In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Tomorrow, we remember: Word War I, 908,400 British deaths; World War II 403,000; Korean War, 1,078; Kenya, Mau Mau Campaign, 26; Falklands War, 239; Northern Ireland, 671; Gulf War, 47; Former Yugoslavia, 70; Afghanistan, 4; Iraq War 97. Remember those who fell.

1,313,632 lost in all.

"And when he gets to heaven, to St Peter he will say; "Just another soldier reporting, sir - I've served my time in hell."

Especially when you know that he died soon after writing it. (Joins in Salute)
