What effect has nationstates had on you?

Well, what can I say. When I first started posting here in 2003 I had pretty conservative views. I was anti-gay marriage, anti-abortion etc. and was pro-free market enterprise. Little has changed as far as my poilitcal beliefs with the exception of me becoming a social liberal. (I still rather like the idea of a capitalist society.)

What about you?

Well, it worked alongside lots of outside reading, and a few interesting courses I took at Uni to reaffirm my old belief in moral relativism (which I had lost somewhat at times), and maybe moved me a little to the right as far as economics is concerned, from socialism to more pragmatic approaches...

meh, i was about to comment on how my sleeping pattern changed since i started posting in General on a regular basis..but reading your post this is probably not what this thread is supposed ot be about.

i don't think my political viewpoints changed. but maybe my understanding of other viewpoints got wider. which is cool.

[oh damn. did that just read like an invitation to those conservatives to keep posting for the sake of my education? i hate to be misunderstood.]

NS has tought me that people overseas really aren't any more rational then people in the US, they just shift thier stupid to different things. I've also had my once beautiful speeh corrupted by extra u's and words like "wank" and "tosser."

Personally, I think US English (and I know it's not really uniform) is the least pleasant-sounding variation of the language.

But that aside...I had the word (?) "W00T" added to my vocabulary, which is terrible because it somewhat outs me as a nerd...

It's taught me some interesting things about the world in general, and has encouraged me to pay closer attention to American politics. Not like most of it's really all that relevant to us over here, but it is quite interesting.

I have been opened up to a whole lot of new viewpoints. Most people surround themselves with people of the same views, but NS (normally) forces you to spar with somebody and your views are sometimes either crushed or reformed which is excellent. I think that if more people were shown view-points different from their own more often, it would give people a far better insight onto a whole range of issues.

My pronunciation has remained untouched, but the problem is the slang bits are nothing I want in my vocabulary and the u's tend to get annoying when they appear inconsistently.

NS has taught me that The way I want to run a Nation (albeit a little different cause some issues are just odd, or dont have appropriate solutions), is a viable way to run a huge successful nation. *shurg*

Ideally I would want a Nation where, everything goes - unless it negatively impacts to a significant extend on other people - so Liberal I guess, with a Very Capitalist economy.
This is how I've tried to structure my Nation.

So I'd have to say My view havn't really changed and from reading posts ... I already know there were whack jobs out there ... but they are entitled to their opinions as well.

It has been and will continue to be an interesting experience.

1337$fh33k is starting to become somewhat more popular at my school. Happily the teachers have no idea what any of it means (with the exception of a Socials teacher as he is a Halo nerd). They also haven't figured out what skeet or flipping the V mean so they won't figure it out anytime soon.

NS has had an effect on me, too. For a while it was just something I played, or didn't play (which is why this nation died for about four months), but then I heard about the forums and became hooked for life. Restored old nations like this one, created trillions of new ones, etc. ;)

I went from mildly catholic to agnostic to athiest. My faith wasn't really all that strong before though. I went from anti to pro-war. I'm now pro(ish)-gun and far more libertarian than I was. I am also much more clued in to American politics, more knowledgeable abut random subjects and tend to think about ideas more in RL (in case I'm asked to defend them on NS general). I'm more exasberate and impressed with America then ever before. Finally, and most importantly, I am now watching the Daily show online.

nationstates changed my life....honest...I made my nation, and was recruited to a region. (like you are) and went to join it (like you do) and the region had a chatzy chatroom, so after a bit I plucked up the courage to join it, then after a bit longer I plucked up the courage to join IN, in the chatroom I started to talk to the other people (OH MY GOD!) and made 'friends' and then I started to find that one in particular was funny, intersting etc etc...so, we started to talk together, first via telegram, then via MSN. Now add to this that I was a married woman with 3 kids living in the UK and that he was a single guy living in Canada...I had been horribly miserably married for years and he made me realise that not all men are a**holes, well I asked my husband for a divorce, he threatened to kill me, I called the police, he moved out....I carried on talking to the canadian until later that year he decided to chance it all, get on a plane and come visit me.....he and I got on like we knew each other all our lives, and so he went home, sold up, packed up his job, left his friends and family behind and moved to England to be with me. I am now divorced and we are living together and my kids love him, and I love him and although I will be honest and say that it has not always been easy (look for me on Jerry Springer *manaical laugh*) we are in love and he is the man of my dreams....and its all because of NS.

Like others, it gave me a forum addiction. In terms of my views, they remain pretty similar to those I held before, though I have moved slightly to the left in terms of social issues. I always did have liberal views on things like abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage etc, but I was always dead against affirmative action, for example. I'm still opposed to it, but slightly less fervently than I used to be.

I came from a strong conservative (authoritarian) background, I now am a left leaning libertarian

Its about the opposite of my starting point in finding what I really believed in (specially discerning what I believed in as opposed to my parents beliefs that I just picked up)

Most of it thanks to nation states

I also managed to find what I believed (faith or lack there of) and work through the idea to the one that truly felt right rather then just keeping up presences of catholicism because it was easy for me. Hell I am not sure I knew what an atheist was before I went through and learned I are one :)

I found NS after listening to a radio show that I dont normally listen too, and doing something I dont normally do, that is hold information in my goldfish brain...then I get recruited to a region in which a guy who also came upon NS by chance is, we both happen to be online at the same time, even though there is a fairly hefty time difference, we both decide against our better judgement to join the chatroom and HEY PRESTO....this online thing is really catching on you know...when I told people I met this guy on the internet they looked at me like I lost my MIND...but in the time (two years) since we 'met' I have now heard of three other people through my circle of friends and aquaintances who have met people through the internet...although not NS!

I think the internet is the future of love...being serious. I think its a good way to get to know a person before you meet...the only problem is sites MEANT for dating...I think thats even more likely to be weird and scary than meeting through a site that has nothing to do with dating and relationships...you get to know each other in a much more 'normal' way when you are not looking.

Good luck to all my fellow NS romancers! :D :D
