I see what you mean Thrust, but I agree with Avalon on this. In two days it is Rememberance Day in the UK at least (I'm not sure about in the US).

I used to be a nurse many moons ago. I remember working a night shift on Bonfire night. It was in a male medical ward in a hospital in Edinburgh, and we had three demented WW2 veterans on the ward. When the fireworks started to go off they were whimpering and crying. One still bore the scars of his time when he had been captured by Japanese forces and forced into assisting with the building of the Kwai railway bridge.

I just feel pretty grateful to those guys, and gags about nuclear weapons, Tojo and the rest just don't strike me as being appropriate round about now.

Yeah, fair enough. I don't think it was funny at all really, but that's me. Maybe it's an age thing. Not being patronising, but I just don't find much about that period of time particularly amusing. Sorry to be sniffy :)

In all seriousness, that may have been a difficult time in our history, but I don't think all those soldiers were fighting with the hope that we would be totally solemn about what happened. Avoiding WWII would have been nice, but we didn't. Given that it happened I'd rather celebrate the victory than mourn the people that secured that victory. I would guess the majority of them would prefer to know that we cherish their contribution in a happy way, instead of crying about it.
