter to my grandparents, the last place where I was registered in Germany. After a bit of bureaucracy they believed me that I was in Oz, and so they leave me alone.
If I was to serve now, it would be only because I chose to...

Truth be told, it isn't much of a tradition, anyway. Neither my father nor any of my brothers ever went, they did their alternate "Zivildienst", and I can assure you it taught them more than military service ever will.

Your posting this for one of two reasons.

1)Your really not sure if you want to go or not. Sounds like a lack of dedication. Don't go.
2)Your attention whoring. In that case, whatever.

It's not that. Its the fact that he's like "I'm going to join the German Military, but I don't want to, talk me out of it"

If he really doesn't want to go, whats the point? This is a serious decision, so if he really isn't sure, he shouldn't do it. If he IS sure he wants to go, it's attention whoring.

I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but thats just the way it seems to me. *shrugs*

Do you get a pointy helmet? Might as well if you do, Germany doesn't do a great deal of fighting these days anyway.

I agree but i suggest not going if you are questioning urself maybe you shouldn't do it. I mean this is the army we're talking about it's no walk in the park if you have doubts don't go.

If you are attention whoring well then good job you have succeded

To my knowledge most people here don't think the army is worth bothering anyways...if it seems like I'm attention-whoring, well, I can assure you that it wasn't my intention.

The problem is that I think I would like to go - but there are too many points against it to make it smooth sailing.
It might actually be good for me personally (who knows), but as I outlined above, I'd lose a year of my education, I'd probably lose money, and my parents wouldn't understand.
So I was hoping someone could deliver me sensible extra reasons for which way I should decide: My fickle, emotional part of the brain that wants to, or the logical one, which reckons it would be a waste of time.

It's complex, and to be honest I was tired and had the migrane yesterday, so I probably wasn't thinking hard enough about what I expected as an answer anyways. So feel free to ignore the thread.

Have you ever considered that there might be a reason why most Germans themselves are trying to get out of it? Why more than half of them take on the alternate civil service, which is actually taking them a few weeks more than military service will?
