Ask a pessimist

Well, everyone else is doing this, so I thought Id start a thread. I don't expect many replies and I suppose there isn't much point as we're all eventually going to die anyway and nobody changes their minds...

sure, this sounds depressing, i'll ask one:

Is there any way to avoid dieing from cancer, other than to die of something else first? assuming, i mean, that at the moment i'm healthy and young, and have 40+ years to work on it.

Why do you have to be such a follower? So what everyone's starting their own threads, rebel! Rebel! Rebel for no reason, for ideals, but just for rebelling! Join the revolution, fight against the crowd, we're the salmon! I'm not going to get snagged by some drunk red-neck, or eatin' by a bear, and as God as my witness, I'm not going to waste my genetic material! I'm going to spread it to every egg in this river, and the women salmon will love me! And my essence will be carried like seeds in the wind, to every lake and stream in the world, and I will live on in my children forever.

So, pessimist, what cha' think?

I don't want to spoil your fun but...
Let's put the official kibosh on the resurging "Ask a ... whatever" threads again. They've been banned at least twice, and they seem to be starting once again.

"Ask a ..." threads will be locked, moved to spam, deleted, or whatever the mod feels is appropriate. Spam warnings and forumbans may be issued for egregious offenders.

Maybe. Eventually you will have to die of something though.

Why rebel? What conceivable point is there in challenging something impermanent?

Soon, the entire first page of General will be covered in "Ask a..." threads. This has happened often enough before for there to be a general prohibition, I assume.

To sleep with women you barely know! Women love Aplha Males that just do what they want.

And any children that carry on your genetic code on to the next generation is just a bonus.

And challenging something impermanent is that it exists for a shorter time. That way, you can create something that will hopefully last longer, and everyone will remember you for it!

Heh, Laerod used "spawn."

I suppose. But I havent seen enough of these kinds of threads recently for there to be any justification of this ban, in my view. There are currently two running... including this one...

Perhaps. However, ultimately in producing the next generation, you condemn them to the same uncertain and ultimately pointless existance of the current generation.

But, there existance is merely to bring your genetic code to the generation, and their generation to the next, and so on. The whole point is for you to live forever in others, what your offspring do aside from making more children is irrelevant, and "a reason" to live was invented by humanity so we could be depressed. Its just fun stuff to do, other than "it" and passing on ourself, and ensuring the next generation lives long enough to do the same thing.

And its good to know even pessimists like something! :p

Perhaps. However there is an aspect of sadism in the concept of humanity. The fact that we seem to exist solely to reproduce is somewhat insulting and hence I may refuse to do it. Humanity should kill itself off and have as much protected sex as it likes, without producing any children, in defiance of nature and its evil. *grumbles*

Meh, now that you bring morality and evil into it, I digress. However, the opinion that "nature" is evil is a classic Christian beleif, most popular during the colonization of the Americas in which the Devil was to reside with the Natives in the forest and whatnot. So, you're possible reason to live is to encourage people to live chaste, pious lives, and eventually be elected as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. :p

I stop now.

Can there be bad surprises for a consistent pessimist?

Is there any way to avoid dieing from cancer, other than to die of something else first? You've gotta die form something, old age if nothing else. So excluding all possibilies but cancer, either you die by cancer or live forever. And since I'm quite pessimistic about the later being possible: No there is no way to avoid dying from cancer other than dying from something else first.

I think you're either a salmon who's somehow learned to use a computer, an extremely wierd salmon-fancier, or using a very warped metaphor.

Of course there can. We're not omnipotent. Bad surprises are miseries that we have not yet considered. They only really serve to prove our point in a way. If you expect things to go wrong, ultimately you will be proven correct.
