I heard on the radio this morning tat the Marines are debating about helping Paris with their little riot problem.

At last check they had decided that sending a Squad might be a bit of overkill, so they were debating which 5 Female Marines on their way back to the US on Maternity Leave could stop over for a couple of days to do the job... :p

GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. ON NOVEMBER 10TH, 1775, THE SECOND CONTINENTAL
CONGRESS RESOLVED TO RAISE TWO BATTALIONS OF CONTINENTAL MARINES
MARKING THE BIRTH OF OUR UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. AS MAJOR
GENERAL LEJEUNE'S MESSAGE REMINDS US, THE ENSUING GENERATIONS OF
MARINES WOULD COME TO SIGNIFY ALL THAT IS HIGHEST IN WARFIGHTING
EXCELLENCE AND MILITARY VIRTUE. EACH NOVEMBER AS MARINES THE WORLD
OVER CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF OUR CORPS, WE PAY TRIBUTE TO THAT LONG
LINE OF "SOLDIERS OF THE SEA" AND THE ILLUSTRIOUS LEGACY THEY HAVE
HANDED DOWN TO US.
2. THIS PAST YEAR HAS BEEN ONE OF CONTINUOUS COMBAT OPERATIONS
OVERSEAS AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE HERE AT HOME - A YEAR OF
CHALLENGES THAT HAVE BROUGHT OUT THE VERY BEST IN OUR CORPS. IN
IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN, MARINE COURAGE AND MASTERY OF COMPLEX AND
CHAOTIC ENVIRONMENTS HAVE TRULY MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF
MILLIONS. MARINE COMPASSION AND FLEXIBILITY PROVIDED HUMANITARIAN
ASSISTANCE TO THOUSANDS IN THE WAKE OF THE SOUTH EAST ASIAN TSUNAMI,
AND HERE AT HOME, MARINES WITH AAVS, HELICOPTERS, AND SOMETIMES WITH
THEIR BARE HANDS SAVED HUNDREDS OF OUR OWN FELLOW AMERICANS IN THE
WAKE OF HURRICANES KATRINA AND RITA. ACROSS THE FULL SPECTRUM OF
OPERATIONS, YOU HAVE SHOWCASED THAT MARINES CREATE STABILITY IN AN
UNSTABLE WORLD, AND HAVE REINFORCED OUR CORPS' REPUTATION FOR
SETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE.
3. THE SENSE OF HONOR, COURAGE, AND PATRIOTISM THAT EPITOMIZED
THOSE WHO ANSWERED THAT FIRST CALL TO ARMS 230 YEARS AGO IS STILL
INDELIBLY IMPRINTED ON OUR RANKS TODAY. IN COMMEMORATING OUR
ANNIVERSARY, LET US STRENGTHEN OUR TIES TO THE PAST BY PAYING HOMAGE
TO THOSE WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US. AS WE HONOR THE SACRIFICES OF OUR
WOUNDED AND FALLEN COMRADES, OUR COMMITMENT TO ONE ANOTHER REMAINS
UNSHAKABLE. WE TAKE SPECIAL PRIDE IN THE ACTIONS OF THE MARINES NOW SERVING IN HARM'S WAY, AND REDEDICATE OURSELVES TO THE SERVICE OF OUR NATION AND OUR CORPS.
4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINES, SEMPER FIDELIS, AND KEEP ATTACKING! M.W.

This is the time of year when I end up paying the bar tab, because I'm not a Marine, but merely an Army infantryman who has Marine friends.

Maybe, maybe not. Its a brotherly rivalry. They're often togethr in the things that need to be done. My respects to the Royal Marines as well.

Coincidentally, my duties this week and next take me to the lovely USS Tripoli. A ship that is in both namesake and function a memorial to the Marine Corps.

http://www.usstripoli.com/Images/tripoli.jpg
It looks a little different now.
http://www.smdc.army.mil/SMDTC/T_E_Activities/mainimages/MLP1.jpg
and it's purpose is not quite what the Navy/Marine team had intended for it,
http://www.smdc.army.mil/SMDTC/T_E_Activities/mainimages/MLP2.jpg
But it isn't a reef, yet. Today, I was able to demonstrate my fitness for sea duty by donning an exposure suit, doing two chinups and climbing up and down a jacobs ladder. For an out-of-shape ex-aviator, that was enough for the day. Oooh-ra! Now it's margarita time.

I've never understood why there's a Marine Corps in the first place. They point guns, fire them and march around a lot, right? So why not just call 'em soldiers? And have them serve in the Army?

It's not like I see them in swim trunks and snorkels, menacing enemies with spear guns, after all...

Way back when, the Navy needed someone to protect them when they were under way. The Marines were an embarked fighting force that were trained in ways that sailors weren't.

We're still embarked a lot and always expeditionary. The Army just hasn't caught on to the whole Combined force concept. Whenever Marines deploy, they bring it all with them. Infantry, Air, Supporting Arms, Logistics all deploy in even the smallest expeditionary force. The Army depends on the Air Force.

Besides, our uniforms look better than the Army uniforms.

Can I ask a dumb question?

Who fires the big guns on the battleships? Marines or sailors?

Can I ask another dumb question?

Where do they keep those big guns on aircraft carriers, what with the top deck being an airport runway?

I don't think there are any more BBs in US naval service. But the sailors did the shooting.

Aircraft carriers made BBs obsolete. Those 'big guns' are parked on the flight deck and armed with all sorts of nasty weapons.

I did my part to celebrate the Corp's B-Day by NOT making fun of any of the Marines at the armory. (It's a service rivalry.) I honestly respect them, but they make jokes about the Navy and I make jokes about the Corp. We're all on the same team in the end.

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land and sea
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

The sailors fire the guns. We don't have any big ones left as the BBs are gone. The Marines usually have guard duty on a large ship like a carrier, or they are embarked aboard an amphibious assault ship as an MEU that is prepositioned for quick responses to wars or even natural disasters (see tsunami and the quake in Pakistan.)

The carriers don't have any big guns. They have ESSM missiles to shoot down incoming missiles along with some small 20 mm CIWS guns that are being replaced by the Rolling Air-frame Missile. Their primary weapons is the air wing they carry.

I heard the WMs had been selected from those applying for maternity leave and that they had been told to leave their soap and deodorent behind so that they could blend in. I don't know if we can get them over there in time to prevent a French surrender, now that the Concorde is grounded.
