Suicide blasts in Jordan, 57 killed
NDTV Correspondent
Thursday, November 10, 2005 (Amman):
At least 57 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in explosions at international hotels in the Jordanian capital, Amman late on Wednesday night.
Suicide bombers carried out simultaneous attacks on three US-based hotels - the Grand Hyatt, Radisson SAS and Days Inn hotels just before 9 pm (1900 GMT).
Deputy Prime Minister Marwan Muasher said many of those killed were Jordanians but did not give a full breakdown of nationalities in the strikes.
He added that most of the victims at the Radisson were Jordanians attending a wedding banquet in a ground-floor reception hall, where a man strapped with explosives infiltrated the crowd.
"We thought it was fireworks for the wedding but I saw people falling to the ground," said Ahmed, a wedding guest who did not give his surname.
Foreigners killed
The total number of dead in the three attacks include at least three Asians, possibly Chinese.
It's believed Germans, a US citizen of Arab origin, Egyptians, Saudis and Iraqis were also killed in the blast.
Muasher said the attacks on the Hyatt and Radisson were suicide bombings.
At the Days Inn, an explosives-laden vehicle was prevented from driving past security and blew up outside, shattering windows the hotel.
Borders sealed
Prime Minister Muasher said Jordan's land borders had been sealed and there are "more measures which will be undertaken soon."
He said there had been no arrests yet, though security forces had fanned out across the capital and roads were closed.
The hotels, in the commercial Jebel Amman district of Amman are visited mostly by American and European businessmen and diplomats.
Jordan, a key US ally in the Middle East, has long been regarded as a prime target for attacks.
